Dear Members, Patrons, and Friends,
September always brings with it a renewed energy to bring forth more art. The lazy days of summer are behind us and the hustle and bustle of the winter holidays are yet to come. Your Board officers and chair people are already working to make sure we have a good year of entertaining speakers, and demonstrators and workshops with nationally recognized teachers are lined up.
Please make sure your dues are paid for the year and you have completed a Membership Renewal Form. The new Member Directory (which includes “paid up” members only) should be ready for pickup by the October meeting. Please share your e-mail address with us as that is our preferred way of sending written information to you. We do not share our Membership List outside the organization. Lori Luckner is our new Membership Chairperson. Please contact her at [email protected] or 937-235-2513 for membership questions or changes.
We are all volunteer led, so please be willing to step up to assist calls for volunteers. Many hands make for easier work for us all. Also, please share your thoughts and suggestions in writing to any Board member.
Our September 4 speaker will be spiritual artist Rosie Huart. Meeting begins promptly at 7 pm. Board meeting begins at 6 pm. Refreshments at the September meeting will be provided by our Board members and Chair-persons.

SEPTEMBER 2018 SPEAKER—ROSIE HUART
Our speaker for the September meeting will be mixed-media artist, Rosie Huart. The public is invited to attend and watch as Rosie demonstrates her creative art techniques.
The title of Rosie’s presentation is “Connecting Art & Spirit: Dancing with Tools and Techniques.” She will demonstrate how she connects her art and spirit by making an inspirational art journal with intuitive marks. Rosie will demonstrate how daily writing practices can be meditative art. She will be using a variety of tools, such as nibs, markers, graphite, and ruling pens, which offers her a palette of creativity for her mark-making on different surfaces. She also will solicit audience participation in exploring some Golden products for the art journal pages.
Rosie is a mixed-media artist and loves to express her creativity through calligraphy, poetry, painting, creative writing, papermaking, and bookmaking. She is an adjunct professor at Sinclair Community College and has taught workshops nationally and internationally in Italy, France, and Greece. She delights in challenging herself and is always on the lookout for her next artistic adventure. Rosie’s inspiration comes from Eastern spirituality and from that still small voice that is within. She offers Connecting Art and Spirit retreats and workshops locally and nationally.
Rosie was born and raised in Dayton and graduated from Sinclair Community College with a degree in Mental Health Technology and from the University of Dayton with degrees in Art and Psychology. She also is a Golden Artist Educator for Golden Paints.
ART SUPPLIES SALE
Come early to our September meeting for a chance to buy or sell second-hand art supplies, which will be displayed on the table by the window. The Gallery will open at 5:30 pm for you to bring your art supplies to sell or look over what is available to buy. Please, no artwork to be sold at this time. Each person will price his/her own products and conduct sales. The Fairborn Art Association does not charge a commission, so you keep any money you make on sales.
SWEET CORN FESTIVAL SUMMARY
Another Sweet Corn Festival has passed and even though we had 2 inches of rain at noon Friday as we were setting up, Saturday and Sunday were gorgeous. We had a lot of vendors stuck in the mud on Friday when they were setting up but with the help of everyone we managed to get everyone out and in their place. Saturday and Sunday we had the biggest crowds we have had in years. The Lions Club sold 2000 chickens and ran out of both corn and chicken Sunday. Our watermelon booth sold 250 watermelons. The Kettle corn booth sold 350 pounds of popcorn. Between the cooked corn and the ones sold by the dozen at least 25,000 ears of corn were sold. This is just a few statics that we know of at this moment. All the Vendors were very happy. A BIG THANKS TO EACH AND EVERYONE THAT HELPED US. …Submitted by Warren Brown and Sue Red
Watermelon Booth
Thanks to all the members who served at the Watermelon Booth this year. We had a phenomenal year. We cut up 250 watermelons, sold over 2300 cups, and raised over $3750 for our Fairborn Art Association. this topped last year’s record of $3017. We basically sold out, having only four watermelons left at the end of the festival. We could not have done this without you. I sincerely appreciate all of those who worked this year

Queen of the Festival
This year is my 26th festival and it has been a special one. I was honored to be chosen as the Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival Queen. It was a nice change of pace for me. I still did a lot of work, but it also gave me the opportunity to visit the vendors and visitors more. Serving as the Queen with the King Dan Kirkpatrick was a wonderful time. I’ve known Dan for several years and we had a lot of fun.
Normally I ride around checking for problems, checking to see who left early, or taking care of issues. This year I rode around talking to the vendors and visitors asking them how they were enjoying the festival. I was able to ask the new vendors how they were doing and how they liked the festival (which was pretty much all positive). This year I was able to get a different perception of the festival and realized that there are still some improvements needed. We had some parking issues (for which some shuttle suggestions were made) and mud issues (can’t control Mother Nature) but overall it was a fantastic year.
Thank you to the Fairborn Lion’s Club for this honor and I look forward to next year.

