 Happy Spring Everyone,

There is something about the springtime burst of color in SW Ohio that seems to lighten everyone’s mood. There are certainly beautiful landscapes to inspire the artist in all of us. Be sure to check out the site for inspiration for the Landscapes 2019 show to benefit the B-W Greenway Community Land Trust. It is the Garland Wetland Reserve, and is located at 1271 Commerce Center Blvd. in Fairborn. That is at the northern end of Commerce Center Blvd. near the intersection with Garland Ave. Entries are delivered to our FAA Gallery on Saturday, June 29 from 1 – 4, so it’s time to get those beautiful pieces of art started. Pick up a prospectus at the Gallery.

We will have Election of our Officers for 2019-2020 at our May meeting. The slate presented by the Nominating Committee is listed in this newsletter.

Our May meeting, on May 7, will have Soon Y. Warren demonstrating her watercolors and we will announce the winners for our May Members’ Spring Fine Arts Show. Please bring your friends and families to see the show on Sundays, May 5, 12, and 19 from 1 to 4 pm. Ms. Warren will be teaching a workshop from May 4 through May 9, so please contact Pat Dunker at [email protected] ASAP if you want to be a part of that.

MAY 2019 SPEAKER—SOON Y. WARREN

At the May 7, 2019, 7:00 pm, Fairborn Art Association (FAA) meeting, members will enjoy an artistic demonstration by well-known artist, Soon Y. Warren. The meeting is open to the public. Ms.Warren will also conduct a watercolor workshop at FAA from May 6-9, 2019.

Soon Y. Warren is a full time artist and teacher. She has an Associate Degree in Commercial Art from Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia. Ms.Warren has had numerous exhibitions, earned numerous awards, and has published two books. She is a signature member of National Watercolor Society (NWS); American Watercolor Society (AWS); Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA); Southern Watercolor Artist (SW/LM); Texas Watercolor Society, Purple Sage Brush (TWS); Honor Society of Watercolor USA; and Rocky Mountain Watermedia; Society of Watercolor Artist (SWA).

Ms.Warren’s favorite subjects are those found in nature: people, an animal, trees, a tangerine, pear, oriental poppy, iris, or something of intrigue at the moment. She is known for her spectacular renderings of everyday objects. She likes subjects that are pretty and make her happy. Ms.Warren always looks for interesting compositions created by natural form or light and often uses subject matter from still-life scenes. Flowers from her gardens often become models for paintings. She says, “I’m inspired by the beauty and complexity of nature and our surroundings. I try to paint the essence of subjects and my sincere feeling for nature.”

We still have openings for Soon Y. Warren’s watercolor workshop, May 6–9 and would welcome any interested people to get in touch with Pat Dunker 937-271-4798 or 937-562-3014 to enroll. Workshop cost for 4 days is $250 for members and $285 for nonmembers, both of which include a $40 non-refundable deposit. The subject matter in the workshop (as voted on by attendees) will be (1) flowers in a crystal vase and (2) a kitten. A materials list for this workshop is available on our website at www.fairbornart.org.

 2019 MEMBERS’ SPRING FINE ART SHOW

FAA Spring Show paintings will be accepted on Tuesday, April 30, from noon to 5 pm. The show opens on Sunday, May 5, 2019. Prizes awarded on Tuesday, May 7 at the FAA meeting. Please bring your art ready to hang, and we do not accept saw tooth hangers or ring hangers. The prospectus has all the information needed to prepare your art for the show. A prospectus for this show is available in our Gallery or on our website at www.fairbornart.org.

Registration:  Tuesday, April 30 from Noon to 5 pm

Show Opening: May 5, 2019 from 1:00 pm till 4:00 pm

Prizes Awarded:  Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 7 pm at our May meeting

Gallery Hours:  Sundays, May 5, 12, and 19 from 1 pm to 4 pm

Pick Up:  Sunday, May 19 from 4 to 6 pm

If you signed up to sit with the FAA gallery, please bring light snacks. We will assign one person in your group to have access to the gallery so you can get in and lock up when you leave. Please check with us when you register your art to make sure who will have gallery access. Light snacks could be cookies or cheese & crackers, or chips & salsa, and a punch or lemonade or something similar. Feel free to bring your artwork to work on while you are there.

Please invite your friends and family to come see the show, and hopefully find a piece of art they would like to hang in their home or office. Remember to share this information with your friends on Social Media such as Facebook.

MEMBERSHIP DUES RENEWAL

Everyone should have received their Membership Dues Notice in the mail. Please bring your dues with the renewal form to either the May or June meeting or mail them to: FAA, PO Box 1231, Fairborn, OH 45324. The deadline for renewal is June 4th. If you did not receive a notice in the mail, there will be some available at the Gallery or you can contact Lori Luckner at [email protected]. SWEET CORN FESTIVAL

Our Sweet Corn Festival is only about 3-1/2 months away. As you all know this is our major fund raiser for the FAA. We run on volunteers so we need you to volunteer some time August 15, 16, 17, or 18. We will need help on Thursday the 15 laying out the park; manning the gate and helping vendors find their spot on Friday the 16; the watermelon booth, information booth, and entry gate on Saturday and Sunday 17 & 18. So please sign up on the sheets at the May and June meeting. If you can’t make those meetings, let us know at the FAA number and we can get you on one of the tasks. Shifts usually run 3 to 4 hours; we can work around your schedule. Thanks in advance for your help on this important event.

 FROM THE GREENE COUNTY COUNCIL ON AGING

Thank you to those who came out to the Senior Artisan Show and to the 45 artisans who shared their creations. The show included 81 pieces, 9 of which sold. We asked guests to choose their favorite pieces, and three top vote getters were The Wren by Dorleen Hilbig, A Feathered Beauty by Judy Ireton, and My Soul Flies on the Wings of a Dove by BJ Michaelis. Our thanks to our friends at the Fairborn Art Association and we look forward to another beautiful show in 2020.

