Dear Members, Patrons, and Friends,

I am glad that we are continuing to get the word out about FAA.  We have had some good news publications and getting some of our members pictures in new and different places, like the Fairborn City Building, etc. I will be glad when water finally quits coming down. Good news is we can all paint scenes of water as we have plenty of material to work with. Just a reminder that the Sweet Corn Festival group can always use volunteers; the festival committee works year round. Some of us are writing books on what we do and find that the festival has grown and many of us could use helpers to keep up with our work. Remember that the festival pays for all our rent here and many other projects like  scholarships for young people trying to become artists. We have a very active group and are becoming known in many new areas. Keep up the good work. See you at our next meeting on March 6 at 7:00 pm. The Board will meet at 6:00 pm.

MARCH SPEAKER—LEONARD WILLIAMS

Local artist Leonard Williams will be a speaker/demonstrator at the Fairborn Art Association (FAA) meeting, Tuesday, March 6, 2018. Best known for his vibrant watercolor scenes, Williams concentrates on the realistic depiction of nature and landscape vignettes. His paintings invite the viewer to become a part of the setting.

Williams grew up with a love of nature, a deep concern for the earth, and a passion for the American West.  He draws his inspiration from the infinite world of nature–its lands and seas, its animals, and its people. This popular artist’s paintings have been recognized in numerous juried shows, both locally and nationally, and his studio walls are peppered with a variety of ribbons, awards and honors.  Many of his works are featured in private and corporate collections across the country. His work can be seen in The New Creative Artist, by well known artist/author Nita Leland and he is a featured artist in her newest book Confident Color. In addition, his drawings appear in a series of learning and activity books for children in grades one through five produced by Children’s Historical Publishing.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Williams spent 25 years as a firefighter for the City of Dayton and over 35 years as a sign painter. Drawing since childhood and primarily a self-taught artist, he has refined his natural talents by attending workshops given by many nationally known artists such as Stephen Quiller, Don Andrews, Nicholas Simmons, John Salminen, Jack Hines, Robert Bateman, and others and by studying at the yearly Pro-Art Workshop in Big Timber, Montana for more than 11 years. Now retired, he lives in the Caesar Creek area of Waynesville, Ohio, where he concentrates full time on his painting. Williams also teaches beginning and intermediate watercolor classes and beginning drawing workshops at Rosewood Art Centre in Kettering, Ohio, and give demos and workshops throughout the surrounding area. Williams is an active member and past president of the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors, and an active member of the Ohio Watercolor Society, the Western Ohio Watercolor Society, the Greater Cincinnati Watercolor Society, the American Impressionist Society, and the Ohio Plein Air Society.  In addition, he is a member and strong supporter of several conservation organizations including the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens, Defenders of Wildlife, the World Wildlife Federation, the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, and the Humane Society of America. Among his many awards are:  2014, Middletown Arts Center 1st Place,  “Glen Helen Gorge” ;  2014, Rosewood Art Centre Works on Paper 2nd Place, Yellowstone Backwaters ; 2012 , Western Ohio Watercolor Society Best of Show. Smokey Mountains Shades of Green ; and 2009, Western Ohio Watercolor Society Best of  Show, Hocking Hills Winter.

YUKI HALL WATERCOLOR CLASS

Yuki Hall will be teaching an 8-week watercolor class titled “Watercolor Working with Perspective” starting March 26. The class will meet on Monday mornings from 9:30 to 12:30. In this 8-week course, students will learn fundamental concepts and application of both aerial and linear perspective. Perspective is by far the most important tool to create a sense of 3-dimensional depth in a 2-dimensional picture plane. Used effectively, it allows us to inject a powerful mood and atmosphere in your paintings. However, many students are intimidated about the term “perspective,” thinking it is only understood by artists with some architectural or engineering background. Nothing is farther from the truth. Perspective, discussed and demonstrated in simple, step-by-step fashion with practical examples, can be easily understood and utilized by students of any background and any skill level. A generous amount of class time will be spent on drawing lessons using various perspective tools, as well as other design concepts that are important for creating paintings with strong visual impact. Yuki’s highly organized, friendly, and non-intimidating teaching style has been well received for years by students of all levels. The cost for this 8-week class is $105. To register, please send the payment and the registration form to Yuki Hall, 4136 Fox Fern Ct. Beavercreek, OH 45432.  For any questions regarding this class, please call or email Yuki at 937-679-2464, [email protected] or www.yukihallfineart.com . Registration forms are available in the Gallery or may be printed out from the attachment .

