Hello all,
And just like that, the weather has turned cool, the leaves are on the ground, and Halloween and Thanksgiving are upon us.
If you missed our October meeting, there was important information for all to be aware of.
- We have had to cash in a CD in order to meet our normal expenses (rent, phones, speakers, etc.) for the year. Without the Sweet Corn Festival, we lost $13,000 income. Our current dues do not begin to cover even our rent, so there was no choice. We are now operating at a deficit, and spending our assets. That is not a sustainable way to continue providing the wonderful things you have come to expect from FAA.
- Sue and Loren Red, and Lori Luckner have resigned their positions with FAA and the Sweet Corn Festival. No monetary amount could be put on the time and energy they have devoted to both organizations over the years. We need volunteers in place next month (November) if the Sweet Corn Festival can be held in 2021. Along with Warren Brown and a committee of volunteers, they have been the driving force behind the Sweet Corn Festival, and Sue has been FAA Treasurer for as long as I can remember. Please, please, please consider taking a leadership role in this festival that is so important to the Fairborn community and to FAA. Call Warren Brown and he can fill you in how YOU can help.
- Roger Browning has agreed to take over the Treasurer role, but can only commit for a year. We NEED someone to take over this critical role for our organization (and to work with Roger ahead of time). Please call Roger or me if you are willing to take on this role. I’m sure Sue Red would be happy to answer questions as well. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Because of the restrictions placed on us by the Covid-19 pandemic, we are unable to have our annual Holiday and Christmas party this year. Therefore, there will not be a meeting in December.
We had a successful Members’ Show in October. There were 75 entries, and if you were unable to get out to see the show you missed some absolutely compelling pieces of art. We are planning a spring show for May 2021, and crossing our fingers! Hopefully, photos of the prize-winning entries will be on our Facebook page and our Website soon.
Jim Gifford has taken on the role of Sunshine Chair from Deb Suter. If you know of a member who needs some love from FAA, please let Jim know and he will send a card.
Our November meeting is Tuesday, November 3. Our speaker is Tim Langenderfer, Artist-in-Residence and instructor at MOSA Academy of Art. He will be talking about and demonstrating drawing techniques. Please reserve your space by emailing or calling Debi Cosenza. Only 40 seats are available because of social distancing requirements. Meeting begins at 7 pm. Remember there are no refreshments provided, so if you need to bring something for yourself only you may do so, but are required to take your trash out with you.
We will have a special recognition of the service of Sue and Loren Red, and Lori Luckner at our November meeting as well.
Cheap Joe shared this quote attributed to Dan White. “To belong is perhaps the most important and yet least recognized need of the human soul.”

October 2020 Meeting
PHOTOS FROM BRUCE NEVILLE’S WORKSHOP … Submitted by James Gifford
Bruce Neville was our speaker and demo artist at our meeting on October 6, 2020. Bruce demonstrated his watercolor techniques resulting in a colorful city scene which took us by surprise. He started with abstract looking blocks of color, working all over the page, not concentrating on any one object, but working on all objects intermittedly. The finished painting brought all these objects together in a delightful painting. He also showed several of his other paintings. It was an enjoyable painting session, also including his wife, Nancy, who commented on both the painting process and their personal history with his painting life.

Bruce Neville’s workshop will be filled with information to help you process the painting, in developing your own style and adding that freshness to your work. Each day Bruce will start the subject demo and will demonstrate how he will approach the subject and show the processes he goes through. The loose style, the light process, where the values are critical to bring your eye into the focal point of the painting. Drawing and perspective will also be discussed, and he will provide some shortcuts to develop the painting. For additional information, please contact Connie Gifford at gifford.connie@gmail.com .
SWEETCORN FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS
The annual Fairborn Sweetcorn Festival is the revenue generator that sustains the Fairborn Art Association by paying for the gallery and associated expenses throughout the year and allows us to keep the dues at a reasonable level and provide the level of service that you expect.
Sue Red, Loren Red and Lori Luckner have retired from the Sweetcorn Festival which means we need some dedicated volunteers to take their places.
- One position manages the booth acquisition and associated duties.
- Another position manages the physical activities such as the restroom contract, field layout, tent rental, generator rental, and materials from storage such as chairs and tables and watermelon booth.
- Another position manages the website and works with booth selection and arrangement and orders parade handouts and signs for booth locations and other informational signs.
We have detailed instructions for these positions and as you can well imagine these positions are at the heart of the event so are critical to be filled and accomplished. There can be multiple volunteers for each of these positions as well.
If we cannot find volunteers for these positions by the end of November 2020 the event scheduled for August 21 and 22, 2021 will not occur!