FAA LOGO CONTEST

The Fairborn Art Association was established years ago to join a community of artists together to enjoy many art forms. What is the essence of art? Almost every form of art has COLOR! The original logo for our association is a paintbrush with a splash but it is in black and white. I think that we should update the logo to make it colorful and reflect the association today. The Board has been trying very hard to make our association appear more modern.  We would like to hold a contest to design a new colorful logo. Everyone is encouraged to create a new logo. We can display the designs during the People’s Choice Show. We can all vote to choose the logo we like the best. EXPERIENCE WATERCOLOR & YUPO WITH CONNIE GIFFORD

Connie Gifford will be offering a workshop on May 22, 2019, from 9:30 am until 1:30 pm at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery. Have you ever tried to watercolor on yupo paper, only to become frustrated and dismayed because you didn’t have  control of your painting? Yupo tends to become the boss with watercolor; however, I can help you with understanding how to take charge, where you manage and control what and how the paint flows. If I have your attention now, why not plan on attending my workshop with yupo? I will share the many tips, tricks and techniques that I have learned over the past few years of working with watercolor and yupo. Class space is limited, so please sign up as soon as possible. I will supply you with a 9×12″ sheet of Yupo paper and bring your watercolors and normal supplies (water container, brushes, paper towels, pencil, liquid frisket) and anything you have that will make textures. Registration instructions: The cost of the workshop is $50 and will be held at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery located  in the rear of the Fairborn Senior Apartment Building, 221 North Central Avenue, Fairborn, Ohio. YUKI  HALL WORKSHOPS

Outdoor Sketching Workshops

Yuki Hall will be teaching outdoor sketching workshops “Fun with outdoor sketching” from May 21–May 23, 2019 (Session 1) and June 11–June 13, 2019 (Session 2).  These are two independent sessions and students can register for either one or both. We will be sketching at Cox Arboretum, Carriage Hill Farm as well as The Greene. In this workshop, students will learn about the variety of sketching supplies available, how to select and simplify a complex subject by extracting the most important feature of the subject while leaving unnecessary details out. You will also learn how to steer away from illustrative ‘coloring-in’ sketching style, but to paint in painterly fashion and add finesse to your sketching. We will be sketching mainly with watercolor, with additional use of both permanent and water-soluble pens. 3-Day Indoor Watercolor Workshop

Yuki will also offer a 3-day indoor workshop, “Watercolor – Painting Loosely” at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery from June 24 to June 26, 2019. In this workshop, students will learn how to break away from coloring-in painting style and start painting watercolor with confident brush strokes and expressive edge qualities for more spontaneous and impressionistic appearance. In addition, effective use of eloquent calligraphy will be discussed. This workshop is designed to help students gain insight in discovering the true quality of watercolor so that he/she can create paintings with maximum visual and emotional impact. The cost for this workshop is $140.  For more information or/and to register, contact Yuki at (937) 679-2464, [email protected].

CLARICE MOORE EXHIBITIONS

Clarice Moore is exhibiting at Central State Dayton Campus at 840 Germantown Street, from April 1–May 31, 2019. Clarice also will have artwork on display at 3rd Perk Coffeehouse, 46 W. Fifth Street, April 6–June 13, 2019, as part of the Historic African American Churches exhibition, which has a lovely calendar featuring all the artists for sale.  Evvie Moore and Clarice Moore will be exhibited at Oakwood Historical Society’s fundraiser May 18, 2019, 4:00–-7:00 pm, 1947 Far Hills Avenue.

LIBBY RUDOLF AT THE YELLOW SPRINGS SENIOR CENTER

Monday Morning Artist group, led by Libby in Yellow Springs will have an exhibit ‘Art From the Heart’ at the YS Senior Center from May 15 thru July 1.  The Senior Center is open M-F, 9-4 usually.  Several other FAA people are part of the group, Theresa Mayer, Toni Larrichiuta, Marty Davenport, and others. Art from the Heart Artist Reception (food/drink/art friends) Friday, May 17 from 4:30-7:30.    Please come visit!

Libby Rudolf and Diana Hoke will host a workshop in the Great room, “Painting People in Watercolor” on Monday, May 20, 3:00-4:30. The cost is $15 and people should call the Senior Center at 767-5751 to sign up.  We will give tips and tricks of painting people…bring good photos. All supplies will be provided but people may bring their own if they prefer. Maximum of 15 people.

 LANDSCAPES 2019 JURIED ART COMPETITION  UPDATE

The Landscapes 2019 juried art competition is underway. The juried competition’s Opening Reception will be held on Sunday, July 14, from 2 to 4 pm; with prizes awarded at 3 pm.  Please note this is a corrected date from previous notices. The gallery will also be open on July 21 and 28 from 2 to 4 pm for the community to enjoy.

Each year since 2010, B-W Greenway Community Land Trust and the Fairborn Art Association have sponsored the art competition to heighten the community’s awareness of local greenspaces and the need to preserve them. The Landscapes 2019 location is the Garland Wetland Reserve, a City of Fairborn Park located at 1271 Commerce Center Blvd., Fairborn; at the intersection of Commerce Center Blvd and Garland Avenue.

The juried competition is open to all artists 16 years and older, living within 200 miles of Fairborn, OH. Work may be oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, print, drawing, mixed media, photography, or 3D hanging art less than 10 lbs. in weight. Size many not exceed 30 x 40 inches.  A non-refundable entry fee of $20 for a total of 3 works must accompany the entry form. All entries will be received at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery, 221 North Central Avenue, Fairborn, OH (in the rear of the building) on Saturday, June 29, 2019, during the hours of 1-4 pm. REMINDERS

The following people signed up to bring refreshments to our May meeting. Pat Dunker, Maggie Vance, Evvie Moore, Ed Vance, Shirley Harbaugh, Carol Edsall, Kenny Moore, Linda Perry, Shirlee Bauer, Sue Seitz, Jada Keplinger, Cass Barth. This will be a well attended meeting with the Workshop Artist giving the demo and we usually have 60 or more in attendance, so please plan accordingly. Additional volunteers are welcome. Your contribution does not have to be a chef’s perfection or even a cooked casserole. Finger foods and desserts are perfectly acceptable.

