PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Hello Fellow Artists!
We’re Baaaaaack! Where did the summer go? It flew by and now we’re back in session. I hope everyone enjoyed our break and now it’s down to business.
The 2024 Sweet Corn Festival is history, and I’d like to thank all those who volunteered their time and energies to make it a success: Jerry Red, Warren Brown, Sheryl Scott, Cheryl Miracle, and Roger Browning, who all supervise important committees, not to mention Jane Trame, who was constantly running around “taking care of business.” There are many of you who were there as many as all four days setting up, working the vendors’ gate, the information tent or the watermelon booth, tearing down, and filling in when needed. I really can’t thank you all enough because so much of this includes physical labor and long hours, which I find isn’t as easy as I’ve gotten older. You all are “the best” and I hope you accept my heartfelt gratitude.
I want to remind you that we will have an Art Supplies Sale from 5:30–6:30 pm before our meeting, which is Tuesday, September 3, at 7:00 pm, where our guest demo artist is our very own Shirlee Bauer … hooray! Shirlee is a very talented, award winning artist, and I can’t wait to see what she has is store for us!
Take care and keep creating!
Linda Brandenburg, President
SEPTEMBER’S FEATURED ARTIST – SHIRLEE BAUER
We are proud to have our very own, Shirlee Bauer, demonstrating her artistic techniques this Tuesday, September 3, at 7:00 pm.
Shirlee Bauer was raised in Centerville, Ohio, and graduated with a degree in Graphic Arts. Her career as a Graphic Designer took over a 30-year span and she is now devoting her artistic endeavors to watercolor painting.
Shirlee’s watercolor journey started when she was privileged to watch demos from a well-known Cincinnati, Ohio, Watercolorist in college. The transparency and flow of colors was intriguing and motivated her to study the medium further with local artists throughout the Dayton and Middletown, Ohio, area. She has furthered her studies by attending workshops with nationally acclaimed artists.
As a Watercolorist, Shirlee is motivated in designing compositions which are compelling in values and design. She enjoys allowing the colors to blend or dance with each other creating unique backgrounds and textures. At times her paintings become abstract in nature. Her work includes portraits, landscapes and figurative paintings.
Shirlee resides in West Carrollton, Ohio, and has two children and five grandchildren. With family living nearby, they have inspired many of her portrait paintings.

OCTOBER WORKSHOP WITH DAVID R. SMITH
We are excited to have David R. Smith as the guest artist for our October Workshop!
David R. Smith began his artistic journey studying Chinese Brush Painting in the United States and China. A decade later, he was introduced to Western style watercolor painting and was amazed at how enjoyable and forgiving it was compared to working on rice paper. Ever since, he has been hooked on watercolor painting, and has become a popular artist and instructor nationally and internationally, as well as a sought after juror. David is the recipient of the Skyledge Award (the highest recognition awarded by the Transparent Watercolor Society of America), an award winner and signature member of the American Watercolor Society, signature member of the National Watercolor Society, and his work has earned him numerous “Best of Show” awards for both his studio and plein air work, signature memberships, showings in galleries and museums across the United States and abroad, and inclusion in publications including Fine Art Connoisseur, International Artist, and multiple editions of SPLASH – The Best of Watercolor. With over 25 years of experience as a public school teacher, he is skilled at breaking down complex concepts and skills into easily learned chunks and now enjoys helping workshop participants find success with watercolor. As much as he loves to paint, he has found sharing his watercolor passion through instruction even more gratifying and he is most rewarded when he hears a frequent comment: “This is one of the best workshops I’ve ever taken.”
The registration form for the October 7–9, 2024, Workshop is available in the Gallery and on our website. This is coming up fast so please register soon!
