Hello Everyone,
It’s been a rough two months for us all and I hope everyone has stayed healthy.
Congratulations to our 2020-21 Board members who were elected by mail this month. We will be meeting soon to make sure we continue to provide the good programs and shows we all have come to enjoy.
After two long months we have decided to reopen the Gallery on a limited basis. Our small groups (Board and Sweet Corn Festival meetings, Thursday and Friday paint groups) will be allowed to use the Gallery beginning June 1. There are restrictions on group size, social distancing, use of PPE, food consumption and cleaning. Those guidelines are posted elsewhere in this newsletter, and on signs throughout the Gallery.
The Landscape Show by the B-W Greenway will continue on the previously announced dates. Work will be accepted on Saturday, June 27 from 1–3 pm. You will not be allowed to enter the Gallery at that time. Your work will be accepted outside, or at the door, so please have your paperwork completed and your payment ready to hand over with your art. The brochure can be accessed by a link in this newsletter. If there is a line, please make sure you stand 6 feet away from each other, and then leave as soon as you have handed in your work. You will not all be able to stop in the “No Parking Zone”, so please make sure to leave it free of vehicles. Prize winners will be notified individually and you may pick up your awards at the Sunday, June 12 show date. THERE WILL NOT BE AN OPENING RECEPTION AND AWARDING OF PRIZES, in order to keep the number of people in the gallery at one time to 10 people or less. The show is open on June 12, 19, and 26 from 1–3 pm. Pick up your artwork on Sunday, July 26 from 3–4 pm. There will be a limit of 10 persons in the Gallery at any one time, and face masks are required. For more information, please contact Pat Higgins at [email protected] or Bob Coates at [email protected].
As of the writing of this letter, May 18, 2020, the Sweet Corn Festival is still on. That is subject to change based on a number of factors, but please say yes to helping to put this on anyway. This Festival can’t happen without our volunteers! You will be notified asap if the status changes.
Please check our Facebook page regularly as updates will be posted as needed. Also, please LIKE our Facebook page. As always, email blasts will be used to notify of important information.
Thank you all for your patience and by showing you care for each other by wearing facemasks and keeping your hands clean, and by not visiting FAA if you have not been feeling well.
Just a reminder that our June 2 meeting (Social and People’s Choice Show) has been cancelled. Our next FAA meeting is September 1 at 7 pm.

SWEET CORN FESTIVAL—AUGUST 15 AND 16, 2020
The committee met on Tuesday, May 12, via Zoom, and plan on face-to-face meeting June 9 at 7 pm in the FAA Gallery. Our current plan is to continue with planning, and we will make the final decision by July 15. That decision will be guided by the Federal, State and local authorities. Additionally, if the Fairborn Music Club and Chess Club are advised by the School authorities to not participate, we will not go forward. Until those issues are clear we will move forward with planning – so if you would, please sign up for duties at the festival. We are asking our participants and vendors to practice social distancing and come prepared to wear a mask. We will ask the customers to practice social distancing and strongly suggest they wear a mask. Questions to me at 937-371-8531 or [email protected] ,

Reservations are now being accepted. Please send a $40 nonrefundable deposit to reserve your place in the workshop. Bruce Neville’s workshop will be filled with information to help you process the painting, in developing your own style and adding that freshness to your work. Each day Bruce will start the subject demo and will demonstrate how he will approach the subject and show the processes he goes through. The loose style, the light process, where the values are critical to bring your eye into the focal point of the painting. Drawing and perspective will also be discussed and he will provide some shortcuts to develop the painting. For additional information, please contact Pat Dunker at [email protected] .

Hello All,
While we have been staying at home, we have tried to carry on Fairborn Art Association’s business. We had our April Board meeting by ZOOM. It was a new experience for us, but it was productive with decisions made on how to conduct an Election of Officers without a meeting, how to get necessary volunteers for the Sweet Corn Festival, and how to make it possible for you to pay your dues without a show or meeting.
With that being said, you should have all received your envelope with three very important documents that must be returned to FAA. Your best bet is to complete all three and return them, along with your check for dues, to Fairborn Art Association, PO BOX 1231, Fairborn, OH 45324. Put it in the mail by Monday, May 4 to get it in by the ballot deadline.
We may be conducting our meetings and workshops with social distancing in mind in the future, but these are just hurdles to overcome, not permanent barriers. Stay positive, and stay well!