APRIL 2019 NEWSLETTER

 Hello all,

Just like that, April is upon us. I hope you are putting the finishing touches on your art work for our Member Show in May! The prospectus for the show is on our website, so you will be able to just click the link elsewhere in our newsletter. Our show chairs Connie Gifford and Maggie Vance have everything in place to get the show up and ready to open on Sunday, May 5. Awards will be presented at our meeting on Tuesday, May 7.

All members should be receiving a Member Information Sheet by snail mail any time now. It includes a reminder to pay your dues (payable by June 1, 2019). You may mail them in, pay them when you bring your artwork for the show, or pay them at the May meeting. Please include the Information Sheet with your dues–it lets us verify your current information (very important!) and gives you the opportunity to let us know your interests. Your interests are important as we are deciding on speakers for our meetings and for contacting potential volunteers for our various events. If you did not receive your letter it probably is because we do not have correct information for you, so be sure to pick one up from the desk when you come to the Gallery, or contact Lori Luckner to update your information and receive one in the mail.

We will be taking nominations for our Officers (President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and Treasurer) in April, and will vote in May. If being a leader at Fairborn Art has ever interested you, please let me know and I will forward your name to our Nominating Committee. I’m sure some of our longtime officers would love to be training new people to take over their positions.

Our April speaker is Mike Elsass, a very popular local artist who will talk about “Brush Before Brain.” He paints abstract paintings in acrylic, and is a very entertaining speaker. Meeting is Tuesday, May 7 at 7 pm.  Board meets at 6 pm.

APRIL SPEAKER—MIKE ELSASS

At the April FAA meeting, members will enjoy an artistic demonstration by Dayton artist, Mike Elsass. Instead of canvas or paper, Elsass’ medium is weathered steel. About 19 years ago he left the business world, intent on becoming a writer, and took a detour into art after being inspired by Dayton Artist Roger Sayre.

On Elsass’ web site, his art is described: “Mike is fascinated by the medium of weathered steel. Inspired to constantly experiment, Mike’s artistic vision yields contemporary abstracts inspired by his vision of nature and time, perfection and imperfection, joy and suffering an aspects of the human condition, mixed with the beauty of nature.”

Elsass works out of the artist cooperative on Front Street on Dayton’s near east side. Again the web site describes the venue: “Inspired by the potential for color against industry, Mike Elsass pioneered the untapped frontier of the buildings, creating an artistic urban renaissance in Dayton.”

It is exciting to enter the old warehouse building into Elsass’ vast workroom and observe the old steel, the rusted, bent, tangled old metal, sitting around the room. But then your attention turns to the brilliant color on the walls and work tables, yes, an artistic renaissance, of old junk, and be visually thrilled and in awe at the artistic pieces he created.

But Elsass isn’t just an artist, he’s also a force to improve the greater Dayton community. He works with nonprofit groups using his art as a therapy medium, and he supports missions efforts throughout the greater Dayton community.

Members will not only enjoy his work but his outgoing and entertaining personality and presentation.

ROSE SCHULTZ EXHIBIT

Rose Schultz, an FAA member, is showing her artwork in the Centerville Art Gallery during the month of April. Rose works in watercolor, pastels, and mixed media using rice paper collage. About twenty pieces representing her work in these media will be on display. The Art Gallery is located in the lobby of the Centerville Police Headquarters at 155 W Spring Valley Road. The Gallery is staffed 24-hours per day and artwork may be viewed free of charge at any time. Rose invites all FAA members to see the show in April.

YUKI  HALL ACCEPTED TO TWSA

Yuki Hall’s painting “Charleston Rain” was accepted into the 2019 Transparent Watercolor Society of America National Exhibition. This is her 3rd time being accepted by TWSA. She will be traveling to Kenosha, WI this summer to receive her signature membership to the organization. Congratulations to Yuki.

In this workshop, students will learn about the variety of sketching supplies available, how to select and simplify a complex subject by extracting the most important feature of the subject while leaving unnecessary details out. You will also learn how to steer away from illustrative ‘coloring-in’ sketching style, but to paint in painterly fashion and add finesse to your sketching. We will be sketching mainly with watercolor, with additional use of both permanent and water-soluble pens. 3-Day Indoor Watercolor Workshop

Yuki will also offer a 3-day indoor workshop, “Watercolor – Painting Loosely” at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery from June 24 to June 26, 2019. In this workshop, students will learn how to break away from coloring-in painting style and start painting watercolor with confident brush strokes and expressive edge qualities for more spontaneous and impressionistic appearance. In addition, effective use of eloquent calligraphy will be discussed. This workshop is designed to help students gain insight in discovering the true quality of watercolor so that he/she can create paintings with maximum visual and emotional impact. The cost for this workshop is $140.  For more information or/and to register, contact Yuki at (937) 679-2464, [email protected].

LANDSCAPES 2019 JURIED ART COMPETITION  UPDATE

The Landscapes 2019 juried art competition is underway. The juried competition’s Opening Reception will be held on Sunday, July 14, from 2 to 4 pm; with prizes awarded at 3 pm.  Please note this is a corrected date from previous notices. The gallery will also be open on July 21 and 28 from 2 to 4 pm for the community to enjoy.

Each year since 2010, B-W Greenway Community Land Trust and the Fairborn Art Association have sponsored the art competition to heighten the community’s awareness of local greenspaces and the need to preserve them. The Landscapes 2019 location is the Garland Wetland Reserve, a City of Fairborn Park located at 1271 Commerce Center Blvd., Fairborn; at the intersection of Commerce Center Blvd and Garland Avenue.

