 Dear Members, Patrons, and Friends,

It was a pleasure being your president for this past year. Everyone was so very helpful.

Remember that it is not how you paint or who you paint or what you paint but the fact that you take time to paint what you see through your eyes.

See you at our next meeting on June 5 for our June Social, and remember that everyone is to bring food. We will have a busy and fun meeting, then we break until September. Have a good summer.

Loren Red

President

FAIRBORN STREET REPAIRS

The City of Fairborn has notified us that they will be working on curbs and gutters on Central Street beginning NOW and ending approximately June 15. This will affect our access to the parking lots at the Gallery. There is a great possibility that they will be replacing the badly deteriorating curb on the right side of the Senior Apartments building, which also houses our Gallery. The entrance to parking on the left side of the building may also require repair/replacement. They said they will try to leave one entrance open for the use of residents, including our members/guests. This may affect our use of the Gallery on our Paint In days, our June meeting, and on the Sundays the Gallery is open for the Spring Members’ Show. We may have to park on the side streets. Parking is available in the City parking lot at nights and on weekend days.

WEBSITE NOTES

If you have access to the internet, please go to our website at www.fairbornart.org for additional articles throughout the summer. We also post photographs of meetings and other events that we are unable to publish in the printed version of this newsletter.

REMINDERS

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 5, at 7:00 pm. The deadline for submitting articles to be included in the September Newsletter is Monday, August 20, 2018. Please email your articles to  [email protected] or call Jackie Albright at 937-233-7532.

NOTES FROM OUR NEW PRESIDENT, BILLIE DICKSON

We are in need of volunteers for the FAA Gallery.

First of all, Larry Hawkins has resigned his position as greeter, so we need a friendly face to be at the desk before meetings, make sure we fill out our name tags (and door prize labels), and welcome new members and guests. Larry also selects and buys the door prizes, and helps to set up the gallery for meetings. Our meetings start at 7 p.m. so the greeter would need to be at the desk by 6:30 p.m. at the latest.

Secondly, we need a Chairperson to take on the  Members’ Show . This person secures the ribbons for the show, works with the Workshop Chair (who arranges for the workshop presenter to judge the show), makes sure the prospectus is ready by the March meeting, recruits volunteers to help with the receiving of art, hanging the show, and sitting with the Gallery on open Sundays.  I have filled this position the past 2 years and can tell you it is not a difficult job at all, and there are LOTS of members who help out regularly and know what they are doing!

We have been without a Historian for at least 2 years. This person takes  printed information and photos of meetings and shows and turns them into scrapbooks for all our members to view.  Going forward, we would like to have this information saved digitally where it can be placed on our website.

We also would like to find people who would be interested in maintaining our flower beds on either side of the front door, set up and take down tables and chairs for our meetings, and any number of small jobs around the Gallery that need to be done from time to time. You will definitely be asked to volunteer at the Sweet Corn Festival, as well.

Please call or text me at 937-902-6410, or email me at [email protected], if you are willing to help with any of these jobs.

FAA is a well run organization thanks to our many volunteers.  Thank you all for all you do.

Billie Dickson

FEALING LIN WORKSHOP

Fealing Lin Workshop, October 2-5, 2018, presented by the Fairborn Art Association, 9:30 am to 4:00 pm, in the Gallery at the rear of the Fairborn Senior Apartment Building, 221 N. Central Ave., Fairborn, OH 45424.

Award-winning watercolorist, Fealing Lin of San Marino, California, was born in Taiwan and began her journey into artistic expression as a protégé of renowned professor Ching-Jung Chen in Taiwan, subsequently pursuing her career in the United States with watercolorist and senior art historian professor Verna Wells. With a fluidity of colors, Ms. Lin combines impressionistic strokes and semi-abstract techniques to elicit life and movement in her portrait and landscape watercolors. Her paintings adorn the paper with both harmony and emotion. Although briefly diverted from her passion by a family tradition of medicine and dentistry, Fealing ultimately abandoned her tray of instruments and high-speed drills in favor of her pallet and brushes. Now she is a teacher, demonstrator, judge, and active exhibitor. “Fealing Lin paints poems that vibrate with light and color …  long may she continue to delight the eye and move the spirit. “My passion for watercolor,” says Ms. Lin, “comes from the opportunity it gives me to be totally spontaneous in the pursuit of traditional watercolor transparency which is the ‘glow’ from the white paper that emerges through the paint once a fusion occurs from the application of wet onto wet. Fealing was an annual guest instructor at Yosemite National Park for more than 10 years, an instructor at Brand Art Studios at Brand Library in Glendale, and San Gabriel Recreation center in San Gabriel. She was featured at Descanso Gardens Gallery for 10 consecutive years.  She has taught watercolor workshops throughout California and the US. Fealing has been enthusiastically embraced by the general public and private collectors alike. Fealing is a signature member of National Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Watercolor West, San Diego Watercolor Society and the Missouri Watercolor Society. Her works have been juried in many national exhibitions including NWS, WW, TWSA (Transparent Watercolor Society of America), Brand National, Audubon Artist, San Diego Watercolor International, and many others. She has won numerous awards among these shows. Fealing’s works also appear in many magazines and books, including Watercolor Magic, Artist Sketch Magazine, International Artist Magazine, Best Watercolor, and Splash (9, 10, 11,12 & 14).

