On Tuesday evening, December 2, the membership of F.A.A. gathered in our annual Holiday Party. We shopped for the Holidays from the items displayed from our fellow artists for the Holiday Fine Art and Craft Sale, enjoyed good food and the fellowship of our friends, and had a fun time playing our “game” of giving (and stealing!) holiday ornaments and gifts brought by each of the members. A jolly time was had by all. The evening’s festivities were overseen by President Sandy Kinnamon and “Santa” Warren Brown, ably assisted by head elf Dallas Red.

In addition, Treasurer Sue Red read a letter from Dayton History thanking F.A.A. for our generous donation in memory of former F.A.A. President, the late Gerald Page. The donation was made to Dayton History, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, to support their Art of Manufacturing exhibit at Dayton Carillon Park. The exhibit is set to open in 2015. This donation is an example of F.A.A.’s mission of encouraging art appreciation.

Janet Rogers AWS, FWS, Comes to FAA

Janet Rogers gave a demonstration of “Expressive Watercolor Portraits” to the assembled members on Tuesday evening October 7, 2014. Ms. Rogers is a member of the American Watercolor Society and the Florida Watercolor Society. She is a nationally known instructor in watercolor, giving workshops throughout the U.S. as well as in Europe. She has her own line of instructional DVDs and had her work published in both magazine and book form. During the week of October 6-9 she was conducting a watercolor workshop for all levels of artists at the FAA Gallery. Her goal was to give the students confidence to approach portraits and floral subjects in a expressive and  spontaneous  manner.

She uses an intuitive approach to working in watercolor, for both portraits, and floral subjects. Her discussion of her training, techniques, and materials were both entertaining and humorous. While she was talking to the members she was able to complete a beautiful watercolor portrait from start to finish in an hour’s time. It was a masterful performance.

Dear Members and Patrons,

It’s beginning to look a lot like Fall. I can’t help but think of the sunflower field, Young’s Dairy, Enon’s Apple Butter Festival, and of course our October Workshop. The leaves will soon begin to turn and what better time than this to use our imaginations to paint a colorful leaf painting. The leaves can be any color we desire and what a wonderful way to think about positive and negative shapes.

Many good things are happening here at FAA and our speaker will be inspiring, so bring a friend, enjoy great food, and a fabulous program. I am sure we will be energized and will want to paint. The meeting begins promptly at 7 pm. The Board will meet at 6 pm.

The 33rd annual Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival was held on August 16 and 17 at Fairborn Community Park. The Festival is co-sponsored by the FAA and the Fairborn Lions Club. The Festival was well attended this year, in spite of showers on Saturday afternoon. Heater of the Dayton Dragons made an appearance, as well as Bonez of the Dayton Demonz Hockey team and Rowdy Raider from Wright State University. Good food, entertainment, and a good time was had by all. The Festival Committee would like to thank all FAA members who worked at the Festival this year; at the Information Booth, at the Watermelon Booth, at the Art Tent, at the Vendor Gate, and with the Field Marking. It is a lot of work, but also a lot of fun! For new members, the Festival pays the rent for our Gallery and enables FAA to award scholarships to high school graduates who plan to study art in college. Encouraging art education is one of our organization’s goals.                                                           …..Submitted by Robert Beireis

We had rain at the Festival Saturday afternoon, which scared a few attendees away, unfortunately. So we didn’t sell as many watermelons this year as last year, but we still made a good profit. The Watermelon Booth made a profit of $2106.58; thanks to the many, many wonderful workers who worked well in teams.

HISTORY VIA LOCAL ARTISTS

For those of you who missed the Life & Arts front-page article in the Dayton Daily News on Sunday August 17, the Fairborn Art Association contributed to funding for a new exhibition being developed by Dayton History. “The Art of Manufacturing:  Exploring Dayton’s Inventive History through the Eyes of Artists” will become a permanent exhibition at Carillon Park, according to Dayton History’s president and CEO Brady Kress. The idea was  “…to make a whole exhibit … of artists who were part of Dayton’s Manufacturing history …” The Park stipulated that those artists chosen had to have had a direct connection to local manufacturers and had to be deceased. The article was accompanied by a photograph of Dayton History Director of Collections Mary Oliver holding a painting by our former member, the late Gerald Page (although not credited to him). Also in the picture are two FAA members, Marilyn Hart and David Smith, who were instrumental in initiating the project and brought in Gerald’s daughter, Dawn Knorr to help raise funds. Gerald’s two daughters, Dawn Knorr and Diane Giaratiano, approached us seeking help with funding the exhibit—the committee needed $25,000 to mount and promote the new exhibit. Fairborn Art Association kicked off the funding by pledging $5000. Quoting Dayton artist David Smith, “Creativity is something that has long been in the air we breathe in Dayton, Ohio. This new exhibit will help visitors gain insight into a part of our history that has largely been forgotten.” A tentative list of artists to be featured includes Richard Black, Otto Fiedler, Harry Gadbury, Bob Koepnick, Homer Hacker, Reginald Litten, Lloyd Ostendorf, Gerald Page, Alois Segerer, Coby Whitmore, Emerick Malagorski, Kathleen Patterson. Fund donors will be recognized with a plaque as part of the exhibit. The complete article will be available at the FAA Gallery.

IN THE GALLERY

It’s not too soon to think Christmas. So I hope that you are getting ready for the FAA Holiday Fine Art and Craft Show. Robert and I will be sending around the sign-up sheets in October. Also, because Robert is working more hours now, I’m looking for someone who would like to work with and learn what we do, as a back-up person and maybe take over for me as needed. Ideally, this should be someone who lives near the gallery. We live in Springfield and it is sometimes hard to get there quickly.

I’m also looking ahead to next year because time has a way of getting away from us. I’m looking for FAA Members who would like to be a Featured Artist of the month in our Members Gallery; February and April 2015 are both available. This is a chance for you as a member to have your own show within the rules of  the FAA.                                                                …..Submitted by gayle Beireis