The juried competition is open to all artists 16 years and older, living within 200 miles of Fairborn, OH. Work may be oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, print, drawing, mixed media, photography, or 3D hanging art less than 10 lbs. in weight. Size many not exceed 30 x 40 inches.  A non-refundable entry fee of $20 for a total of 3 works must accompany the entry form. All entries will be received at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery, 221 North Central Avenue, Fairborn, OH (in the rear of the building) on Saturday, June 29, 2019, during the hours of 1-4 pm. BAD WEATHER MEETING CANCELLATION

We will follow recommendations of the media weather reports. When they say travel would be dangerous, we will cancel our scheduled meeting. The Board will communicate with each other by phone and you will be notified by email as soon as a decision is reached. Be sure to check your email before starting out if the weather is bad. If you do not have email access, please call one of the Board members or a member you know who has email access. In the event we must cancel a meeting, the meeting will be held the following Tuesday at 7 pm.

MARCH 2019 SPEAKER—BRUCE NEVILLE

The Fairborn Art Association (FAA) welcomes Cincinnati-based watercolor artist, Bruce Neville, March 5, 2019, at 7:00 pm. Neville said, “Watercolor has become a passion and very much a part of my life. First I have to be inspired. It helps that I often have my pad and pencils with me in my daily travels. With my architectural background, the fundamental visual skill of drawing is a beginning for my paintings. I also express a great deal of emotion to create the mood.”

Over the years Bruce has taught many classes and also presents workshops.  His work is currently represented in Ohio and other states.  He recently won an award from the Ohio Watercolor Society for his painting “Hill Street in Mt. Adams.” Mary Whyte, internationally recognized artist, selected “Hill Street”and said “Beautiful brushwork that dances between form and descriptive line. The artist’s vigorous depiction of light and shadows all add up to a lively and very fresh work.”

He also won The Sarah and John Lechletter Best of Show Award for “Victorian Shadows” watercolor at the 117th Annual Exhibit at the Richmond Art Museum, Richmond, IN.

Neville is a featured artist in the book, Skies & Clouds: The Watercolor Techniques Of 23 International Artists, by Larry Charles (Editor), Terri Dodd (Editor). Neville said, “As a featured artist in this book, I discussed the thought process as applied to putting feeling into a beach scene.”

He was raised near Providence, Rhode Island. Neville said, “I witnessed people of everyday life and the wonderful neighborhoods of New England. I lived and schooled in Boston and then took the leap to study architecture at the University of Cincinnati. (Took) many courses in art education at UC and after design for 40 years I made the decision to take on my preference to paint in watercolor on a full-time basis. Deep down I always wanted to be a painter. After closing down my firm, I then got serious about being a painter.”

SOON Y. WARREN WORKSHOP

The Fairborn Art Association will present the Soon Y. Warren Workshop May 6-9, 2019, 9:30-4:00 pm, located in their Gallery in the rear of the Fairborn Senior Apartment Building, 221 N Central Ave. Fairborn, Oh 45434. (Please note the change in dates from May 6-10 to May 6-9. This is a 4-day workshop.) Soon Y. Warren is a full time artist and teacher. She has an Associate degree in commercial art from Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia. Soon Y. has had numerous exhibitions, earned numerous awards, and has published two books. She is a signature member of National Watercolor Society (NWS); American Watercolor Society (AWS); Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA); Southern Watercolor Artist (SW/LM); Texas Watercolor Society, Purple Sage Brush (TWS); Honor Society of Watercolor USA; Rocky Mountain Watermedia; Society of Watercolor Artist (SWA).

Soon’s favorite subjects are those found in nature: people, an animal, trees, a tangerine, pear, oriental poppy, iris or something of intrigue at the moment. She is known for her spectacular renderings of everyday objects. Soon likes subjects that are pretty and make her happy. She always looks for interesting compositions created by natural form or light and often uses subject matter from still lifes. Flowers from her gardens often become models for paintings. She says that, “I’m inspired by the beauty and complexity of nature and our surroundings. I try to paint the essence of subjects and my sincere feeling for nature.”

A registration form is available in our Gallery or on our website at www.fairbornart.org. PAINTING  UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN
Yuki Hall & Diana Marra will be conducting a magical painting and touring adventure in Tuscany, Italy from September 27 to October 4, 2019.  Tucked away in a corner of Tuscany, Trequanda is in the southeast of Siena.  Here you will see undulating terrain covered in vineyards, olive groves and wheat fields – unimaginable landscape you will never want to leave. We will be staying in a beautiful 16th-century renovated family-owned farmhouse with its history and winery which produces excellent Tuscan wines.  The farm house is perched 1,300 feet above sea level and has a spectacular view.  There, in the Tuscan countryside and historic architecture, we will be painting and sketching in watercolor as well as learning Chinese brush painting.  You will also be enjoying authentic Tuscan cuisine prepared with care and excellent fresh ingredients, accompanied by local wine.   After a day of painting, you can swim and relax in a swimming pool with breathtaking views.  The farmhouse is also surrounded by walking trails and a tennis court.  We will also tour the vineyards and winery with an expert vintner and then sit down to wine tasting with a delicious three–course lunch.  Our week in Tuscany will include fantastic excursions to Florence, Siena, San Gimignano and Montalcino, all by private transportations.  For more information and/or questions, please contact Yuki Hall at (937) 679-2464, [email protected]. 2019 ART ON THE BEACH

The Logan County Art League is sponsoring the12th annual Art on the Beach held at Oldfield Beach at Indian Lake, Lakeview, Ohio on June 22 and 23,^, 2019.  We are searching for art vendors and fine craftsmen. Greetings Everyone,

It’s a busy month for all, so be sure to begin with our FAA Very Merry Happy Holiday Party on Tuesday, December 4. Festivities begin at 7 pm. Please bring a small wrapped gift (less than $10) if you want to play Naughty Santa, and everyone bring some kind of refreshment to share with our friends. The Holiday Bazaar sneak peek begins at 5:30, so come early to shop. The Bazaar opens to the public on Saturday and Sunday, December 8 and 9, so tell your friends and co-workers about the original art and craft work that will be available. No meeting in January, but we begin 2019 on February 5 with Ron Rollins speaking about Acrylic in Action. He paints large abstract acrylics that just dance around the painting. Meeting starts at 7 pm, Board Meeting starts at 6 pm.

