Mary Cocca Obituary
Mary A. Cocca, a former president, officer, and board member of the Fairborn Art Association, passed away early on the morning of April 1, 2015 at Hospice in Dayton. Mary was 89 years old. Morris & Sons Funeral Home will take care of the visitation and burial. Visitation for Mary Cocca was on Monday, April 6 at 9 am in the Bride’s Room inside the entrance of Mary Help of Christians Church, 954 N. Maple Ave., Fairborn. The funeral mass followed at 10 am. Being that it was Easter Monday, there were lots of Easter flowers decorating the church.
April 2015 Watercolor Show in the Gallery
The Fairborn Art Association Gallery will house a display of an art show, “Thursday Class/Paint-in Art Show; Instructor, Misuk Golz.” A reception was held on Saturday, April 11, 2015 from 1 pm to 4 pm where food and beverages and live entertainment were provided. The reception was a huge success with many attendees expressing their enjoyment of the artwork. The show will be open on three consecutive Sundays, April 12, 19, and 26, also 1 pm to 4 pm. Fairborn Art Association Art Gallery is located in the rear of the Fairborn Senior Apartment Building on 221 North Central Avenue, Fairborn, Ohio.
Paintings are available for sale. The artists are members of the ThursdayClass/Paint-in group. We painted together for over two years with Misuk Goltz instructing and coordinating. The artists are both advanced and intermediate watercolorists. At the show you will find a variety of subjects including portraits expressed in beautiful watercolor.

Members’ Spring Fine Art Show
The FAA Members’ Spring Fine Art Show is coming up in May, so get busy and paint! It is time to get ready for the Members’ Spring Show. Registration for the show will be held on Monday, April 27 from 9 am-12 pm and from 1-3 pm; and on Wednesday, April 29 from 10 am-12:00 pm. We need your help for registration, setting up for the show, and sitting the show. The Show will be open to the public the first three Sundays in May. En Plein Air 2015 Juried Art Exhibition
En Plein Air is a juried painting exhibition presented as a collaboration between B-W Greenway Community Land Trust & Fairborn Art Association. The show is held in the Fairborn Art Association Gallery at 221 North Central Avenue, Fairborn, OH 45324. It was established in 2009 to heighten public awareness of our local greenspaces and the need to preserve them, as well as to foster an interest in painting from nature.
Each year a different location in the Fairborn, OH, area has been chosen as the subject of the paintings. The 2015 location is Lower Valley Pike Scenic Byway, which begins at Rte 40 in Springfield, OH, and continues to Rte235/Rte4 just south of I-70 south of Medway. (A map is provided in the attached Prospectus.)
The juror for En Plein Air 2015 is Mr. Kevin Harris. Kevin Harris teaches Drawing and Printmaking at Sinclair Community College. He is a graduate of Hampton University and the University of Cincinnati. (For more about Kevin, see the Prospectus.)
This show is open to artists 16 years and older, living within 200 miles of Fairborn, OH.
Work must be original 2D, created by painting outdoors from March until July 4, 2015. Painting may be created in oil, acrylic, pastel, or watercolor, and can include mixed media within the painting. Cash prizes totalling $300 will be awarded at the Opening Reception July 12, 1-4 pm.

Yuki, a native of Tokyo, Japan, began painting in 2006. She has studied with several nationally and internationally acclaimed artists including David Taylor, Mark Mehaffey,

Yuki believes in planning out a painting before she begins. She likes to do a pencil sketch first, followed by a monochromatic painting. Then she may do the subject in color. For her demonstration, she did a monochromatic painting. She uses Dervan Liquid Pencil for her monochromatic work.
She works from areas of light to dark. She will splash water onto the darker areas to create spatter. She likes to paint with the power of suggestion to invite the viewer to participate in the subject of her painting.
Three important areas that she emphasizes in her work are (a) shapes; (b) tonal value; and (c) edges. She feels that the use of a monochromatic scheme allows the artist to get in touch with tones in a painting. She also discussed the types of brushes and paper that she prefers.

Linda Keller’s work is called Zentangle. Starting with a square, the artist adds shapes to build a pattern. Using straight lines, zigzags, circles, flowers, whatever one’s heart desires to create an abstract work of art.
Three members represented F.A.A. at the Greene County Council on Aging Exposition on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Xenia, Ohio. Gayle Beireis, Sheryl Scott, and Linda Keller did demonstrations of their respective works for the public at the Expo. This is the third consecutive year that F.A.A. has had a booth at the expo.

