Decorating For The Holiday Season

Norma Nikkola (l) and Barb Arnold (r) helped decorate the FAA Gallery for the Holiday Fine Art and Craft Sale. They did a wonderful job putting the ornaments and lights on the Christmas tree. They also were among the many members who created items for the Sale. The Sale was held the first two weekends in December. The weather was certainly appropriate, as we had unusually early snow in our part of Ohio this year.

SWEET CORN FESTIVAL WRAPUP

Thanks to everyone who participated in work for the Sweet Corn Festival this past year. Thanks also to Kohls Department Store for their donation of $1000 because five of their employees volunteered to work in support of this charity. We cleared $13,211.77 (every penny counts). This is the largest amount we have ever made on the Festival and will go a long way to supporting our many charities, such as the two $500 scholarships for college-bound art students and $300 to the Lions Club for the Fairborn Christmas Project, which awards $25 per family plus $10 for each person in the family for use at Krogers or Sav-A-Lot for groceries.   —Submitted by Sue Red

Highlights of the November 2013 Meeting

Fairborn Art Association’s November 5, 2013 meeting began with the presentation of a longevity membership award to Barbara Rich who has been a member for 44 years.  It was announced that the soup and art show was very successful, raising over $1300 for the backpack food program for local needy school children.  There is talk about of a second such event next year.  The annual members’ holiday sale has been announced for Saturdays and Sundays December 7, 8, 14, and 15.  Saturday hours are 10-4 and Sunday hours are 1-4.  The public is welcome to shop from the wide variety of handmade gift items at affordable prices.

After lovely refreshments, local artist Trish McKinney began a demonstration of a new technique she is working with that involves using layers of pattern in her paintings.  She achieves this by selecting two photos having some personal meaning.   Using two pieces of transfer paper and graphite paper she draws the image of one photo on top of the other on a full sheet of watercolor paper.  She begins with the image on the transfer paper so that she is able to use the image again easily.

She uses Dr. Martin colored ink and Golden high flow acrylic paint in thin applications as she slowly builds up the two superimposed images.  The results are a beautiful predominant image with an equally interesting secondary image.  The finished product is much richer and more meaningful than a more traditional representation.