Hoping all of you have very peaceful and joyful holidays, be it Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or so many other celebrations at this time of year. Peace and prosperity to all in the New Year!

FAA HOLIDAY ARTS & CRAFT BAZAAR

FAA Holiday Arts & Craft Bazaar will be back this year! FAA members will have the opportunity to have their artwork and handicrafts displayed in the Gallery for sale on Dec. 8 (Sat.) from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm; and Dec. 9 (Sun.) from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm; and optional Dec. 4 (Tue.) from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, right before FAA Christmas party. Items that can be sold at the Bazaar will include paintings, photography, woodwork items, jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, fiber art, etc. No commercially made items or art supplies will be allowed to be sold.  If you wish to participate in the Bazaar, you will need to purchase a table space and/or wall space to display your art. You will be responsible to tend your own table and make sales. It is highly recommended that you be present at your table during the entire sale period. However, if it is not possible, you can arrange for an alternative person to take care of the sales or make a prior arrangement with other artists participating in the bazaar. Neither FAA nor the Bazaar organizers (Carol Edsall and Barb Olekas) will be responsible for your sales if no one is at your station. If you are only showing 2-D art on the wall and do not have a table, you are not required to be present in the Gallery. Instead, you can leave your phone number on the title cards of your paintings so that the potential buyer can contact you to arrange the sale. No inventory sheets are necessary. You set up your own station and you make your own sales! Pre-registration is necessary to participate in this Bazaar. Please refer to the Registration Form for more details about how to participate. Just a reminder for those artists selling their work at the Christmas Art & Craft bazaar:

Set up for the Dec. 4 meeting is prior to the meeting at 3:00 to 5:00 pm

Set up for the bazaar open to the public is the prior Fri., Dec. 7  from 2:00 to 4:00 pm or the first day of the bazaar Sat., Dec. 8 from 8:00 to 9:45

Bazaar open to the public times are Sat., Dec. 8, from 10:00 to 4:00 pm and Sun., Dec. 9 from 12 noon to 4:00 pm.  Anyone showing their work on a table must be present the entire time to cover their table.  Any setup decoration, tablecloth to be supplied by participant, no electric permitted.  (Any extra work, boxes should fit under table, out of aisles for safety.). Hanging wall space only work does not need you to be present, however requires a label, with your name, media, name of work, and price.

FAA 2018 HOLIDAY WORKSHOPS WITH DIANA MARRA

Diana Marra will be conducting two Asian Painting workshops in our Gallery during the month of December.

Give JOY – Get JOY:  Asian Painting BAMBOO Gift Set, Mon. Dec. 10, 2018, 10-3. Learn the special gradated and precise brushstrokes used to create BAMBOO paintings using the concept of Papa Mama Baby.  You will paint 5 paintings size 5” x 7” in traditional “Sumi-e style” with black Sumi ink on rice paper, then add watercolor, then paint 3 pearlescent versions on white, kraft, and black papers.  Choose the one you want to give as a gift, and you will receive a mat and sleeve to make a nice, ready-to-frame presentation.  And paint a coordinated bookmark,  notecard, and gift tag to match, making one complete set for holiday giving. All materials included.  Written and visual instructions also included so that you can continue learning this artform at home. Asian Painting is something I have practiced for the past 20 years and received my Teacher Certification training last year (one of 12 certified teachers in the US). I have studied Asian painting at the Art Academy in Cincinnati, with local artist Karl Feng, with Lian Zhen, with Cheng Khee Chee, and with Ning Yeh from Oriental Art Supply at his studio in Huntington Beach, in Chicago, and in China. I have been juried in and exhibited nationally with the Sumi-e Society of America. This artform brings me peace and continues to teach me new ways to paint. I would love to share this experience with you, just in time for the holidays.

2018 HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE

The 1854 Daniel Hertzler House Museum of the Clark County Park District will hold its annual Holiday Open House on Sunday, December 2 from  l-3 pm. This year we are featuring “Mouse’s First Christmas” a charming story by Lauren Thompson about a little mouse discovering all those special things that speak Christmas. Guests may read the simple story and try to find all the decorations that ‘mouse’ first saw.  Compute the correct number and win a prize. The Open House also features the beautiful harp music of Leslie Arendt and refreshments of seven sweets and seven savories that follow German tradition.  The event is free, but donations are always appreciated.     …Submitted by Barb Arnold

ART AT THE ARNOLD

Celebrating 10 Years, the 2019 Art At The Arnold competition will be held March 1 – March 3 which takes place at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, OH.

Art at the Arnold is three-days of drawing, painting, sculpting, and other creative artistic media. Artists use athletes and models as subjects with the Arnold Sports Festival as a backdrop. Friday, the first day, artists work with models. Saturday’s all day work session the artists work from subjects found among the many events and competitions at the festival. Judging, Awards ceremony and Art Show follow on Sunday. All events are located in the North Atrium of the Greater Columbus Convention Center in downtown Columbus. Space is limited to 50 juried artists who work in front of thousands of spectators.

Co-chairs of Art at the Arnold are Pertain Gillespie and Kevin Buckland who say Art at the Arnold is fun and educational for both spectators and artists.

Hello Friends,

This month marks my favorite holiday of the year – Thanksgiving. It is a day to celebrate being grateful for all the good things in your life, to share a meal with family and friends, and to enjoy the calm before the mad rush of the upcoming holidays.