Spring has finally arrived in Ohio. It is about time. We could sure use some warm weather. Spring is a time of renewal and new growth. I am hoping we are all refreshed and renewed and that our art work will show it. So go outdoors and start working on a painting, or sketch for the Plain Air show coming up. APRIL SPEAKER—YUKI HALL
Yuki Hall is a watercolor artist who was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. Having spent the first two decades of her life in Japan, it is no surprise that her approach to watercolor painting reflects eastern influences; simplicity and the effective use of tonal value pattern are emphasized and are executed in a spontaneous, fluid manner. Yuki’s journey with watercolor painting started when she took a beginner’s watercolor class at a local art center in 2006. She then further studied the medium with nationally and internationally acclaimed artists such as David Taylor, Mark Mehaffey, and Alvaro Castagnet. She has won numerous awards including Best of Show and been accepted into various prestigious national and international juried competitions. Her work has also been published in the Watercolor Artist Magazine. Yuki is an avid teacher, teaching at various locations including the Fairborn Art Association Gallery. Her highly organized, friendly and non-intimidating teaching style has been well received by students of all levels. Yuki lives in Beavercreek, Ohio with her husband and two daughters. WATERCOLOR FAST & LOOSE with Frank Francese, NWS, TWSA-Master
Join us in this exciting workshop with Frank Francese, where Frank will show and teach us his signature way of painting watercolor – Fast & Loose approach. Frank will be demonstrating a variety of subject matter, showing us the time tested method of creating an eye-catching composition with brilliant color and interesting shapes. Plenty of individual help will be provided. All skill levels are welcome. WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP with Mark Mehaffey, AWS, DF, NWS, TWSA Master
This watercolor workshop, presented by the Fairborn Art Association, will be Monday through Thursday, November 2 to 5, 2015, from 9 am to 4 pm daily. The workshop will be held at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery, located in the rear of the Fairborn Senior Apartment Building, 221 N. Central Ave., Fairborn, OH. In this 4-day workshop, participants will create paintings using the elements of shape, line, value, and color to simplify subject and use a variety of color plans to create emotion and mood. Discussion of content, the importance of color schemes and line quality will also be discussed. Participants will also work intuitively with shape, color, line and especially texture to produce an abstraction with a personal focus and a representational work based on personal reference choices. All levels are welcome as long as everyone is comfortable with their materials. Nationally and internationally recognized artist Mark Mehaffey is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, DF, National Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Master, and the Watercolor West. Mark has won many major awards in juried exhibitions across the world, including Beverly Green Memorial Purchase Award from the National Watercolor Society, the Silver Medal of Honor and the Arches Paper Co. Award from American Watercolor Society. He is also an author of Creative Watercolor Workshop, published by North Light Books, and many instructional DVDs by Creative Catalyst Productions as well as Artists Network Productions. The Festival is fast approaching and we will be seeking your help again this year. Fairborn Art Association met on Tuesday, March 3, to see a mixed media demonstration by Karen Becker Beneditti. Ms. Beneditti is originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She has an Art Education degree from the University of Wisconsin. She also has studied at Milwaukee’s Layton School of Art, and has taught elementary art. She also has taught workshops and seminars in Ohio, Indiana, and Wisconsin. She paints with watermedia and mixed media, primarily fluid acrylic, using handmade papers, either imported or made and embellished by the artist. She applies paint in layers on the surface of watercolor paper, canvas, or board. She calls her technique Layered Fluid Acrylic Painting.
Karen applies mat medium to a black gesso background, then attaches plastic sheeting covered with paint to the background. As the mat medium dries, the paint adheres to the mat medium as the plastic sheeting is removed. The paint applied in this manner renders various abstract shapes. She will use thicker or thinner paint to get different values. Different colors are added in layers to build a work on the background. Paint can be applied directly to the plastic, then applied to the background. She frequently uses complementary contrasting colors to achieve a finished product. The results are high contrast, eye-catching works.

Yes, I am still in FL, but my very capable Vice President will be conducting the March meeting. It is rather cool down here, but we keep hearing Ohio has snow, snow, and more snow, and very cold temperatures. Hopefully each of you are staying warm. Just keep thinking, Spring is only three weeks away! Our FAA building is always warm and inviting so make sure you come to the March meeting as Karen Benedetti will warm your heart with a great demo. Our next meeting is March 3 at 7:00 pm. The Board will meet at 6:00 pm.

