FAIRBORN ART ASSOCIATION NEWS!

FAA Cancellations

Our FAA Board has voted to CANCEL our April and May meetings and our Misuk Goltz workshop. Our Member Show is postponed. We are looking at October as a new month for the show. Any deposits for the workshop will be returned and you should hear from our Workshop Chair in the next couple of weeks. We are working through taking care of business that was scheduled to be addressed at the meetings. Please check out our April newsletter for further information.

In addition, the Fairborn Senior Apartment building is under self quarantine. Therefore, ALL activities at the FAA Gallery are cancelled until further notice.

Hopefully we all will follow the guidelines to self isolate in our country and that will help us get through this time of danger from this serious illness quickly. I hope you are all healthy, and that you stay that way.

Special Notices

  1. We sadly report the death of our member Anita Wilson after a long battle with cancer. Her family will join us for a memorial at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery on Thursday, March 19, from 5 to 7:30 pm. Cards may be sent to her address in our Directory.

  1. We are cancelling our April Members meeting to help increase the safety of our members from acquiring the Covid-19 virus. The Board will meet at 6 pm in the main Gallery so we can spread apart and not be crowded together in the tiny office. Be sure to look for our April newsletter to be available online the last week of March. By then, we may have news relating to future plans or cancellations (hopefully none).

MARCH 2020 NEWSLETTER

Hello All,

March is nearly here and the early signs of spring are all around us. I have daffodils, tulips, and crocus poking through the mulch, and the birds are beginning to sing their spring songs.  Just the other day I saw another sign – bags of mulch were being unloaded at the local hardware store.

March 1 is the opening date for the Greene County Senior Show, which runs for the first three Sundays from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and closes on March 18 at 2:00 p.m. It is always a beautiful show so I hope you will bring your friends to view the show and celebrate senior artists and artisans in Greene County.

Daylight Savings Time begins March 8, so we will be able to enjoy an extra hour of daylight in the evenings. St. Patrick’s Day is March 17, and the official first day of Spring is March 19.

Several FAA members enjoyed a tour of the historic Osborne area of Fairborn on February 10. This is the area designated for artists to find inspiration for the BW Greenway Landscape Show. We saw several interesting and unique architectural elements to paint. The tour guide indicated another tour would be held in May when flowers and trees are blooming. Be looking for information on that, and be sure to pick up a prospectus for the show so you will know how to enter your artwork.

FAA is well represented by members who have paintings in the Aqueous Ohio, Southwest 2020 by the Ohio Watercolor Society at Sinclair Community College in Mason. The show runs through May 29.  If you want to view the art online, please go to https://www/ohiowatercolorsociety.org/Exhibitions/index.html and then look under Regional Exhibits.

Please keep the families of Maggie Vance and Mark Bauer (Shirlee Bauer’s husband) in your thoughts and prayers as they mourn the loss of their loved ones. Members Lois Kuck and Anita Wilson are still battling health problems. If you know of others who need our support, please let a Board member know, or send the information to Jackie Albright so we know to reach out to them.

Correction:  Our March speaker is Kate Santucci who does Encaustic Art.  I hope you are as interested as I am to learn more about this art form. The meeting is Tuesday, March 3 at 7 p.m. Louise Jackson will be our speaker at our April 7th meeting. End of Correction

Please open your heart to volunteering to help FAA. We will be needing people to run for office and filling various other positions, including being part of the Nominating Committee in March. It is also time to sign up to help at the Sweet Corn Festival in August. YOU are needed and wanted.  I recently read an article on stess reduction techniques, and one of them was to be a volunteer!  Please let me know if that could be you, and if you are asked, please remember your “YES” is needed.

Joe Miller (AKA Cheap Joe) says, “Sometimes a blank canvas is a napkin and a studio is a restaurant.”  Art is all around us, we just have to open our minds to the possibilities.

Greetings,

As I write this in mid-January, we have experienced the mildest winter I can remember (I’m not complaining!). I keep wondering what this foretells for February and March. This prompts me to remind you that if we have bad winter weather on a meeting day, we follow Fairborn school closings. If they are closed, so are we. We will try to reschedule for the following week, and will communicate that by e-mail and by posting on our Facebook page.