Carol Edsall and Barb Olekas have agreed to co-chair our annual Holiday Bazaar. The event will be on December 8 and 9 and they will be signing up people who want to sell their items this month. Please be sure to sign up early for a table. There will be a sneak preview at our Holiday Party/meeting on Tuesday, December 4, so plan to come early to shop before the public opening on the weekend.

Our November speaker is Jacqueline Sullivan. Her subject is “A Dozen Ways to Start an Abstract.” It sounds like we are in for a very exciting demo.

NOVEMBER SPEAKER—JACQUELINE SULLIVAN

Mixed–media artist, Ms. Jacqueline Sullivan is the featured speaker for our meeting on Tuesday, November 6, 2018,  at 7 pm. The public is invited to attend and watch as Jacqueline demonstrates her creative art techniques. Her mixed media, calligraphic and acrylic works have been shown in galleries and top juried art fairs nationwide. She pursues an element of adventure and discovery in her art seeking the truly unique results. In her work, she experiments with all types of textures, paints and materials. In addition to her studio practice, Jacqueline has been a teaching artist for 30 years. She loves teaching and inspiring creativity in others. She has taught workshops and lectured for top art retreats and art centers as well as art and calligraphy guilds throughout the United States and Canada. She has also served as faculty for several International Calligraphy Conferences. Jacqueline was selected by The Golden Paint Company in 2013 to become certified as a GOLDEN Artist Educator. She attended a national training program hosted by GOLDEN in New Orleans. Jacqueline has published technique articles in Somerset Studio, Cloth Paper Scissors, Pages, and Astarte’s Mega-Zine. She has been profiled in many Calligraphic Journals and was honored as the cover artist in the Winter 2012 issue of “Alphabet,” the Journal for The Friends of Calligraphy in San Francisco. Jacqueline has a best-selling DVD – Acrylics: Textures, Layers, and Metallics – published by Creative Catalyst Productions and has self-produced a series of three video art workshops on her most-requested studio techniques.

Sullivan’s Artist Statement: “I have been a teaching artist for 30 years and I love to teach! Seeing the joy in a student’s face when they create something that pleases them brings me joy. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given to inspire others to be creative. Mixed media, acrylic paints, calligraphy, bookbinding, and fiber arts – I have loved them all since I first discovered each medium. I have a degree in graphic design and worked for many years as a publication, marketing and advertising designer as a way to make a living but my passion has always been with color and paint, no matter what the surface.  Personal artistic development has been a lifeline as I work my way through the challenges life has brought. My mixed media, book art, calligraphic and acrylic work has been shown in galleries and top juried art fairs nationwide. I believe that asking “what if?” and keeping a spirit of adventure and discovery is important as I follow my creative path and attempt to make something original. YUKI HALL MINI WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP

Yuki Hall will be hosting a “Holiday Mini Watercolor Painting Workshop” at FAA gallery on November 12 and  14 from 9:30 to 3:30.  Each 1-day workshop is independent and students will be painting different scenes. This is a casual and fun-filled “Make them – Take them home” type workshop that students of all levels can enjoy.  We will be making 2 framed mini watercolor paintings with a Holiday theme. We will also be painting and making Christmas cards which can be framed later in 5X7 frame if so wished. These adorable mini paintings make wonderful one-of-a-kind Holiday gifts for our special friends and family members. While having fun, students will learn many important watercolor painting concepts and techniques which can later be applied to their larger paintings. Each session is independent and we will be painting with different scenes. Students can attend just 1 session or both sessions. The cost for this workshop is $50 for 1 session and $90 if you register for both sessions. The workshop fee includes two (four if you register for both sessions) miniature 3×3 frames with matting, card making supplies and watercolor paper. To register, please send the payment and the registration form (available in the Gallery and is attached)  to Yuki Hall, 4136 Fox Fern Ct. FAA HOLIDAY ARTS & CRAFT BAZAAR

FAA Holiday Arts & Craft Bazaar will be back this year! FAA members will have the opportunity to have their artwork and handicrafts displayed in the Gallery for sale on Dec. 8 (Sat.) from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm; and Dec. 9 (Sun.) from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm; and optional Dec. 4 (Tue.) from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, right before FAA Christmas party. Items that can be sold at the Bazaar will include paintings, photography, woodwork items, jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, fiber art, etc. No commercially made items or art supplies will be allowed to be sold.  If you wish to participate in the Bazaar, you will need to purchase a table space and/or wall space to display your art. You will be responsible to tend your own table and make sales. It is highly recommended that you be present at your table during the entire sale period. However, if it is not possible, you can arrange for an alternative person to take care of the sales or make a prior arrangement with other artists participating in the bazaar. Neither FAA nor the Bazaar organizers (Carol Edsall and Barb Olekas) will be responsible for your sales if no one is at your station. If you are only showing 2-D art on the wall and do not have a table, you are not required to be present in the Gallery. Instead, you can leave your phone number on the title cards of your paintings so that the potential buyer can contact you to arrange the sale. No inventory sheets are necessary. You set up your own station and you make your own sales! Pre-registration is necessary to participate in this Bazaar. Please refer to the Registration Form for more details about how to participate. RUTH LAPP ART IN EXHIBIT

I wanted to share I have 2 pastels in the Ohio Pastel Artist League juried show Quest for the Best.
The show is at Quest Conference Center, 8405 Pulsar Place, Columbus, OH (Near Polaris) and runs from October 1 – November 29, 2018.  Hours of operation: 7 am to 5 pm, Monday-Friday.

Hello Everyone,

There are so many things going on in the Dayton area art world that it is hard to keep up. The Middletown Show and the Western Ohio Watercolor Society Show in Troy are getting ready to open. The Ohio Watercolor Society Show in Pepper Pike and the Piqua Art Show are ready to view. FAA has artists involved in all of these wonderful shows, as well as in festivals throughout the area. October is one of the most beautiful months to find inspiration, so get outside and take photos, or paint, or just breathe in the crisp autumn air. We look forward to viewing your beautiful work.