To register: Please send a non-refundable deposit of 440 along with the following form to:

 Dear Members, Patrons, and Friends,

Spring has not sprung yet. Today we had snow again. Maybe by our May meeting we will have spring weather so we can get rid of our winter clothes and ice scrapers and enjoy the evening. Our speaker that night will be the artist who will be the instructor for the spring workshop, Lian Quan Zhen. Hope to see you all there on May 1, 2018, at 7 pm. The Board will meet at 6 pm. I am still looking for replacement for me to mark fields for the Sweet Corn Festival. Please volunteer if you can.

SPRING WORKSHOP WITH LIAN QUAN ZHEN

One of the reasons Fairborn Art Association exists is to bring nationally known artists to present workshops for our members to improve or begin their watercolor skills. May’s workshop from May 2 to May 4 features Lian Quan Zhen, an internationally known artist. I’ve never seen any of his workshops not be overbooked; however we still have some openings. Lian will be doing two paintings with the class: one a landscape and one an animal. His supplies list is on his website (use the list for regular watercolor painting, not Chinese painting). This is a must if you enjoy watercolor painting. For additional information on his workshops and a list of art supplies, see http://www.lianspainting.com/workshops.htm . Please send your deposit of $40 and registration soon.  The workshop costs only $250 for members and $275 for non-members.  Full payment is due April 23rd. APRIL 2018 SPEAKER—DIANA MARRA

Ms. Diana Marra will be demonstrating her art techniques at the regular meeting of the Fairborn Art Association, Tuesday, April 3, 2018. Marra loves the elegance and simplicity of the Chinese Brushstroke. Marra said, “Each stroke can represent a leaf, a wing, an emotion. So much can be said with so little. A simple elegant piece transitions into all cultures and fits every décor.”

For as long as she can remember, Diana has wanted to be an artist. Yet for whatever reason, she felt she had to do something scientific and did not pursue art professionally. With a dual major in Chemistry and Psychology from Ohio University, she began a 33-year career with Formica Corporation, primarily in Engineering, Design, and Global Product Development. Being able to visualize the end result as an artist, and develop and implement production steps as an engineer, was a unique and vital combination to her success.

Marra turned a 20-year, sideline pursuit of art into an in-depth investigation into Art History, Designs of the Masters, Color Theory, PhotoShop, Faux Finishing, Botanical Drawing, and Chinese Brush Painting. And there she found her niche: the ancient art of Brush Painting, with such elegance in its simplicity, captured her heart.

2010 began a year of global travel and artistic study, to capture the cultures and landscapes for future paintings, from jungle-trekking and cave-tubing in Belize to the International Crane Foundation in Wisconsin. She also toured and studied in Italy and from the Mediterranean to Hawaii.

Marra’s Brush Painting education included the Art Academy of Cincinnati, private study with Karl Feng, and a three-week tour and study with Ning Yeh in China including the New China University in Beijing, climbing The Great Wall, Yellow Mountain and Zhangjiajie, which was the inspiration for ‘Avatar’… old China as seen through an artist’s eyes. Her style includes both Traditional, using Chinese ink and watercolor, matted and framed, and a new Contemporary style using acrylics on gallery-wrapped canvas.

SWEET CORN FESTIVAL

Time is passing swiftly and soon it will be time for the Sweet Corn Festival – third weekend in August – and a lot still needs to be done. If you can help, please attend our next committee meeting on April 24 at 7 pm. Loren Red is still looking for replacement for him to mark fields.

Our group that handled parking the last couple of years is moving on so we will need a group to take over this task – it takes 10 to 15 people during each day depending on how they want to assign people. It would be about 10 am till 5 pm on Saturday 8/18 and 10 am till 4 pm on Sunday 8/19. We will supply safety vests, water and radios, and a tent for breaks during the day. The Fairborn Police Department will be available to provide some guidance on the process. There is an honorarium provided for these efforts. Please contact Warren Brown at [email protected] for any questions.

SPRING WORKSHOP WITH LIAN QUAN ZHEN

YUKI HALL WATERCOLOR CLASS

Yuki Hall will be teaching an 8-week watercolor class titled “Watercolor Working with Perspective” starting March 26. The class will meet on Monday mornings from 9:30 to 12:30. In this 8-week course, students will learn fundamental concepts and application of both aerial and linear perspective. Perspective is by far the most important tool to create a sense of 3-dimensional depth in a 2-dimensional picture plane. Used effectively, it allows us to inject a powerful mood and atmosphere in your paintings. However, many students are intimidated about the term “perspective,” thinking it is only understood by artists with some architectural or engineering background. Nothing is farther from the truth. Perspective, discussed and demonstrated in simple, step-by-step fashion with practical examples, can be easily understood and utilized by students of any background and any skill level. A generous amount of class time will be spent on drawing lessons using various perspective tools, as well as other design concepts that are important for creating paintings with strong visual impact. Yuki’s highly organized, friendly, and non-intimidating teaching style has been well received for years by students of all levels. The cost for this 8-week class is $105. To register, please send the payment and the registration form to Yuki Hall, 4136 Fox Fern Ct. Beavercreek, OH 45432.  For any questions regarding this class, please call or email Yuki at 937-679-2464, [email protected] or www.yukihallfineart.com . Registration forms are available in the Gallery and is attached.
