PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Hello Fellow Artists!
Fall is here and this drought has been hard on everyone and everything. My friend who raises honeybees says that the bees have been eating all their honey and now he has to feed them sugar water … maybe I should be a honeybee!
I stepped out of my comfort zone last month and did a yupo demo for the WOWS organization, which turned out to be a fun, exhilarating afternoon. I felt quite inexperienced and unqualified when asked, but decided to say “yes” because, as the years go on, I try to conquer my fears, step out in faith and try something new, and I can’t tell you how happy I am that I did! I’ve always been afraid to get in front of people and try new things, but when I do push myself, I find that it’s a positive learning experience, so I encourage each of you to get out there, face your fears and see what happens!
Our meeting will take place on the second Tuesday of the month, October 8, at 7:00 pm with David R. Smith as our guest demo artist. I’ve seen him before, and he is an excellent, entertaining, enthusiastic artist who you will all enjoy. Be sure to get to the gallery early to get a good seat! David will also be the instructor for our workshop on October 7–9.
I’d like to thank Debbie Cosenza for doing another fantastic job on our FAA directories this year. I especially like the birds on the cover (what a surprise)! I also want to thank her for managing our membership and dues records, purchasing our door prizes, and greeting us with nametags and her smiling face when we arrive each month for our meetings.
That’s a wrap for this month. Keep creating and hope to see you in October!
Linda Brandenburg, President
OCTOBER’S FEATURED ARTIST – DAVID R. SMITH
We are pleased to have David R. Smith as the guest artist for our October demo! David began his artistic journey studying Chinese Brush Painting in the United States and China. A decade later, he was introduced to Western style watercolor painting and was amazed at how enjoyable and forgiving it was compared to working on rice paper. Ever since, he has been hooked on watercolor painting, and has become a popular artist and instructor nationally and internationally, as well as a sought after juror. David is the recipient of the Skyledge Award (the highest recognition awarded by the Transparent Watercolor Society of America), an award winner and signature member of the American Watercolor Society, signature member of the National Watercolor Society, and his work has earned him numerous “Best of Show” awards for both his studio and plein air work, signature memberships, showings in galleries and museums across the United States and abroad, and inclusion in publications including Fine Art Connoisseur, International Artist, and multiple editions of SPLASH – The Best of Watercolor.
OCTOBER WORKSHOP WITH DAVID R. SMITH
Our Workshop with David R. Smith will be held on October 7–9, 2024. With over 25 years of experience as a public school teacher, David is skilled at breaking down complex concepts and skills into easily learned chunks and now enjoys helping workshop participants find success with watercolor. As much as he loves to paint, he has found sharing his watercolor passion through instruction even more gratifying and he is most rewarded when he hears a frequent comment: “This is one of the best workshops I’ve ever taken.”
The registration form is available in the Gallery and on our website Home Page under Forms. Register soon to reserve your spot!