Our February speaker is our own Yuki Hall. She will be talking about sketching during her recent trip to Europe. She is always a very dynamic and popular speaker, so it should be an exciting program.

For those who enjoyed the Christmas decorations at our holiday party, please thank the Thursday painting group who decorated, and the Friday painting group who carefully packed them away for next year.

If you enjoy painting and sharing with other members, please remember we have the Thursday group which focuses on watercolor and the Friday group which is open to a variety of media, and we have recently added a group on Wednesday which paints “en plein air” during the warmer months and paints inside the gallery in the winter months. To get more information about the groups, contact Carol Collett at [email protected] for Wednesday, Connie Gifford at [email protected] for Thursday, and Billie Dickson at [email protected] for Friday. The cost is $1 per visit and the group sharing is priceless.

Please welcome Debbie Cosenza, who has agreed to be our Meeting Greeter going forward.

I’ve been made aware of several members who have had a variety of health problems since we last met. Please look out for each other and let us know if we can help these folks out. Some are still ill and others are healing and others have family members who are ill, but I know Warren Brown, Shirlee Bauer, Lois Kuck, Connie Weber, Anita Wilson, Jackie Albright, and Sheryl Scott would all appreciate a card or an email of encouragement and comfort. Please let someone on our Board know if others need us to reach out. I’m going to try to include a list in each newsletter going forward.

We are very sorry to report that Maggie Vance lost her battle with cancer this weekend. Information for arrangements should be available Tuesday or Wednesday. Our condolences to her family and friends.

After earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering, she had a career as an engineer in the automotive industry until 2006, when she decided to leave the workforce and start an artistic journey.  Holiday Greetings!

FAA is kicking off the season with our 2019 Holiday Party. We meet at 7 pm on Tuesday, December 3. Please bring a refreshment to share, and if you wish to participate in our gift exchange, please bring a small seasonal item ($10 – $15), wrapped but with no names on it. We will have some fun with it for sure.

Please be sure to like our new beautiful Facebook page (the colorful one) and if you have already liked or followed our old page please unlike or unfollow that one so we can discard it. FB search Fairborn Art Association.

We will take a short winter break in January, but we will be back to our regular meeting schedule in February, 2020. Our speaker will be the ever-popular Yuki Hall and she will talk about her recent European painting trip and sketching. Meeting is Tuesday, February 4 at 7 pm.

Now that winter weather is upon us, please remember if Fairborn schools are closed due to weather, we will not meet that night. If weather worsens during the day, we will attempt to send an e-mail blast out to you. Of course, we want everyone to be safe, so if the meeting has not been officially cancelled but you are not comfortable driving, then please stay home.

MAY 2020 WORKSHOP WITH MISUK GOLTZ

May 4-7, 2020, Fairborn Art Association will welcome Misuk Goltz back to teach a 4-day watercolor workshop.  Misuk has won many awards for her watercolor paintings and is an outstanding teacher. For beginners to more advanced. Misuk has planned a fabulous, informative workshop.

Watercolor Painting for Art Journaling

Your Travels in Sketches and Paintings

with Misuk Goltz

May 4 – 6, 2020

Why Journaling?  Your journal can become a sanctuary where you contemplate, reflect or resolve matters in your life; it’s just like keeping a diary.  Or simply giving you the pleasure of recording the moments in your life you want to remember. If you are an artist, you already have the tools you need to create imaginative journal pages.  Moreover, journaling will allow you to grow your skills as an observer, creator, and painter.  For watercolor painters who want to bring their work to a different level, come and learn different painting methods and practice them with guidance and feedback from the instructor.

Workshop Agenda:

Introduction to Journaling

Brainstorm: “What do I want my journal to be?”  Medium to practice sketching and painting?   Keepsake? Diary?  Travelogue?