We have a workshop by nationally known instructor and artist Nita Leland the first week in October that has space available. Flyers are available on our website, fairbornart.org or in the Gallery. See you at our meeting on October 2 at 7 pm. The Board will meet at 6 pm.

OCTOBER SPEAKER—NITA LELAND

Nita is our resident expert on color. She will be conducting her Color Clinic Workshop October 2 through 4 in our Gallery and will be the speaker at our meeting on October 2. Nita is skilled at getting beginners started, de-mystifying color theory and inspiring creativity and self-confidence in her students at all skill levels.

OCTOBER 2018 WORKSHOP WITH NITA LELAND

The Nita Leland workshop is quickly approaching and we still have room for 4-5 more students. Everyone I know who has taken her class says this is a “must” for all artists. You learn so much about color, mixing color, using different colors together and much more. Final payment of the $200 for members or $235 for non-members is due no later than September 29.

Nita Leland will present “Color Clinic” at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery on October 2, 3, and 4, 2018, from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. Nita helps watercolor artists understand all about paint and how colors work in mixtures, how to create vibrant color expression using triads to enhance your artwork, and how to use the seven contrasts of color to improve your artwork. You will learn about paint characteristics, organizing your palette and more. There will be mini-demos and class critiques throughout the day with lots of painting and individual attention. Finished artwork will also be critiqued in class upon request. Nita began her art career in watercolor and has been teaching classes and workshops in color, collage, and creativity throughout the U.S. and Canada for more than 40 years. Below is some additional info that Nita recently sent to me.

The eight basic colors are as follows:

2 blues: French Ultramarine, Phthalo Blue (sometimes called Phthalocyanine Blue) or Winsor Blue, green shade

2 yellows: New Gamboge or Indian Yellow, and Winsor Lemon

3 reds: Winsor or Pyrrol Red, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, and Quinacridone Magenta; or Permanent Rose

1 earth: Burnt Sienna

Artists will be able to do all of the activities with these colors, but if they already have any others, they should bring them to explore. Artists often share swatches in the workshops, too, so they can try as many colors as possible. But they don’t have to go out and buy everything on the list. VOLUNTEER NEEDED FOR HOLIDAY SHOW

A Chairperson is needed for the 2018 Holiday Show and Sale in December. This has been a fun show and sales have gone well in the past, but we can’t have it if no one will Chair it. Barb Olekas has volunteered to assist but cannot chair it due to prior commitments in December. Anyone? Call Billie Dickson at 937-902-6410 please.

Sending out a BOLO (Be On the Look Out) for artists who have left artwork in the Gallery:  Kara McWest – 3 pieces from the Landscape Show; Barbara Arnold – 1 piece from the Landscape Show; Erin Smith-Glenn – 1 piece from the May Member Show; and Carylon Seger – 1 piece from a previous Member Show.  Please come pick up your artwork. The meeting on October 1 is the best time, or call Gallery Coordinator Lori Luckner at 937-235-2513 for other dates that may be available for pick up.  Or, if you know one of these people, perhaps you could pick up the work and take it to them. LOGAN COUNTY ART LEAGUE WEEKEND RETREAT

Calling all creatives and makers! The Logan County Art League is offering a weekend retreat at Kirkmont Center near Zanesfield, Ohio, the weekend of October 12, 13, and 14. No matter what your creative passion is (writing, painting, quilting, photography, etc.) this weekend is an opportunity to get away in a beautiful scenic area, with great accommodations and food, and work and enjoy the comradery of other like-minded individuals.

Enjoy a weekend of relaxation with time to concentrate on your special area of creativity. Explore the 270 acres of woodlands, grasslands, wetlands and ponds. Hike, meditate and gain inspiration for the artist within. Curl up in a chair and read undisturbed. WiFi is available… or unplug for a weekend. Take a break from the rat race. Breathe! Laugh! Create! Accommodations are dormitory style at the Croft House on the upper level, which also includes a large living room and dining area. A kitchenette is available. A loft area is also available as a getaway.  There is a large deck area. The lower level is one large space that is used as a workspace for the artists. Meals are served at the Lodge, except for breakfast that is catered. Dear Members, Patrons, and Friends,

September always brings with it a renewed energy to bring forth more art. The lazy days of summer are behind us and the hustle and bustle of the winter holidays are yet to come. Your Board officers and chair people are already working to make sure we have a good year of entertaining speakers, and demonstrators and workshops with nationally recognized teachers are lined up.

Please make sure your dues are paid for the year and you have completed a Membership Renewal Form. The new Member Directory (which includes “paid up” members only) should be ready for pickup by the October meeting.  Please share your e-mail address with us as that is our preferred way of sending written information to you. We do not share our Membership List outside the organization. Lori Luckner is our new Membership Chairperson. We are all volunteer led, so please be willing to step up to assist calls for volunteers. Many hands make for easier work for us all. Also, please share your thoughts and suggestions in writing to any Board member.

SEPTEMBER 2018 SPEAKER—ROSIE HUART

Our speaker for the September meeting will be mixed-media artist, Rosie Huart. The public is invited to attend and watch as Rosie demonstrates her creative art techniques.

The title of Rosie’s presentation is “Connecting Art & Spirit:  Dancing with Tools and Techniques.”  She will demonstrate how she connects her art and spirit by making an inspirational art journal with intuitive marks. Rosie will demonstrate how daily writing practices can be meditative art. She will be using a variety of tools, such as nibs, markers, graphite, and ruling pens, which offers her a palette of creativity for her mark-making on different surfaces. She also will solicit audience participation in exploring some Golden products for the art journal pages.

Rosie is a mixed-media artist and loves to express her creativity through calligraphy, poetry, painting, creative writing, papermaking, and bookmaking. She is an adjunct professor at Sinclair Community College and has taught workshops nationally and internationally in Italy, France, and Greece. She delights in challenging herself and is always on the lookout for her next artistic adventure. Rosie’s inspiration comes from Eastern spirituality and from that still small voice that is within. She offers Connecting Art and Spirit retreats and workshops locally and nationally.