Greetings,
Seems like months ago since I’ve seen many of you; wait, I guess it has been months. The last time we met was in March and we’ve had to cancel everything since then.
Unfortunately, September is more of the same. Since the Governor has not lifted his limit of 10 people at a gathering, we have had to cancel our September member meeting.
We are hoping to work out a way to still have our October meeting, Member Show (postponed from May), and workshop with Bruce Neville and those are on our Agenda for our September Board meeting. We will notify you all with an e-mail blast early in the month so you can plan for those activities.
Also on the agenda will be our finances. As you know, we rely heavily on the Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival for income, and since that didn’t happen that income is gone for this year. There were also expenses incurred before it was finally cancelled and so we need to deal with that as well. I expect to have some information to you at our (hopefully) October meeting. I feel we can “weather the storm” this year if we have our normal “other” income and dip into our savings, but we will not have any of our upgrades we have enjoyed in the past.
The most important item on the agenda is discussing the replacement of Sue Red, Treasurer, and Lori Luckner, Gallery Coordinator and Membership. Both have said they are resigning their positions and would like to be replaced as soon as possible. They are also both on the Sweet Corn Festival Committee, but that is separate from their Board positions. The Treasurer position is especially critical, and Sue is willing to work with her replacement for a couple months, but wants to be gone by January 1. Lori is willing to work with her replacement also. So please, FAA members, PLEASE step up to help us.
Please remember that when you do come to the FAA Gallery, you must wear a mask, practice social distancing, and wipe down and disinfect any surfaces you have come into contact with. If you bring food or drink (we won’t be supplying any at this time), you must take all your trash out with you so others will not be handling it. No, it isn’t fun, but we want to make sure we provide a safe and healthy environment for our members and guests.
Thank you to all our volunteers who have worked so hard to keep things going throughout this pandemic. Cheap Joe says “To be blessed and not know it is to miss one of life’s greatest treasures.” We members at FAA are truly blessed to be in the company of our artist friends and their beautiful creations. Hopefully we will again be able to gather together and enjoy each other’s company.
Billie Dickson,
President

Hello Everyone,
It’s been a rough two months for us all and I hope everyone has stayed healthy.
Congratulations to our 2020-21 Board members who were elected by mail this month. We will be meeting soon to make sure we continue to provide the good programs and shows we all have come to enjoy.
After two long months we have decided to reopen the Gallery on a limited basis. Our small groups (Board and Sweet Corn Festival meetings, Thursday and Friday paint groups) will be allowed to use the Gallery beginning June 1. There are restrictions on group size, social distancing, use of PPE, food consumption and cleaning. Those guidelines are posted elsewhere in this newsletter, and on signs throughout the Gallery.
The Landscape Show by the B-W Greenway will continue on the previously announced dates. Work will be accepted on Saturday, June 27 from 1–3 pm. You will not be allowed to enter the Gallery at that time. Your work will be accepted outside, or at the door, so please have your paperwork completed and your payment ready to hand over with your art. The brochure can be accessed by a link in this newsletter. If there is a line, please make sure you stand 6 feet away from each other, and then leave as soon as you have handed in your work. You will not all be able to stop in the “No Parking Zone”, so please make sure to leave it free of vehicles. Prize winners will be notified individually and you may pick up your awards at the Sunday, June 12 show date. THERE WILL NOT BE AN OPENING RECEPTION AND AWARDING OF PRIZES, in order to keep the number of people in the gallery at one time to 10 people or less. The show is open on June 12, 19, and 26 from 1–3 pm. Pick up your artwork on Sunday, July 26 from 3–4 pm. There will be a limit of 10 persons in the Gallery at any one time, and face masks are required. For more information, please contact Pat Higgins at pmhiggins32@gmail.com or Bob Coates at bobctwin@woh.rr.com.
As of the writing of this letter, May 18, 2020, the Sweet Corn Festival is still on. That is subject to change based on a number of factors, but please say yes to helping to put this on anyway. This Festival can’t happen without our volunteers! You will be notified asap if the status changes.
Please check our Facebook page regularly as updates will be posted as needed. Also, please LIKE our Facebook page. As always, email blasts will be used to notify of important information.
Thank you all for your patience and by showing you care for each other by wearing facemasks and keeping your hands clean, and by not visiting FAA if you have not been feeling well.
Just a reminder that our June 2 meeting (Social and People’s Choice Show) has been cancelled. Our next FAA meeting is September 1 at 7 pm.