“As the former content director of The Artist’s Magazine, Pastel Journal, Drawing, and Acrylic Artist, and longtime editor of Watercolor Artist, I’ve been involved in the arts for more than 20 years, and one of the most exciting phenomena to happen in that time has been the explosion of interest in plein air painting. I’ve been a fan of PleinAir Magazine from the time it was first published and was delighted to see it come back in 2011.  Dear Members, Patrons, and Friends,

Thanks to all members for their continued support  of the FAA. This is a rough time of the year due to weather. Keep working on your arts and crafts so that when we have shows, we will have plenty of items to show off. Every once in while we get requests from businesses to see if we have any members who wish to put their work on display in their business. Some are even mentioning that we can put sales prices on the items. The City of Fairborn is currently looking for paintings to hang in some offices. They say we can put prices on them, possibly can sell some. If you are interested in showing your work and or selling it, contact me with an email and I will  pass this info along to these businesses. Sounds like a great chance to advertise our association and your works. Hope to see you at our meeting on February 6 at 7:00 pm. The Board will meet at 6:00 pm.

FEBRUARY SPEAKER—PETER FREDERICK

Peter is a self-taught watercolor artist who has focused primarily on the landscapes of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Kentucky. Though he began painting in 1999, four young children and a busy career as a landscape designer prevented him from painting seriously until 2009. His work typically does not contain a message or a particular statement about life or politics. Rather, he is content when the viewer lingers in front of a piece, enjoying it. Often, Peter is told by his viewers and collectors that his paintings remind them of something from their past. Peter taught a weekly watercolor class at the Rosewood Art Centre in Kettering, Ohio. He also taught watercolor classes and workshops at Studio 14 Gallery in Tipp City, Ohio, and for other private organizations.

With a busy family (his children are now 10-16), Peter’s time is at a premium, but he still enjoys teaching when time allows. Peter was featured in an episode of Think TV’s “The Art Show” in 2014. Since 2009, he has shown his work often in juried competitions, invitational exhibitions, and solo exhibitions. Among them are The Ohio Watercolor Society’s traveling show, “Art at The Mill” at historic Bear’s Mill in Greenville, Ohio, and the International Exhibition of Works on Paper in Philadelphia, Pa. He holds signature memberships in The Ohio Watercolor Society, Philadelphia Water Color Society, and Western Ohio Watercolor Society.

BAD WEATHER MEETING CANCELLATION

We will follow recommendations of the media weather reports. When they say travel would be dangerous, we will cancel our scheduled meeting. The Board will communicate with each other by phone and you will be notified by email as soon as a decision is reached. Be sure to check your email before starting out if the weather is bad. If you do not have email access, please call one of the Board members or a member you know who has email access.

BOARD CHANGE

JoAnne Rumple has turned over her duties as Publicity Chair to James Gifford. James recently joined FAA after attending several meetings with his wife, Connie. James is a skilled photographer and some of his photos were included on our website even before he joined. James will make contact with all available news agencies for FAA events. Thank you for your service, JoAnne.

We have several new members who have joined recently. If you see a new face, please welcome and make him/her comfortable.

OPEN PAINTING SESSIONS AT OUR GALLERY

Thursday Paint-In group meets each Thursday from 9:30 till 12:30 (usually later) for watercolor painting. Connie Gifford and Shirlee Bauer coordinate the group and send out an email each week confirming the meeting. New members are welcome. Because we are using the FAA Gallery, we collect a fee to pay for the use of the Gallery, but all things considered, the fee for each session is well worth it for gathering together with other watercolor artists to share ideas and get inspired. We all have a wonderful time and enjoy watercolor painting together. If you have questions, please contact Connie Gifford or Shirlee Bauer by phone or email.

Friday Artists meet at 10 am and paint until 1 or 2 pm each week, with a break at noon for lunch. We meet each week continuously unless there is something else scheduled in the FAA Gallery. Billie Dickson coordinates the group and we don’t paint if only two of us will be there, but anyone can contact Billie to find out if we are on schedule for that week. We expect people who come regularly to be FAA members and pay a fee each week (pays for lights, etc.). It is basically an open work session for artists in any medium and we would love to have others join us. If you have questions, you can contact Billie Dickson by email or phone.

