PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Greetings Fellow Artists!
Believe it or not, we are wrapping up another year of FAA and I hope everyone enjoys their summer break. I will be going to Niagara Falls, including Canada, with Jay, the girls, and their husbands. Later, Jay and I are going to spend a few days in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where my grandmother lived, and visit my sister and cousins. I really like to travel and am excited to get away for a few days here and there.
Speaking of summer, don’t forget to sign up to work at our Sweet Corn Festival on August 17 and 18. We always need lots of volunteers to make it a success. Jerry Red/Warren Brown are chairing this event and you can contact Cheryl Miracle to volunteer. Also, we need workers for the Watermelon Booth, so contact Roger Browning if you can help. This is Roger’s last year to chair the Watermelon Booth, so please consider volunteering for this position so you can work alongside Roger to learn the ropes. As I’ve said many times before, this is our main fundraiser for FAA and we need everyone to work together to make it a success!
Our June meeting will once again be a Social on Tuesday, June 4, at 6:30 pm. FAA will provide hotdogs, condiments, paper products, and drinks. Everyone is asked to bring a side dish or dessert. This is always a fun, busy meeting where we will have installation of officers, introduce the Sweet Corn Festival King and Queen, meet our three scholarship winners and their families, and have our People’s Choice awards. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone!
I’d like to recognize Carol Edsall for her years as our vice-president. She has done a marvelous job and was always diligent in her duties which included providing interesting demo artists for our meetings, making sure they had directions, unloading and loading equipment, having a bio for introductions, etc. Carol is always a pleasure to work with, and I especially love her sense of humor. Thank you, Carol, for your years of service to FAA!
Keep creating and see you in June!

2024 MEMBERS’ FINE ART SHOW JUROR’S STATEMENT
The paintings in this exhibition delighted me – made my eyes dance across the paper – made me feel something – inspired me – and filled me with wonder!
My standard for selecting the paintings in this show was vivid imagination, bold storytelling, and excellence in design.
Above all I looked for the voice of the painting – the story and emotion. I looked to see if the artist owned that voice and committed to every aspect of the painting. I paid attention to both the loud, dynamic voices as well as the quiet, softer ones.
Best of Show was awarded based on this criteria and set the tone for this exhibit – it excellence in design, and beauty in the brushstrokes – this painting’s voice grabbed my imagination. I felt like I was standing there on that sunny day and watching those children playing!
1st place was awarded to another painting that told a story – thoughtful, moody, excellence of design, and with fresh, confident brushstrokes. I also loved the skilled use of subtle color which leads me through the composition – this painting had a confident voice and the artist boldly owned that voice!
2nd place was awarded to a painting that could not be passed by without stopping – that stare! – it brought me into the story boldly and a dramatic use of color made me stay and fall in love.
3rd place was a painting that has a bold use of colors, shapes, and lines. The organic tension intertwined with strong, geometric shapes made this painting shout “look at me!” – and so I did!
The Honorable Mentions all had these qualities – some of their stories were softly spoken while others were boldly declared – all of them spoke of a strong imagining of a definite moment. They all grabbed me and pulled me further into those stories.
I applaud all the artists who dared greatly and entered this show, took a risk and told their story.
The endeavor of the artist is to pay attention to wonder, be astonished by the ordinary, and make these things heard and seen as something extraordinary. Thank you for sharing your stories and allowing me to see the world through your eyes – you filled me with joy!
Trish McKinney. Juror