MEETINGS
As you know, our May meeting is cancelled because of the Governor’s orders to stay at home. The orders may be eased for us to hold our JUNE meeting, which is really a social. We install officers, announce the Sweet Corn Festival Queen and King, and have a People’s Choice one evening art show (you may bring 2 pieces, and you must be present). Prizes are awarded. Everyone brings a dish to share for refreshments. (THIS IS SUBJECT TO CANCELLATION PENDING ORDERS FROM THE GOVERNOR. You will be notified by e-mail and it will be posted on our Facebook page if that happens.)
SCHOLARSHIPS
We also normally announce our scholarship winners at that time, but unfortunately the letters announcing the scholarship arrived at the schools just about the time the Governor ordered them closed, so students were not notified, and no artwork was submitted. Hopefully we will be back on track with several submissions in 2021.
MEMBER SHOW
The Member Show which was cancelled for May has been rescheduled for October. Connie Gifford and Carol Edsall will have the prospectus ready to put on the website as soon as everything is finalized.
WORKSHOPS
The Bruce Neville workshop for October is still on and you may register now. Please contact Pat Dunker for details. The registration form will be on our website soon.
The Misuk Goltz workshop which was scheduled for May has been rescheduled for May 2021. Please contact Pat Dunker for details.

Sue Brezine fell and broke a hip. She has had surgery and is in rehab at Kingston of Miamisburg, 1120 Dunaway Street, Miamisburg, OH 45342. She will be there most likely until April 22. She sure could use some cheering up since no visitors are allowed at this time of the Coronavirus. Her regular cell phone is on the fritz but she can receive calls at 937-500-5284.

Hello All,
Many of you already know that the Fairborn Senior Housing Building has self-quarantined, and so we have closed our Gallery to any meetings, classes, paint outs, etc. until further notice. As a result, our Board has voted to cancel our April meeting, our May meeting, our May workshop, and our Member Show originally scheduled for May. We are working to reschedule the Member Show for possibly October. We hope to reschedule the Misuk Goltz workshop in the future. Pat Dunker, our workshop chair, is working on contacting all participants within the next two weeks. You will not lose your deposits.
We had hoped to announce candidates for Board positions in April, and vote in May. Carol Edsall is working on that and may still have a slate of candidates to announce in this newsletter.
The Board and the Sweet Corn Festival Committee are working on possibly having meetings electronically so the business of Fairborn Art Association can continue. As of now, the June social and the Sweet Corn Festival are still on, but of course that depends on the directives of our Governor. I have not heard from the BW Greenway regarding the Landscape Show scheduled for July, but we will announce any changes through an e-mail blast and our Facebook page.
This reminds me that it is critical for you to share your e-mail address with us. We use it to let you know of changes as quickly as possible, and to send notifications of the newsletter. Of course if you do not have e-mail, we will still continue to mail you the newsletter, but it may not be as timely as an e-mail would be.
I am reminded by Jackie Albright that she is receiving information for the newsletter that is not written as an article but as a personal note. The Corresponding Secretary’s job is not to write the article, it is basically to copy and paste what you have written into the newsletter format. Since we will be voting in a new Corresponding Secretary in May, I am saying now that any future information submitted will not appear in the newsletter if it is not written as an article. Sorry for any inconvenience to you, but it is causing a great inconvenience for the Corresponding Secretary.
Some positive things happening at FAA are Roger Browning has installed two smaller TVs in the Gallery so those sitting in the back can still view demos, and he has installed under cabinet lighting in the kitchen. It makes a huge difference in being able to use the kitchen and to clean up after meetings and other events. Loren Red will be working on repairing the flower boxes flanking the front door so they will continue to hold our beautiful flower gardens. We will be working with our web designer to improve and update our web site, so it will be more appealing and also easier to use. Jackie Albright will take on that task, as she has resigned as Corresponding Secretary after many years of service.
We still have some members who need love and support from us. I’m not getting much information from you all to share, but these are the people I do know about: Loren Red, Lois Kuck, the family of Anita Wilson (who passed away on March 14), and Sheryl Scott. As far as I know our members have been spared from the Covid-19 virus, and I certainly hope that continues.
Stay home, practice social distancing, and wash your hands frequently!
Henry Moore (1898-1986), Sculptor, said, “One never knows what each day is going to bring. The important thing is to be open and ready for it.”

ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Our slate of Officers for the Board are as follows: President, Billie Dickson; Vice President, Carol Edsall; Treasurer, Sue Red; Recording Secretary, Sheryl Scott; Corresponding Secretary, Kenny Moore, who has expressed interest in this position. The Corresponding Secretary will be producing the annual Directory and the monthly newsletter. Jackie Albright will continue administrating our website as Social Media Administrator. If anyone is interested in running for any of these positions please contact the Nominating Committee chair, Carol Edsall, prior to our membership voting in May. Details on voting procedures will be published in the May 2020 newsletter.

MEMBERSHIP DUES FOR 2020/2021
I hope that you are safe and healthy. I just wanted to make you aware that I will be mailing out membership dues notices in late April or early May for the 2020/2021 year. Please keep a watch in your mail for the renewal form and continue supporting the Fairborn Art Association by renewing your membership.

WORKSHOPS
Unfortunately, our May 2020 workshop with Misuk Goltz had to be cancelled and rescheduled for May 2021. If you signed up for Misuk’s workshop, we can tear up your check or send it back. The cancellation is the result of the corona virus outbreak and the concerns of the elderly residents in the senior living center where FAA is housed. Your check could be applied to the October 2020 workshop with Bruce Neville if you so desire. Bruce Neville, an outstanding watercolorist from Cincinnati, will be our guest workshop teacher and demo artist for our October 2020 meeting. More info on the cost, etc. will be published in the May newsletter.
THURSDAY PAINT IN GROUP MEETINGS CANCELLED
With the current situation and the ongoing spread of the COVID-19virus, Shirlee and I have decided to stop our Thursday meetings until we are assured there is not a thread of the COVID-19 virus. Please everyone, take care of yourselves and follow the guidelines that have been given from our doctors and health authorities. You all can create beautiful art at your home and you can pick an art buddy to share your new masterpieces with by email. When things are better, you can bring that masterpiece and share it with the group. If some of TPI friends in this group do not regularly check their email (and you might know them), please call them so they know we are not meeting. Take care everyone and pray for a cure of the COVID-19 virus.

NOTE FROM NITA LELAND
How are my favorite artists getting along? I think of you every day, hoping you are well and managing to cope with the uncertainty of the times.
Bob and I are doing fine. Our daughter Kathleen in Wilmington has taken over our supply line and all I have to do is message a list to her. She and her husband Tim have us and his parents in Middletown to worry about, so we are trying to cooperate with their directives. (“Think ahead. Don’t let yourself run out of anything. Call if you need anything. Stay home. Etc.) My first reaction was my usual “We can manage just fine,” but she convinced us that we are definitely in the at-risk age group and should follow the protocols. We are behaving. They have been so helpful and we are grateful.
I am still having intermittent computer and Wi-Fi and Internet problems, so I can’t be sure this will go out, but I will keep trying. I’m hoping now we will soon see a downturn in the frequency of new cases. We all need to urge family members and friends to maintain social distancing, isolation, and stay home to avoid contact. Did I mention washing your hands? This is not a joke.
Here is another reference to entertain and teach you while you are housebound: Click on “Potpourri” link on my www.nitaleland.com home page. This is my blog, which I haven’t updated for a while, but it has several years of articles on color, creativity, and watercolor plus some of the exhibits we hung at Hithergreen back in the day. It’s really fun to look at those again!.
Now, I’ll see if a click will send this to you! Love you all. Stay safe.