Featured Artist for February 2018 – Mary C. Bell

Mary C. Bell is a 1996 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a bachelor’s degree in Education with a dual major in French and Art. She taught 9 of her 15 years of teaching in Dayton as a French teacher. Mary has been a member of the Fairborn Art Association since 2001. She enjoys primarily watercolor “plein air” and acrylic. She challenged herself to daily painting over 10 years ago while teaching at Colonel White High School. The school colors were green and gold. She chose the colors green, yellow and blue to represent each school day. She only managed to complete about 50 before quitting the challenge. Last year around Christmas time, she decided to try again to complete a full year of diary paintings. She changed the colors to red, yellow and orange. She felt like red, blue and purple would be too dark. Each 4″x 6″ canvas board represents the activity of a single day. Circles represent people. It could be lunch with a friend, dinner with family or a club meeting. A line with a hump or two represents a vehicle. It could represent traveling or car trouble. All of the paintings are dated and titled on the back. Her 365 paintings will be on display for the month of February at the Fairborn Art Association gallery located at 221 North Central Ave, Fairborn, Ohio 45324. The gallery is located at the back of the building. The gallery is open every Sunday in February from 1:00-4:00 pm.

Dear Members, Patrons, and Friends,

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and are filled with all the great food. We will have our Christmas meeting Dec. 5th. Come dressed up and bring an exchange item as Santa will  be there. Please bring your favorite covered dish to share. Come early to look and buy at our Holiday Bazaar starting at 5:30 pm. The meeting will start at 7 pm. Remember that there is no meeting in January. We will be looking to get the New Year started. Please make one of your resolutions that you will have more time to spend with family and friends. This will give you a great time to relax and possibly work on some new ideas for your painting or crafts.

FAA HOLIDAY ARTS & CRAFT BAZAAR Will Be Back This Year!

At this time, we are only accepting registration for table space for Dec. 2 (Sat.) and Dec. 3 (Sun.) as well as wall space.  No table space is available for Dec. 5 (Tue. before the FAA Christmas  party). Items that can be sold at the Bazaar will include paintings, photography, wood worker items, jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, fiber art, etc. No commercially made items or art supplies will be permitted to be sold. If you wish to participate in the Bazaar, you will purchase a table space and/or wall space to display your art. You will be responsible to tend your own table and make sales. It is highly recommended that you will be present at your table during the entire sales hours. However, if it is not possible, you can send in an alternative person to take care of the sales or make a prior arrangement with another artist participating in the bazaar. Neither FAA nor the Bazaar organizer (Yuki Hall) will be responsible for your sales if no one is at your station. If you are only showing 2-D art on the wall and do not have a table, you are not required to be present in the gallery. Instead, you can leave the phone number on the title cards of your paintings so that the potential buyer can contact you to arrange the sale. No inventory sheets are necessary. You set up your own station and you make your own sales!

Pre-registration is necessary to participate in this Bazaar. Please refer to the Registration Form for more details about how to participate. Registration Forms will be available in the Gallery and are attached. Any questions about the Bazaar, please contact Yuki Hall, at 937-679-2464 or email [email protected].

TRASH DISPOSAL

 Dear Members, Patrons, and Friends,

The November meeting is coming soon on November 7 at 7 pm. and I hope that all of you can make it. A couple of things that I need to remind each and everyone about. First: The holiday craft show and sales coming up – hope you all are making your paintings and crafts for it. Let’s get back into having this each year as this may not be a grand money maker but it does expose the FAA to many people other than members. This is a chance for FAA to get better known in our community. Second item: Thanksgiving is coming. It will be a time for each of us to sit down with our families and friends and enjoy fellowship. It also is a time to put away all those games, phones, etc. Let us not forget what we have to be thankful for and let it be a time to remember those who are not as fortunate as ourselves.  Hope to see you all at the meetings.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We really need someone to help Carole Collett in the kitchen on meeting nights. You would need to be here a little earlier than 7 pm to help get tables ready with plates, napkins, tableware, drinks, ice, etc. Then as food is brought in, you will help Carol get it warmed up if necessary and out to the tables. Sometimes drinks and ice need to be renewed during a meeting. And cleanup at the end of the meeting – take food to kitchen, remove all service items and re-store for next time, wash used items, and take out trash. Carol cannot do all this by herself. Please call Carol or another Board member to volunteer to help her.

