Happy New Year Members and Patrons,
It is hoped that your Holidays were filled with pleasant times with family and friends and everyone is able to keep warm, cozy, and healthy. On December 20th our dear friend and fabulous artist, Homer Hacker, age 96, died. You are all invited to celebrate his life’s work at a gathering at DAI from 5:30 to 8:30 pm on Friday, January 31st. A memorial service will be held at Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church, 4417 Bigger Road, Kettering at 10 am on February 1st. We can celebrate the many wonderful times FAA was privileged to observe his talents.
We have had our cold and blustery days, but I would remind you that the art scene is stirring again, with Dayton’s First Friday with DVAC, the Cannery at its new location at the corner of St. Clair and 4th street, DSPS, and Dora reminds me of the Gallery 510 in the Oregon District. If you’ve never visited there, you will also find great food in that busy little district. Also K12 has moved to a new location that is visible from Patterson Blvd and coming off Rt 35. Those young children are transforming the outside of that old building. All those places are easy to navigate. Call a friend, and go on an excursion!
But First Come Here: The time is quickly approaching for our first meeting of this New Year, the first Tuesday, February 4th. Don’t forget to turn your calendar. It will be a beautiful beginning with our guest, Bonnie Kuntz. So do come along, bring a friend or two or more, and celebrate with fellowship, good food, and a terrific program – sign in starting at 6:30 pm. The Board will meet at 6 pm. The meeting starts at 7 pm. Blessings,
Sue Brezine

FEBRUARY SPEAKER—BONNIE KUNTZ
Bonnie Kuntz will be demonstrating a paraffin wax resist of a landscape, including some water. The palette will be limited, so shading will be important. This technique has had some success in juried shows and also in sales. Bonnie remarked, “I look forward to sharing it with you.” Bonnie Kuntz can be reached by email at [email protected] A bio for Bonnie is attached to the February Newsletter on our website www.fairbornart.org Submitted by Dora Lawson

HOLIDAY FINE ART & CRAFT SALE
Robert and I would like to thank all of the members who worked so hard on our Holiday Fine Art & Craft Show, decorating and setting up the gallery in a timely fashion. We would like to also thank the members who came out and set the gallery on those cold and snowy days. We could not have this wonderful event without all of your help. And finally, to remember the members who participated in the sale! This year we sold over $1400.00, which was very good considering the very bad weather we had. We all did a great job and are looking forward to next year. Thank you everyone. Submitted by gayle Beireis
SWEET CORN FESTIVAL
The Sweet Corn Festival Committee is looking for recipes to include in a booklet for distribution at the Sweet Corn Festival in August. Recipes must include sweet corn as an ingredient. You may also mail them to the FAA P.O. Box 1231, Fairborn, OH 45324. Thank you. Submitted by Robert Beireis
HOLIDAY DECORATIONS
Robert and I would like to give a big thank you to Barbara Arnold for taking care of the FAA Christmas tree every year. Most of you do not realize that she was the one who started the hand-made decorations for our tree. She has been the one who so carefully puts it up and takes it down along with help from other members every year. The tree gives our gallery that little added look of warmth at our Christmas party and show. Besides, we need it to play our game at the party. Thanks Barb. Submitted by gayle Beireis

Dear Friends of X*ACT
The world has just become a less interesting place. We are sad to report that one of X*ACT’s Founding Directors, Miss Olivia Gladman, passed away quietly last evening (January 21). To us, she was an actor, director, muse, and an articulate voice for the arts in our community. She will be sorely missed. A Memorial service is planned at the theater at 2 pm on Monday January 27. More details will be sent out as they become available.

2013 Christmas Party

The FAA membership enjoyed good fellowship and a good time at the Holiday Celebration on Tuesday, December 3, 2013.

Our “Santa Claus”, Warren Brown distributed gifts during the Holiday celebration. The hat he is wearing was the hit of the party when it started dancing on his head!

Clarice Moore opened a package containing this snowman. Unfortunately for her, she didn’t keep him for long.

Barbara and Irene “womanned” the sales table during the pre-sale of members art and craft items at the Holiday gathering.
Decorating For The Holiday Season
Norma Nikkola (l) and Barb Arnold (r) helped decorate the FAA Gallery for the Holiday Fine Art and Craft Sale. They did a wonderful job putting the ornaments and lights on the Christmas tree. They also were among the many members who created items for the Sale. The Sale was held the first two weekends in December. The weather was certainly appropriate, as we had unusually early snow in our part of Ohio this year.

Soup and Art Finale

Cathy Jones of the Maple Avenue Church of God in Fairborn, Ohio received a check in the amount of $1500 from proceeds of the Soup and Art Show held on Saturday, October 26, 2013. Ms. Jones received the check on Saturday, November 9, 2013. Ms. Jones is the founder of the Church of God’s Backpack program, which feeds children in the Fairborn area who may otherwise go without food. The Backpack program feeds up to 100 children at its weekly food program, and also sends food home in backpacks so the children in need will have additional food. The Soup and Art Show was able to raise the money through proceeds of the sale of donated bowls, tee shirts, donated art work, and corporate funds. Organizers Clarice Moore, Mayumi Keifer, Steve Keifer, and Dora Lawson hope to hold future events in order to continue support for the Backpack program. Photo by Dora Lawson.
Highlights of the November 2013 Meeting
Fairborn Art Association’s November 5, 2013 meeting began with the presentation of a longevity membership award to Barbara Rich who has been a member for 44 years. It was announced that the soup and art show was very successful, raising over $1300 for the backpack food program for local needy school children. There is talk about of a second such event next year. The annual members’ holiday sale has been announced for Saturdays and Sundays December 7, 8, 14, and 15. Saturday hours are 10-4 and Sunday hours are 1-4. The public is welcome to shop from the wide variety of handmade gift items at affordable prices.
After lovely refreshments, local artist Trish McKinney began a demonstration of a new technique she is working with that involves using layers of pattern in her paintings. She achieves this by selecting two photos having some personal meaning. Using two pieces of transfer paper and graphite paper she draws the image of one photo on top of the other on a full sheet of watercolor paper. She begins with the image on the transfer paper so that she is able to use the image again easily.
She uses Dr. Martin colored ink and Golden high flow acrylic paint in thin applications as she slowly builds up the two superimposed images. The results are a beautiful predominant image with an equally interesting secondary image. The finished product is much richer and more meaningful than a more traditional representation.

Trish McKinney Demo at November Meeting

Trish McKinney, nationally known artist and graphic designer, presented her “Layers of Understanding – Creating Layers of Pattern and Meaning” demonstration at the meeting of the Fairborn Art Association on Tuesday, November 6, 2013. She discussed the art of storytelling in a painting by interweaving layers of understanding to create an emotional connection to the viewer. She demonstrated her method of telling a story through the technique of layering patterns over a figurative composition using mixed watermedia. Ms. McKinney has exhibited nationally and won numerous awards, including Ohio Watercolor Society, Western Ohio Watercolor Society, Springfield (Ohio) Art Museum, National Watercolor Society, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society International Exhibition, and many others. She has also had her work published in a number of publications and is represented in galleries in Ohio and other states. Her work is included in corporate collections both locally and internationally. Photos by Robert Beireis.