OCTOBER 2018 WORKSHOP WITH NITA LELAND
We have had to make a big change in our October workshop. Fealing Lin was forced to cancel all of her workshops for the remainder of the year for health reasons. We have been very lucky to find a replacement with such short notice and I think you will be pleased .
Nita Leland will present “Color Clinic” at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery on October 2, 3, and 4, 2018, from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. Nita helps watercolor artists understand all about paint and how colors work in mixtures, how to create vibrant color expression using triads to enhance your artwork, and how to use the seven contrasts of color to improve your artwork. You will learn about paint characteristics, organizing your palette and more. There will be mini-demos and class critiques throughout the day with lots of painting and individual attention. Finished artwork will also be critiqued in class upon request. Nita is the author of the recently released bestseller Exploring Color Workshop: 30th Anniversary Edition, Confident Color, The New Creative Artist (a new paperback edition coming in December), and New Creative Collage Techniques, as well as featured artist in four art-instruction DVDs published by North Light Books/artistsnetwork.com. Nita began her art career in watercolor and has been teaching classes and workshops in color, collage, and creativity throughout the U.S. and Canada for more than 40 years. LOUISE JACKSON WATERCOLOR CLASS
Please join me and learn how to paint Tulip Circles. The classes are September 11 and 18 from 11:00 am until 3:30 pm. At the end of the second class, the painting should be complete and ready to frame. Size is 32 x 12. For those of you already signed up, this is a reminder. For any of you that would like to join us, simply let me know by calling 937-886-5238. There are a few spots open. All paints will be furnished. Total fee for both 4-1/2 hour classes is $65. We won’t break for lunch but you can bring yours and munch as you go. This will be my last class for 2018, so hope you can come. A photo of the painting is below.

PLEIN AIRE WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP WITH LIBBY RUDOLF
Announcing a Watercolor Workshop in ‘plein aire’ at the Hertzler House (located in George Rogers Clark Park) on Tuesday, September 18 from 9:30 – Noon with Libby Rudolf as Teacher. The class is limited to 15 and is $15. Artists are to bring their paints and brushes and a sturdy backboard. We have Arches paper and special pens for everyone. MIAMISBURG ART GALLERY
Several Fairborn Art Association members won awards at the Miamisburg Art Gallery 2018 Juried Art Exibitiion during an Awards Ceremony on Saturday, August 11. The Exhibition is open to the public until September 8. Open hours: Monday through Friday 5:30 pm-8:00 pm, Sunday, 1:00 pm-5:00 pm. The Gallery is located at 16 N. Main Street, Miamisburg, OH 45342. 2018 PIQUA ARTS FESTIVAL
The 2018 Piqua Arts Festival will take place on Saturday, September 1, 2018. Artists from across the state and beyond will be invited to participate in a Plein Air Paint Out as part of the Piqua Arts Festival. Once they have their packet, they can proceed to leave the Arts Festival Area and start painting. Artists will be required to return to the Piqua Arts Festival by 4 pm. They will have a “Wet Paint Sale” where artwork is put on sale from 4 pm until 7 pm. During this time, they will be able to participate in a Quick Paint Competition. Artists wishing to participate will pay a $10 fee and then popular vote (by the artists) will take home the pot. The quick paint will take place from 4:30 to 7 pm and winners for the Paint Out Competition and Quick Paint will be announced afterwards. 1st Place for the Paint Out will be $500, 2nd Place will be $250, 3rd Place will be $150 and two honorable mentions of $50 will be awarded. This “Celebration of All Things Creative” will be held Sunday, September 16, 2016, from 11 am to 6 pm. Location is the Community Park, Factory Road and SR 35, Beavercreek, Ohio.
DAYTON VISUAL ARTS CENTER ANNUAL MEETING
Dayton Visual Arts Center is holding their Annual Meeting/New Member Soiree on Wednesday, September 25, 2018 from 6–9 pm. At 6:15 pm Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley will present a Toast to New Members.