LOUISE JACKSON POURING ACRYLICS CLASS

Louise Jackson is offering a very unusual class on Monday November 27. She will teaching a class on pouring acrylics on canvas. This technique produces beautiful, colorful paintings than anyone can do and they are highly marketable and make great gifts for Christmas, etc. She has spent months to find the easiest and safest recipe that creates unique effects. You will do at least three paintings in the 5-hour class, maybe more. All paint will be provided. A supply list will be sent to students on registration. The class is limited to 14. Cost is $40. No deposit required this time, but if cancellation is needed a notification is requested. Class is from 10 am till 3:30 pm. Watercolors work with the technique as well and some will be available to try. Register by calling Louise at 937-886-5238 or email her at [email protected].

SWEET CORN FESTIVAL WRAPUP

The Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival Committee is pleased that we had another good year at the festival. We made $11,000 plus. This includes watermelon booth, money from booklets, and money from booths. We had great weather and a very good crowd. We have heard very good reports on our Facebook. We want to thank each and everyone that took part. It takes a lot to make it happen. Don’t forget that we are already starting to work on next year. Please mark the dates on your calendar. It is the third full weekend in August. The dates will be  Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19. We also need help on Thursday, August 16 and Friday, August 17.  We will have a meeting Thursday, November 16, 2017  at 7:00 p.m. to start working on next year. Anyone wishing to help is invited. Thanks again for all of your help.                      …Submitted by Sue Red, Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival Committee

MIDDLE TOWN ARTS CENTER SHOW

The MAC Area Art Exhibition is a juried show running from October 20 to November 16, 2017. It is a wonderful show and worth the time to go and view all the fantastic works of art at their gallery. Several of our members had their paintings accepted into the show, Shirlee Bauer, Pat Dunker, Rose Schultz, Yuki Hall, and Sherry Li Cai (hope I did not miss anyone else). Yuki Hall was awarded Best of Show for her watercolor “Monterey Harbor II,” and Rose Schultz won First Place in Mixed Media for “Still Standing.”                  …Submitted by Connie Gifford

GIFFORD FAMILY ART EXHIBIT

The Lathrem Senior Center, 2900 Glengarry Drive, Kettering, OH 45420, will have the Hallway Art Exhibit from November and December. Three generations of the Gifford family will be presenting their work.

Connie S. Gifford, a native Daytonian, has resided in Kettering for 30 plus years. A 1999 Sinclair Community College graduate, she first started watercolor classes at Rosewood Art Center with instructor Leonard Williams in 2011. She continues to paint, study watercolor, and develop as a watercolorist and has won several awards. She is an associate member of the Ohio Watercolor Society, and has a second painting accepted into the 2017 40th Annual Exhibition at the Columbus Museum of Art (including the traveling show). She is a member of the Western Ohio Watercolor Society and Fairborn Art Association. Other interests are photography, hiking, biking and working with children.

James M. Gifford, was born in Dayton and has resided in Kettering for over 30 years. Jim has enjoyed photography since setting up a makeshift darkroom as a Boy Scout developing black and white prints. He expanded his skills and took a variety of photographs while a Dayton Police officer. Jim also worked in the darkroom and as a photographer for the Fairborn Daily Herald. His great love in photography is catching the unusual shot: a macro close-up of a bee on a flower; bikes at a university in England; and the majesty of nature. Jim recently retired from WPAFB and is also an ordained Southern Baptist minister.

Brandi Gifford Harris is a Kettering resident. A 1998 Fairmont graduate, she resides in Kettering with husband Brock, and their two daughters Destiny and Addison. A full-time Nanny, she forms art around just that: children and family. Mostly candid shots of her day-to-day adventures with children, a 170-pound Great Dane named Monty and a pint size pit named Nikko, she has also begun to compose a book of the adventures relating to each picture. A book of humor, life, and love written in a style like Erma Bombeck, her favorite author. You can view a glimpse of this humor through her photography

Destiny Harris is a 10th grade student, with ECOT online school, who has a love and passion for art and photography. A somewhat newbie to photography, Destiny has a natural eye for capturing a story through the eye of the camera. She hopes to continue with photography in the years ahead.