Rosie was born and raised in Dayton and graduated from Sinclair Community College with a degree in Mental Health Technology and from the University of Dayton with degrees in Art and Psychology. She also is a Golden Artist Educator for Golden Paints.

ART SUPPLIES SALE

Come early to our September meeting for a chance to buy or sell second-hand art supplies, which will be displayed on the table by the window. The Gallery will open at 5:30 pm for you to bring your art supplies to sell or look over what is available to buy. Please, no artwork to be sold at this time. Each person will price his/her own products and conduct sales. The Fairborn Art Association does not charge a commission, so you keep any money you make on sales.

SWEET CORN FESTIVAL SUMMARY

Another Sweet Corn Festival has passed and even though we had 2 inches of rain at noon Friday as we were setting up, Saturday and Sunday were gorgeous. We had a lot of vendors stuck in the mud on Friday when they were setting up but with the help of everyone we managed to get everyone out and in their place. Saturday and Sunday we had the biggest crowds we have had in years. The Lions Club sold 2000 chickens and ran out of both corn and chicken Sunday. Our watermelon booth sold 250 watermelons. The Kettle corn booth sold 350 pounds of popcorn. Between the cooked corn and the ones sold by the dozen at least 25,000 ears of corn were sold. This is just a few statics that we know of at this moment. All the Vendors were very happy. A BIG THANKS TO EACH AND EVERYONE THAT HELPED US.                                 …Submitted by Warren Brown and Sue Red

 Watermelon Booth

Thanks to all the members who served at the Watermelon Booth this year. We had a phenomenal year. We cut up 250 watermelons, sold over 2300 cups, and raised over $3750 for our Fairborn Art Association. this topped last year’s record of $3017. We basically sold out, having only four watermelons left at the end of the festival. We could not have done this without you. I sincerely appreciate all of those who worked this year

 Queen of the Festival

This year is my 26^th festival and it has been a special one. I was honored to be chosen as the Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival Queen. It was a nice change of pace for me. I still did a lot of work, but it also gave me the opportunity to visit the vendors and visitors more. Serving as the Queen with the King Dan Kirkpatrick was a wonderful time. I’ve known Dan for several years and we had a lot of fun.

Normally I ride around checking for problems, checking to see who left early, or taking care of issues. This year I rode around talking to the vendors and visitors asking them how they were enjoying the festival. I was able to ask the new vendors how they were doing and how they liked the festival (which was pretty much all positive). This year I was able to get a different perception of the festival and realized that there are still some improvements needed. We had some parking issues (for which some shuttle suggestions were made) and mud issues (can’t control Mother Nature) but overall it was a fantastic year.

Thank you to the Fairborn Lion’s Club for this honor and I look forward to next year.

We have had to make a big change in our October workshop. Fealing Lin was forced to cancel all of her workshops for the remainder of the year for health reasons. We have been very lucky to find a replacement with such short notice and I think you will be pleased .

LOUISE JACKSON WATERCOLOR CLASS

Please join me and learn how to paint Tulip Circles. The classes are September 11 and 18 from 11:00 am until 3:30 pm. At the end of the second class, the painting should be complete and ready to frame. Size is 32 x 12. For those of you already signed up, this is a reminder. PLEIN AIRE WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP WITH LIBBY RUDOLF

Announcing a Watercolor Workshop in ‘plein  aire’ at the Hertzler House (located in George Rogers Clark Park) on Tuesday, September 18 from 9:30 – Noon with Libby Rudolf as Teacher. The class is limited to 15 and is $15.  Artists are to bring their paints and brushes and a sturdy backboard. MIAMISBURG ART GALLERY

Several Fairborn Art Association members won awards at the Miamisburg Art Gallery 2018 Juried Art Exibitiion during an Awards Ceremony on Saturday, August 11. The Exhibition is open to the public until September 8. Open hours: Monday through Friday 5:30 pm-8:00 pm, Sunday, 1:00 pm-5:00 pm. The Gallery is located at 16 N. Main Street, Miamisburg, OH 45342. Winners include Drawing: 1st Place: “Great Blue Heron” by Tom Kinarney; Honorable Mention: “Serenity” by Sue Seitz. Oil & Acrylic: Honorable Mention: “Family Portrait – Surprise Kiss” by Terri Caprio. Water Media: 1st Place: “Hydrangea” by Elizabeth Martin. 2nd Place: “Who Left The Milk Out” by Lori Hollenbeck. 2018 PIQUA ARTS FESTIVAL

The 2018 Piqua Arts Festival will take place on Saturday, September 1, 2018. Artists from across the state and beyond will be invited to participate in a Plein Air Paint Out as part of the Piqua Arts Festival. Once they have their packet, they can proceed to leave the Arts Festival Area and start painting. Artists will be required to return to the Piqua Arts Festival by 4 pm. They will have a “Wet Paint Sale” where artwork is put on sale from 4 pm until 7 pm. During this time, they will be able to participate in a Quick Paint Competition. Artists wishing to participate will pay a $10 fee and then popular vote (by the artists) will take home the pot. The quick paint will take place from 4:30 to 7 pm and winners for the Paint Out Competition and Quick Paint will be announced afterwards. 1st Place for the Paint Out will be $500, 2nd Place will be $250, 3rd Place will be $150 and two honorable mentions of $50 will be awarded. THIRD ANNUAL ARTFEST – BEAVERCREEK

This “Celebration of All Things Creative” will be held Sunday, September 16, 2016, from 11 am to 6 pm. Location is the Community Park, Factory Road and SR 35, Beavercreek, Ohio.
DAYTON VISUAL ARTS CENTER ANNUAL MEETING

Dayton Visual Arts Center is holding their Annual Meeting/New Member Soiree on Wednesday, September 25, 2018 from 6–9 pm. At 6:15 pm Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley will present a Toast to New Members.
