Happy Spring Everyone!

Fairborn Art Association is active again!

April 6 will be our third meeting of the year; our workshops with Misuk Goltz and our Member Fine Art Show will be in May. We will introduce our Scholarship Winners and the Sweet Corn Festival Queen and King in June, as well as vote on our Popular Choice Awards, and introduce the 2020-22 Board. In July, the BW Greenway will hold their Landscapes 2021 Art Exhibition. Then on August 21 & 22 we will hold the Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival, which will provide a community service to Fairborn and solidify our financial security for another year. It feels so good to be able to spend so much quality time with our FAA friends again.  There is more information available on these events elsewhere in the newsletter.

Dues are payable by June 1 – please make sure you download and complete the Membership Form to submit with your dues (yes, even if you’ve done it before). Please indicate the ways you can help out Fairborn Art Association on the form.  This information is critical as we look for people who have talents that are needed to run this fine organization going forward.

There are some changes in the way we are conducting the Member Fine Art Show and the Popular Choice Voting in June.  These are spelled out in the Prospectus for the show, so please read it carefully.

In May we will be voting on the Board positions for 2021-22.  Everyone is encouraged to participate as a volunteer Board member or Committee Chair.  If there is a position you think you would like to hold, please speak up.  The past few years we have presented a slate of officers to vote on, but that is because we have not had members step up and give us the opportunity to actually make a choice for a candidate.

Our April speaker will be Tim Langenderfer, whose presentation will focus on oil painting.

If you follow Fairborn Art Association on Facebook, you can view the demonstrations for the February and March meetings.  Thanks to Connie and Jim Gifford for making these available to us!

The meeting is April 6, 2021, at 7:00 p.m. The 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. time slot is social time.  Again, reservations must be made by emailing Debbie Cosenza.  Masks and social distancing are still required, so seating is limited, and refreshments will not be available.

Cheap Joe asks, “Why not add people in your artwork?  Are you afraid because you can’t draw figures?  Look at van Gogh, all his figures were ill proportioned.  And how much are his paintings worth?”

Billie Dickson, President

In the Middletown Journal-News, Tuesday, March 16, 2021 edition, the headline on the Local & State page reads: “MAC Gears up for Exhibitions of Regional Artists.” Later in that article is a paragraph on FAA member, Shirlee Bauer: “Another exhibition coming this spring will include Ohio Watercolor Society artist Shirlee Bauer’s collected works of watercolor paintings, which will be on display in the MAC Lobby Gallery from April 1 through May 27.” The MAC is the Middletown Arts Center, located at 130 N. Verity Parkway, Middletown, Ohio, 513-424-2417.

If you are aware of a graduating senior (perhaps a neighbor, a niece, grandson, etc.) who will be pursuing art in college, please encourage either the student or the student’s art teacher to contact Jim Gifford, [email protected] for a scholarship application package. The package should be submitted by the student’s art instructor. The following letter was mailed to all the local school districts (although the student does not have to be local): “The Fairborn Art Association has three $1,000 scholarships available for graduating seniors who are planning to pursue art in college. An application is included with this letter. Please duplicate and use for as many students as you would like to recommend. Please let art teachers know to share this announcement with their classes. Applications must be mailed and postmarked no later than May 10, 2021.”

Abstract Art, a live class offered through Jacqueline’s new online classroom format, New Zenler, is open for booking now. In this class Jacqueline will demonstrate the various ways she uses cheese cloth in her paintings, creating both actual and visual textures and to define composition in an abstract way.