Karen was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She has an Art Education degree from the University of Wisconsin. She has also studied at Milwaukee’s Layton School of Art and at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She taught elementary art for several years in Milwaukee and has taught workshops and seminars in Ohio, Indiana, and Wisconsin. At present, her painting is a full-time endeavor. Karen paints with watermedia and mixed media, primarily fluid acrylic, using handmade papers, both imported and those made or embellished by the artist. The paint is applied in layers and built up on the surface of watercolor paper, board, or canvas. While the subject of Karen’s work can be landscape and earth forms, she also has a new series of contemporary urban views and figurative concepts. Karen will be doing a mixed media demo.

WATERCOLOR LANDSCAPE WORKSHOP with Buong-Kil Juong
Watercolor landscape painter from Korea, Buong-Kil Juong, will present a three-day workshop March 9-11, 2015, Monday through Wednesday, 9:30-4:00 pm at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery. He will lead the class with his masterly wet-on-wet method to portray his beloved countryside landscape over four seasons. Buong-Kil Juong was born in South Korea and studied art from high school through college. He has been painting watercolor for the past 35 years and serves important positions in the Korean Watercolor Society and various educational associations. He has been teaching and serving as a juror for many art competitions. He also is regarded as a respected watercolor artist in China and he has held many exhibitions in various Chinese cities. He lives in Jae Cheun City, South Korea. Misuk Goltz took a one-week private lesson from him in Jae Cheun City from January 2–8 this year and she will be hosting his stay in the US, translating, and assisting with his presentation. The tuition will be $200 for the three-day workshop for FAA members and $220 for non-members. The workshop needs at least 20 participants to cover the artist’s air fair and lesson fee. Watercolor landscape painter from Korea, Boung-Kil Juong, will give a presentation on Thursday, March 12, from 6–8:30 pm at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery, 221 N. Central Ave., Fairborn, Ohio. He will talk about his artistic journey and demonstrate the landscapes he so loves to paint. Misuk Goltz took a one week private lesson from him in Jae Cheun City, Korea, from January 2–8 this year and she will be hosting his stay in the US, translating and assisting with his presentation. The lecture is open to anyone who is interested in learning about Juong’s painting. The admission fee for the evening is $10, which includes Korean snacks. Long-time member and past president David B. Addison passed away January 28, 2015 at age 84. David earned a degree in illustration from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1952, served as an artist and illustrator in the Air Force Orientation Group, and for 20 years was Chief of Exhibits at the Museum of the Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB. Dave was vice president of the Fairborn Art Association during 1964-1965. Dave is survived by his wife, Christina, and many relatives and friends. Dave donated his body for medical research so there was no funeral. Donations in his name can be made to St. Helen’s Educational Endowment Fund.
Yuki Hall’s painting, Rainy Day–Main Street was featured in Watercolor Artist Magazine, April 2015 issue as one of Honorable Mention winners of the Annual Watercolor Showcase competition. This is her 2-years-in-a-row appearance in this prestigious magazine. Congratulations, Yuki.
FAA ART SCHOLARSHIPS
This is the time of year when FAA solicits applications for its college scholarships. Each year, FAA awards two $1,000 scholarships to area high school seniors who plan to pursue a college level art education. Robert Beireis has mailed applications out to area high schools. If any FAA members know of a high school senior from our area who plans to major in art in college, please have the student complete an application. The deadline for submission is April 10, 2015. Fairborn Art Association Meeting February 2015
On Tuesday evening, February 3, 2015, the F.A.A. members gathered for their first meeting of the new year. Kevin Buntin, Figurative Sculptor, was the featured speaker.
Mr. Buntin demonstrated his creativity in the realm of sculpture of imaginary characters that he develops from natural and man-made materials. He uses locally sourced gourds and other materials, such as leaves, in the construction of poseable figures for display. He finds his inspiration in fantasy and science fiction literature. He discussed and demonstrated the various materials used in his figures. In addition to the gourds and leaves, he uses Almaloy wire for the armature (or skeleton) of his figures, as well as plumber’s putty, sculpting clay and polyfoam

Kevin is holding a work in progress during his demonstration. Note the wire armature skeleton, the plumber’s putty on its “bones”, and the gourd that is its head. Clay has been added and sculpted to the gourd to give it facial features.
As part of his demo, Kevin added clay to this gourd, then used sculpting techniques to give the face more features.
Using acrylics, Kevin applied an undercoat of paint, and then added highlights to emphasize facial features for this sculpture.

Here is an example of a completed work from Kevin’s workshop. This figure is freestanding and is approximately 50″ tall. In addition to sculpting and constructing the figure, Kevin also created the costume and props using natural and man-made materials and fabrics.