Page Design Exercise: Play with different formats: horizontal, vertical, square or your own creation

Journaling Exercise: Demos on painting/sketching (people, landscapes, urban scenes, animals) showing methods and strategies to construct journal pages

Start your journal! Start your painting

Individual discussion (5 minutes for each participant) on each one’s progress

Informal showing of student journals to share ideas

Book Binding: Make your own journal book

This workshop will be at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery from 9:30-4 with an hour for lunch. The cost will be $200 member or $225 non-member, including a $40 nonrefundable deposit which will hold your place for the workshop. Because Misuk has so many followers, get your deposit in soon. Send it to Pat Dunker, 30 Innisbrook Close, Xenia, Ohio 45385. Happy Halloween,

Hope you all are getting your goodies in for all your neighborhood kids (and haven’t eaten them yourselves already). Halloween seems to kick off the holiday season each year. How fun!

Wanted to make you aware of a benefit of membership we have not promoted lately. YOU can have a show in the Gallery at no charge. It can be a one-person member show or a group show (all must be members in a group show), and it can be for two weeks or up to a month. You are responsible for hanging, having the gallery open for visitors, promoting the show, refreshments, etc. You keep all the proceeds from your sales. To get further information and inquire about available dates, please contact our Gallery Coordinator, Lori Luckner. The more shows we have, the more people are exposed to what a wonderful little Gallery we have.

Reminder that our December meeting is our Holiday Party. There will be no speaker, but there will be lots of fun. Everyone brings refreshments that night so start planning.

Our November speaker is pastel artist Kathryn Smithson. Meeting is November 5, 2019 at 7 p.m.

Joe Miller, aka Cheap Joe, says, “Don’t paint things the way they are, paint them the way you want them to look.”

 Hello All,

With September nearly over it is time to look forward to painting those beautiful fall colors and those long shadows created by the sun as our Earth slowly turns away and prepares for winter.

The vote to revise our Constitution and By-Laws passed at the September meeting. Please ask a Board member if you would like to see them.

We’ve had several volunteers come forward to work on making the Library more accessible.  Already they have cleared out more shelf space for the new books that have come in and are working on cataloging and making the books available for members.  Please remember, you MUST check out the book and put the card in the card box.  There is no set return date but please keep in mind that newer books will want to be read by more people, so return them as soon as you have finished with them.  Place returns in the appropriate box and we will take care of the reshelving.  Thanks to Carole Collett, Lucy Burns and Barb Olekas for working on this project!

Reminder that the Brush Before Brain Event with Mike Elsass is on Tuesday, September 24 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Mike’s Front Street Gallery.  Cost is $60 and you must preregister.  Contact Fran Watson to get the registration link.

There are a few spaces left in the Judi Betts workshop October 1 through 4.  Judi is a fantastic artist and a wonderful and friendly instructor.  She was invited back by popular demand, so register now to make sure you get in.  Look on our website for a registration link, or contact Pat Dunker.

Judi Betts is our speaker for our October 1 meeting.  She will do a demo for us in watercolor.  Judi is a signature member of several national art organizations, including the prestigious American Watercolor Society.

The art on the wall for October is the fall show of the Western Ohio Watercolor Society.  This is the first time FAA has shown the work of another art organization.  We agreed to sponsor the show, and the timing is a perfect tie in with our watercolor demo for our meeting.

Meeting starts at 7 p.m.  Board meeting begins at 6 p.m.  As always, members are welcome to attend the Board meeting.  Contact me before September 24 if there is something you would like to see on the agenda.

Greetings,

Wow, our summer, which had such a late start, is already winding down. September seems to usher in the “busyness” of fall before we are ready.

We have had a busy summer at FAA. The Landscape show was a huge success for the BW Greenway in July, the annual Sweet Corn Festival was in August, and you will notice a freshly painted Gallery, kitchen, and office when you arrive. The restroom was renovated and painted in the spring.

Please help us keep our space looking fresh and new as long as possible. Protect all surfaces by covering art tables, promptly wiping up spills and spatters, picking up chairs and tables when moving them (rather than dragging them), and emptying out the refrigerator and trash cans when you leave. The office has been cleaned out and we want to keep it looking that way, so please put things away rather than leaving them on the table or counter for someone else to deal with. Same goes for the kitchen (please, no food left on the counter)!

Our first meeting is on Tuesday, September 3, with Sharon Stolzenberger as our speaker. She is an art instructor as Sinclair Community College and is best known for her mixed media pieces.