FAA Cancellations
Our FAA Board has voted to CANCEL our April and May meetings and our Misuk Goltz workshop. Our Member Show is postponed. We are looking at October as a new month for the show. Any deposits for the workshop will be returned and you should hear from our Workshop Chair in the next couple of weeks. We are working through taking care of business that was scheduled to be addressed at the meetings. Please check out our April newsletter for further information.
In addition, the Fairborn Senior Apartment building is under self quarantine. Therefore, ALL activities at the FAA Gallery are cancelled until further notice.
Hopefully we all will follow the guidelines to self isolate in our country and that will help us get through this time of danger from this serious illness quickly. I hope you are all healthy, and that you stay that way.

Special Notices
- We sadly report the death of our member Anita Wilson after a long battle with cancer. Her family will join us for a memorial at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery on Thursday, March 19, from 5 to 7:30 pm. Cards may be sent to her address in our Directory.
- We are cancelling our April Members meeting to help increase the safety of our members from acquiring the Covid-19 virus. The Board will meet at 6 pm in the main Gallery so we can spread apart and not be crowded together in the tiny office. Be sure to look for our April newsletter to be available online the last week of March. By then, we may have news relating to future plans or cancellations (hopefully none).

MARCH 2020 NEWSLETTER
Hello All,
March is nearly here and the early signs of spring are all around us. I have daffodils, tulips, and crocus poking through the mulch, and the birds are beginning to sing their spring songs. Just the other day I saw another sign – bags of mulch were being unloaded at the local hardware store.
March 1 is the opening date for the Greene County Senior Show, which runs for the first three Sundays from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and closes on March 18 at 2:00 p.m. It is always a beautiful show so I hope you will bring your friends to view the show and celebrate senior artists and artisans in Greene County.
Daylight Savings Time begins March 8, so we will be able to enjoy an extra hour of daylight in the evenings. St. Patrick’s Day is March 17, and the official first day of Spring is March 19.
Several FAA members enjoyed a tour of the historic Osborne area of Fairborn on February 10. This is the area designated for artists to find inspiration for the BW Greenway Landscape Show. We saw several interesting and unique architectural elements to paint. The tour guide indicated another tour would be held in May when flowers and trees are blooming. Be looking for information on that, and be sure to pick up a prospectus for the show so you will know how to enter your artwork.
FAA is well represented by members who have paintings in the Aqueous Ohio, Southwest 2020 by the Ohio Watercolor Society at Sinclair Community College in Mason. The show runs through May 29. If you want to view the art online, please go to https://www/ohiowatercolorsociety.org/Exhibitions/index.html and then look under Regional Exhibits.
Please keep the families of Maggie Vance and Mark Bauer (Shirlee Bauer’s husband) in your thoughts and prayers as they mourn the loss of their loved ones. Members Lois Kuck and Anita Wilson are still battling health problems. If you know of others who need our support, please let a Board member know, or send the information to Jackie Albright so we know to reach out to them.
Correction: Our March speaker is Kate Santucci who does Encaustic Art. I hope you are as interested as I am to learn more about this art form. The meeting is Tuesday, March 3 at 7 p.m. Louise Jackson will be our speaker at our April 7th meeting. End of Correction
Please open your heart to volunteering to help FAA. We will be needing people to run for office and filling various other positions, including being part of the Nominating Committee in March. It is also time to sign up to help at the Sweet Corn Festival in August. YOU are needed and wanted. I recently read an article on stess reduction techniques, and one of them was to be a volunteer! Please let me know if that could be you, and if you are asked, please remember your “YES” is needed.
Joe Miller (AKA Cheap Joe) says, “Sometimes a blank canvas is a napkin and a studio is a restaurant.” Art is all around us, we just have to open our minds to the possibilities.

