FAIRBORN ART ASSOCIATION NEWS!

Fine Arts Tent at Sweet Corn Festival

After a 3- or 4-year absence, the FAA members’ fine arts tent was back at the Sweet Corn Festival this year.  Many people came through to look, buy, and learn about our group.  I want to thank everyone who helped with the tent in every way, from Clarice Moore who gave us the idea and brought many people to the tent by offering her caricature drawings, to Jane Trame for sharing her notes on running the tent and helping to staff it, to all the members and four husbands who helped set up the artwork and take it down.  Thanks to all the members who brought in works for sale and sat in the tent to sell our offerings.  We did sell a painting, several prints, and many purses! Besides the caricatures, we had two other members demonstrating their painting techniques, Tom Hock and Cass Barth. Other members who offered their work for sale and/or volunteered in the tent were Gayle and Robert Beireis, Susan Bertke, Sue Brezine, Misuk Goltz (and Mark), Yuki Hall, Teiko Hawkins (and Jerry), Cora Newell (and Jeff), Mary Peirano, Connie Webber (and Don), and Mayumi Kiefer’s husband, Steve.  Thanks to you all.  It was a great opportunity and a fun weekend. —Submitted by Dora Lawson

NEW WATERCOLOR CLASSES WITH YUKI HALL
Yuki Hall will be offering a Thursday evening class (6 pm–9 pm) starting May 2 at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery. This course is identical to the course taught in March and April, but is offered in the evening hours. In this 8-week course, Yuki will teach you how to inject mood and atmosphere in your watercolor painting, reducing the subject matter into your personal visual language without being bogged down with unnecessary details. Yuki will also be offering a new Monday morning class (9:30–12:30) starting June 10. In this 8-week course, Yuki will teach you how to break away from a coloring-in painting style and start painting with confident brush strokes for a more spontaneous and impressionistic appearance, full of atmosphere. Strong emphasis will be placed on tonal value pattern, edge quality, and color temperature dominance, as well as the roles of lead-in and effective use of perspective tools to create sense of depth in your painting. This class is designed to help you gain insight in discovering the true quality of watercolor so that you can create paintings with maximum visual and emotional impact. All levels are welcome.

The cost for each of these 8-week courses is $85. To register, please send the payment and the attached registration form to Yuki Hall, 4136 Fox Fern Ct. Beavercreek, OH 45432. For any questions regarding this class, call or e-mail Yuki at 937-426-7229, or email [email protected].

April 2013 Newsletter

Greetings Members and Patrons,

As I write, it is still raining and will continue most of this week. Water is such a blessing for all living things, so necessary for our health, our earth, and for Spring Flowers to pop up and delight us as the weather changes and brings warmth and hope of a beautiful colorful season. I hope this finds you all looking forward to our April 2nd Meeting with our special guest, visual artist and poet, Rosie Huart. Board meeting at 6:00, gathering at 6:30 for sign in and social, and meeting beginning at 7:00. Come, bring along a friend or two, or more, enjoy getting acquainted, be fed, both mentally and physically, and have fun through it all. See you there!!

NOMINATING COMMITTEE
It’s that time of year for us to look at what talent and time we may wish to give to help F.A.A. continue to be the vibrant and strong, long running art organization in the area. We have incredible talent among us and you all know a few have been giving years of time on our board and committees. Please consider if this may be your year to step up. Even if it is to assist.

Our Nominating Committee Chair, Clarice Moore will present a slate of Board candidates for the coming year, 2013/2014. These names will be read at our April 2, 2013 meeting, and nominations will also be accepted from the floor. Elections will take place at our May meeting.

Officers: President – presides over meetings; Vice President – program facilitator; Recording Secretary – records minutes of board meeting; Corresponding Secretary – gathers information, prints and mails monthly newsletter; Treasurer – records collection of dues, gifts and outgoing monies. All Officers attend the monthly Board meeting before the monthly meetings.

Committee Chairpersons: Greeting Host, Refreshments, Workshops, Sunshine, Photographer, Corn Festival, Facility Manager, Historian, Gallery Coordinator (Shows), Publicity.

As you can see, it takes a lot of volunteers to keep us going. Think about what you may like to do!

2013 Spring Prospectus

March 2013 Newsletter

Dear Members and Patrons,

SPRING IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER!! And aren’t we looking forward to the beauty that surprises us, no matter how many times we have witnessed the miracles of creation. Let’s hope the weather allows us to have a wonderful March meeting with our guest speaker, Rusty Hardin, whose talents will be valuable to all of us no matter what medium we prefer. So, call your friends, invite them to join you March 5, 6:30 gathering, 7:00 short meeting, followed by hospitality and good nourishment and then Demo begins. You’ll find our faithful greeter, Larry Hawkins there to sign you in. So Come On Along!

Sue Brezine
President

MARCH SPEAKER—RUSTY HARDEN
Rusty Harden is a self-taught artist who has lived in Ohio’s Miami Valley for a number of years. Through perseverance, Rusty set about learning the fundamentals of her craft. Discovering an affinity for watercolors, the synergy that followed began to inspire all of Rusty’s artistic endeavors. Rusty has had the honor of her work being included in juried, community, and solo exhibits. Her work is shown in numerous galleries, corporate and private collections. As an instructor of workshops, classes and an inspirational speaker, she believes it is her privilege and responsibility to create new artists. Rusty owns, publishes and hosts an online art gallery, Art Challenge Gallery (www.artchallengegallery.com) . She is represented by three galleries: Studio 14, Tipp City, Ohio; Wombat Artworks, Waynesville, Ohio; Creative Framing, Franklin, North Carolina. Rusty’s presentation is entitled, “Reference Photos to Strong Composition in Artwork.” Interpreting artwork from a photo reference that already has strong elements of design may not be a challenge. But having an unremarkable photo reference or having more than one photograph to work from requires seeing the possibilities. Rusty takes us through examples of working with mediocre photo references to build strong composition for artwork. She will paint a demonstration in acrylic on canvas.