We will have our annual used art supply sale prior to the meeting, so plan to come early and shop. If you want to set up a table to sell your used but still usable art supplies please contact Connie Gifford ([email protected]) and she can give you the details. You are responsible for your own sales and you get to keep all your proceeds.

We’ve had several new donations to our library, and books are awaiting cataloging and shelving. We have made several attempts in the past to handle this but no continuity. So, if someone would like to be our Librarian, we would welcome your service (this can even be a group effort). There is a database (out of date) to get you started, and it would be a longer-term commitment, but worth the effort if we are to continue having the library available. Contact me ([email protected]m) or Jackie Albright ([email protected]) and we will talk.

Meeting begins at 7 pm, but come 45 to 60 minutes early to shop. Board meeting begins at 6 pm.

Hope to see you there.

SEPTEMBER SPEAKER—SHARON STOLZENBERGER

 Hello All,

It’s End of Year Celebration time!  Our meeting on June 4 is a celebration of a successful season instead of a regular meeting. If you are attending, please bring food or drink to share for refreshments! Yes, everyone. We will have tables set up so you won’t have to balance your plate on your lap.

We will vote for the artwork entered in the People’s Choice Exhibit (see article below), and present awards for your artwork; thank our volunteer leaders for 2018-19; install new officers; announce the Sweet Corn Festival Royalty for 2019; announce our three scholarship winners – Mia Agidenreich from Stivers School of the Arts, Jada Keplinger from Global Impact STEM Academy, and Aliya Moss from Greenon High School. It is a fun evening.

Dues and the Member Information Sheet accompanying dues were due June 1, but we will still allow you to pay them on June 4 to be included in the directory.

Please sign up to help with the Sweet Corn Festival August 17, 18, 19. This is our major fundraiser and helps pay for Scholarships and rent. Contact Warren Brown at 937-879-2859 or [email protected] if you have not already signed up. All hands are needed!

Our FaceBook site (bet you didn’t even know there was one) is being deactivated mid June, but expect a new refreshed site by mid July. Lots of updated information about all our events will be there, and we will send an email blast when it is up and running again. We are working on the website as well.

The Gallery will be painted this summer and the restroom has already been updated. Please be sure to remove your art and other personal belongings after the June meeting to make it easier for the painters. Items left in the office, kitchen (including refrigerator), and gallery will be thrown out or donated unless prior arrangements are made. Be sure to thank Roger and Jean Browning after you are pleasantly surprised with the new look.

Next meeting is Tuesday, September 3 at 7 pm.  Board meeting is at 6 pm.

YUKI  HALL WORKSHOPS

Outdoor Sketching Workshops

Yuki Hall will be teaching Session 2 of her outdoor sketching workshops “Fun with outdoor sketching” June 11–June 13, 2019.  This is the second of two independent sessions and students can still register for this one. We will be sketching at Cox Arboretum, Carriage Hill Farm as well as The Greene. In this workshop, students will learn about the variety of sketching supplies available, how to select and simplify a complex subject by extracting the most important feature of the subject while leaving unnecessary details out. You will also learn how to steer away from illustrative ‘coloring-in’ sketching style, but to paint in painterly fashion and add finesse to your sketching. We will be sketching mainly with watercolor, with additional use of both permanent and water-soluble pens. All levels are welcome. The cost includes two types of pens.  For more information or/and to register contact Yuki at (937) 679-2464, [email protected].

3-Day Indoor Watercolor Workshop

Yuki will also offer a 3-day indoor workshop, “Watercolor – Painting Loosely” at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery from June 24 to June 26, 2019. In this workshop, students will learn how to break away from coloring-in painting style and start painting watercolor with confident brush strokes and expressive edge qualities for more spontaneous and impressionistic appearance. In addition, effective use of eloquent calligraphy will be discussed. This workshop is designed to help students gain insight in discovering the true quality of watercolor so that he/she can create paintings with maximum visual and emotional impact. The cost for this workshop is $140.  For more information or/and to register, contact Yuki at (937) 679-2464, [email protected]. A brochure/registration form for each of Yuki’s workshops is attached.