Greetings,
As I write this in mid-January, we have experienced the mildest winter I can remember (I’m not complaining!). I keep wondering what this foretells for February and March. This prompts me to remind you that if we have bad winter weather on a meeting day, we follow Fairborn school closings. If they are closed, so are we. We will try to reschedule for the following week, and will communicate that by e-mail and by posting on our Facebook page.
Our February speaker is our own Yuki Hall. She will be talking about sketching during her recent trip to Europe. She is always a very dynamic and popular speaker, so it should be an exciting program.
For those who enjoyed the Christmas decorations at our holiday party, please thank the Thursday painting group who decorated, and the Friday painting group who carefully packed them away for next year.
If you enjoy painting and sharing with other members, please remember we have the Thursday group which focuses on watercolor and the Friday group which is open to a variety of media, and we have recently added a group on Wednesday which paints “en plein air” during the warmer months and paints inside the gallery in the winter months. To get more information about the groups, contact Carol Collett at [email protected] for Wednesday, Connie Gifford at [email protected] for Thursday, and Billie Dickson at [email protected] for Friday. The cost is $1 per visit and the group sharing is priceless.
Please welcome Debbie Cosenza, who has agreed to be our Meeting Greeter going forward.
I’ve been made aware of several members who have had a variety of health problems since we last met. Please look out for each other and let us know if we can help these folks out. Some are still ill and others are healing and others have family members who are ill, but I know Warren Brown, Shirlee Bauer, Lois Kuck, Connie Weber, Anita Wilson, Jackie Albright, and Sheryl Scott would all appreciate a card or an email of encouragement and comfort. Please let someone on our Board know if others need us to reach out. I’m going to try to include a list in each newsletter going forward.
We are very sorry to report that Maggie Vance lost her battle with cancer this weekend. Information for arrangements should be available Tuesday or Wednesday. Our condolences to her family and friends.

Holiday Greetings!
FAA is kicking off the season with our 2019 Holiday Party. We meet at 7 pm on Tuesday, December 3. Please bring a refreshment to share, and if you wish to participate in our gift exchange, please bring a small seasonal item ($10 – $15), wrapped but with no names on it. We will have some fun with it for sure.
Please be sure to like our new beautiful Facebook page (the colorful one) and if you have already liked or followed our old page please unlike or unfollow that one so we can discard it. FB search Fairborn Art Association.
We will take a short winter break in January, but we will be back to our regular meeting schedule in February, 2020. Our speaker will be the ever-popular Yuki Hall and she will talk about her recent European painting trip and sketching. Meeting is Tuesday, February 4 at 7 pm.
Now that winter weather is upon us, please remember if Fairborn schools are closed due to weather, we will not meet that night. If weather worsens during the day, we will attempt to send an e-mail blast out to you. Of course, we want everyone to be safe, so if the meeting has not been officially cancelled but you are not comfortable driving, then please stay home.

Watercolor Painting for Art Journaling
Your Travels in Sketches and Paintings
with Misuk Goltz
May 4 – 6, 2020
Why Journaling? Your journal can become a sanctuary where you contemplate, reflect or resolve matters in your life; it’s just like keeping a diary. Or simply giving you the pleasure of recording the moments in your life you want to remember. If you are an artist, you already have the tools you need to create imaginative journal pages. Moreover, journaling will allow you to grow your skills as an observer, creator, and painter. For watercolor painters who want to bring their work to a different level, come and learn different painting methods and practice them with guidance and feedback from the instructor.
Workshop Agenda:
Introduction to Journaling
Brainstorm: “What do I want my journal to be?” Medium to practice sketching and painting? Keepsake? Diary? Travelogue?
Page Design Exercise: Play with different formats: horizontal, vertical, square or your own creation
Journaling Exercise: Demos on painting/sketching (people, landscapes, urban scenes, animals) showing methods and strategies to construct journal pages
Start your journal! Start your painting
Individual discussion (5 minutes for each participant) on each one’s progress
Informal showing of student journals to share ideas
Book Binding: Make your own journal book
This workshop will be at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery from 9:30-4 with an hour for lunch. The cost will be $200 member or $225 non-member, including a $40 nonrefundable deposit which will hold your place for the workshop. Because Misuk has so many followers, get your deposit in soon.