SWEET CORN FESTIVAL—AUGUST 15 AND 16, 2020
The committee met on Tuesday, May 12, via Zoom, and plan on face-to-face meeting June 9 at 7 pm in the FAA Gallery. Our current plan is to continue with planning, and we will make the final decision by July 15. That decision will be guided by the Federal, State and local authorities. Additionally, if the Fairborn Music Club and Chess Club are advised by the School authorities to not participate, we will not go forward. Until those issues are clear we will move forward with planning – so if you would, please sign up for duties at the festival. We are asking our participants and vendors to practice social distancing and come prepared to wear a mask. We will ask the customers to practice social distancing and strongly suggest they wear a mask. Questions to me at 937-371-8531 or warren10@ix.netcom.com ,

Hello All,
While we have been staying at home, we have tried to carry on Fairborn Art Association’s business. We had our April Board meeting by ZOOM. It was a new experience for us, but it was productive with decisions made on how to conduct an Election of Officers without a meeting, how to get necessary volunteers for the Sweet Corn Festival, and how to make it possible for you to pay your dues without a show or meeting.
With that being said, you should have all received your envelope with three very important documents that must be returned to FAA. Your best bet is to complete all three and return them, along with your check for dues, to Fairborn Art Association, PO BOX 1231, Fairborn, OH 45324. Put it in the mail by Monday, May 4 to get it in by the ballot deadline.
We may be conducting our meetings and workshops with social distancing in mind in the future, but these are just hurdles to overcome, not permanent barriers. Stay positive, and stay well!

MEETINGS
As you know, our May meeting is cancelled because of the Governor’s orders to stay at home. The orders may be eased for us to hold our JUNE meeting, which is really a social. We install officers, announce the Sweet Corn Festival Queen and King, and have a People’s Choice one evening art show (you may bring 2 pieces, and you must be present). Prizes are awarded. Everyone brings a dish to share for refreshments. (THIS IS SUBJECT TO CANCELLATION PENDING ORDERS FROM THE GOVERNOR. You will be notified by e-mail and it will be posted on our Facebook page if that happens.)
SCHOLARSHIPS
We also normally announce our scholarship winners at that time, but unfortunately the letters announcing the scholarship arrived at the schools just about the time the Governor ordered them closed, so students were not notified, and no artwork was submitted. Hopefully we will be back on track with several submissions in 2021.
MEMBER SHOW
The Member Show which was cancelled for May has been rescheduled for October. Connie Gifford and Carol Edsall will have the prospectus ready to put on the website as soon as everything is finalized.
WORKSHOPS
The Bruce Neville workshop for October is still on and you may register now. Please contact Pat Dunker for details. The registration form will be on our website soon.
The Misuk Goltz workshop which was scheduled for May has been rescheduled for May 2021. Please contact Pat Dunker for details.

Sue Brezine fell and broke a hip. She has had surgery and is in rehab at Kingston of Miamisburg, 1120 Dunaway Street, Miamisburg, OH 45342. She will be there most likely until April 22. She sure could use some cheering up since no visitors are allowed at this time of the Coronavirus. Her regular cell phone is on the fritz but she can receive calls at 937-500-5284.
