 APRIL SPEAKER—KEVIN BUNTIN

Needing to find a replacement for Judy Belvo, our scheduled demoing artist for April’s meeting, I found myself making phone calls on the eve of St. Patrick’s day only to snare a leprechaun for us for the evening! Kevin Buntin is Irish but lives and works in Troy, Ohio. When I phoned him he was heading into his studio to work on some of his sculptures, which sounded like a hazardous adventure for him.  After our conversation, reading his biography, and viewing some of  his work online, I envision his creations coming alive in his studio and having all sorts of adventures with Kevin, resulting in his bumps, cuts and bruises that his wife thinks are the result of equipment misuse.

I invite you to join us Tuesday, April 1, as Kevin takes us into his creative process as he shares his views of the natural world through his work with figurative sculpture and storytelling. And at the end of the evening see if you too think he is a leprechaun. The following is a professional biography the artist uses.  At our meeting I will share some of the biography the leprechaun emailed me.      …Submitted by Dora Lawson

The March meeting of FAA took place on Tuesday evening, March 4, 2014. We were all glad of the opportunity to meet once again after a long (!) winter, especially since we had not met in February due to a winter storm. The gallery had on display artwork from the Greene County Council On Aging. The FAA membership were able to view the work of Greene County seniors before the regular meeting. It was a treat to see such wonderful work. Several of our members participated in the show.  FAA member Anna Mae Brown  was honored for being a member for over 50 years! We are happy to have such  dedicated members as Anna Mae.

Leonard Williams was our featured speaker for the evening. He spoke and demonstrated his work in both watercolor and casein for us. Leonard, best known for his vibrant watercolor scenes, concentrates on realistic depicitions of nature and landscapes. The viewer is invited to become part of the setting while enjoying his work. During September 2013 he traveled in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, taking thousands of photos and producing numerous watercolor sketches, which he shared with the FAA members. He has drawn inspiration from the infinite world of nature, and is passionate about the American West. Leonard is primarily a self-taught artist who has refined his innate ability by attending workshops offered by many nationally known artists, and by studying at the yearly Pro-Art Workshop in Big Timber, Montana. He is a founding member of the Town and Country Fine Art Gallery, and also teaches watercolor at the Rosewood Art Center in Kettering, Ohio.

A memorial service will be held at Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church, 4417 Bigger Road, Kettering at 10 am on February 1st. We can celebrate the many wonderful times FAA was privileged to observe his talents.

We have had our cold and blustery days, but I would remind you that the art scene is stirring again, with Dayton’s First Friday with DVAC, the Cannery at its new location at the corner of St. Clair and 4th street, DSPS, and Dora reminds me of the Gallery 510 in the Oregon District. If you’ve never visited there, you will also find great food in that busy little district. Also K12 has moved to a new location that is visible from Patterson Blvd and coming off Rt 35. Those young children are transforming the outside of that old building. All those places are easy to navigate. Call a friend, and go on an excursion!

But First Come Here:  The time is quickly approaching for our first meeting of this New Year, the first Tuesday, February 4th. Don’t forget to turn your calendar. It will be a beautiful beginning with our guest, Bonnie Kuntz. So do come along, bring a friend or two or more, and celebrate with fellowship, good food, and a terrific program – sign in starting at 6:30 pm. The Board will meet at 6 pm. The meeting starts at 7 pm. Blessings,

Sue Brezine
President

FEBRUARY SPEAKER—BONNIE KUNTZ

Bonnie Kuntz will be demonstrating a paraffin wax resist of a landscape, including some water. The palette will be limited, so shading will be important. This technique has had some success in juried shows and also in sales. Bonnie remarked, “I look forward to sharing it with you.”   Bonnie Kuntz can be reached by email at [email protected]  A bio for Bonnie is attached to the February Newsletter on our website www.fairbornart.org                                                                                                     Submitted by Dora Lawson

HOLIDAY FINE ART & CRAFT SALE

Robert and I would like to thank all of the members who worked so hard on our Holiday Fine Art & Craft Show, decorating and setting up the gallery in a timely fashion. We would like to also  thank the members who came out and set the gallery on those cold and snowy days.  We could not have this wonderful event without  all of your help. And finally, to remember the members who participated in the sale! This year we sold over $1400.00, which was very good considering the very  bad weather  we had. We all did a great job and are looking forward to next year. Thank you everyone.                                                                                                                        Submitted by gayle Beireis

HOLIDAY DECORATIONS

Robert and I would like to give a big thank you to Barbara Arnold for taking care of the FAA Christmas tree every year. Most of you do not realize that she was the one who started the hand-made decorations for our tree. She has been the one who so carefully puts it up and takes it down along with help from other members every year. The tree gives our gallery that little added look of warmth  at our Christmas party and show. Besides, we need it to play our game at the party. Thanks Barb.                                                                                                      Submitted by gayle Beireis

Dear Friends of X*ACT

The world has just become a less interesting place. We are sad to report that one of X*ACT’s Founding Directors, Miss Olivia Gladman, passed away quietly last evening (January 21). To us, she was an actor, director, muse, and an articulate voice for the arts in our community. She will be sorely missed. A Memorial service is planned at the theater at 2 pm on Monday January 27. More details will be sent out as they become available.
