MAY SPEAKER—FRED GRAFF, AWS. NWS. TWS

Fred Graff is one of the foremost watercolorists of today. He is among a select group of watercolorists who are signature members of all three major watercolor societies: American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, and Transparent Watercolor Society of America “Master Status.” His continuous growth and development in his pursuit of watercolor has enabled him to be a leading artist/educator in the field of watercolor painting.

He believes that  “When an artist understands the basic principles and elements of design, the subject matter becomes unlimited. The selection of my subject matter is determined by my immediate response to the subject and its surrounding  environment. Fred says, “It is essential that I go beyond the level of just recording facts. It is my intent to convey a spontaneous response in an unrestricted yet semi-controlled manner. This approach to watercolor painting lends itself to a unique and unpredictable experience. This state of uncertainty compels me to further explore the world of watercolor.”

Upon graduation from Miami University, Fred studied privately with the late Franklin A. Bates. He pursued additional graduate work at both Kent State University and the University of Akron. In addition to being a retired art teacher for the Berea City Schools, Fred has been conducting numerous watercolor workshops, demonstrations, and critiques throughout the United States and abroad for the last 40 years. He has won numerous awards from various watercolor societies including Millard Sheets Memorial Medal award, Emily Goldsmith Award and the most recent Bud Gretchen Marble Medal from American Watercolor Society.

A native of the Western Reserve, Frederick C. Graff resides in his hometown of Medina, Ohio with his wife Jan, who is his workshop and gallery coordinator.

DAYTON METRO LIBRARY CALL FOR ARTISTS

The Dayton Metro Library through their project “Libraries for a Smarter Future” is announcing a new project they call, “ReImagining Works.” The plan is to put original works of art into each new or newly-remodeled Dayton Metro Library location. Artwork will be created by local artists, inspired by existing works in the Dayton Art Institute’s permanent collection. Eventually, each Library will display a new piece of art which is a result of collaboration among the Art Institute, the Library, Library users, and artists in our region. This ReImagining Works project is the first of 17 projects for the new libraries; original, commissioned interior and exterior artwork will be sought periodically for the next 3 years. All commissioned pieces will be conceived in response to an artwork held in the permanent collection of The Dayton Art Institute. Voting will take place for each building. Artworks from the voting will be chosen to be included in each full Request for Proposals (RFP). The E.C. Doren RFP will be available on May 13, 2014. Artists will have one month to develop a response to chosen artwork. Any aspect can be utilized as source material for the submission. Specifications of the site and a detailed timeline for installation will also be included in the RFP. Look for more detailed information on the Dayton Metro Library website at http://www.daytonmetrolibrary.org/works/artists . This is a unique opportunity to have your artwork in a new venue in the local area.
