MAY SPEAKER—TOM FRANCESCONI

WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP with Tom Francesconi, AWS, NWS, TWS
The Fairborn Art Association is sponsoring a watercolor workshop with Tom Francesconi May 2 through May 5, 2016 (Monday through Thursday), 9 am to 4 pm daily. The workshop will be held at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery, located in the rear of the Fairborn Senior Apartment Building, 221 N. Central Avenue, Fairborn, OH. Tom’s energetic teaching style and his passion for painting combine to create a workshop experience that is enjoyable and informative. Any artist looking to break free of a careful, timid painting process will find Tom’s direct and representational approach very inspirational. Utilizing his ability to clearly explain visual concepts, Tom will share his approach and methods for painting bold and interpretive watercolors. Within this process, students will learn how to create stronger, more effective visual statements. Each morning will begin with a discussion covering various topics and culminating in a demonstration that allows participants to see how Tom approaches a work from start to finish. Subject matter may include landscapes, street scenes with people, and the clothed figure. Ample opportunity is provided for everyone to paint with individual direction/guidance a priority. Each day will end with a class critique to afford students the opportunity to learn from the works of others. Tom welcomes all painters regardless of experience. For more information about Tom, visit his website at www.tomfrancesconi.com. The fee for this workshop is $230 for FAA members, $250 for non-members. ANNE ABGOTT WORKSHOP
From November 1 to November 3, 2016, the Fairborn Art Association will be hosting Anne Abgott for a 3-day workshop. I recently took a class from her in Florida and found her to be an outstanding teacher with great ideas and innovations to bring a colorful, award winning touch to your watercolor painting. Cost for the 3-day classes will be $275.00. A $40.00 nonrefundable deposit is required to hold your place in the workshop. A minimum of 10 students is required. A registration form is attached.

Anne began painting in oils as a child and was mentored by Alexander Luke, one of the premier Canadian artists. She moved to Florida in 1998 and began working in watercolor. She is very influenced by the light and color she finds in Florida, and she has honed her skills with many, many hours of painting. She has found an art-rich environment in Florida and feels that the encouragement and friendship of the local artists are a big part of her success. She is an acclaimed mentor and true master teacher. She has been an “art mom” to her students, and many have gone on to become accomplished and award-winning artists themselves. She has conducted over 100 workshops and is in demand as a juror for many exhibitions. Her latest contract is with the Watercolor Art Society-Houston, or WAS-H, for a workshop and judging their upcoming National Show in 2016. Anne has achieved Signature status in seven National Watercolor Societies, not including the holy grail for watercolorists: AWS and NWS. You are invited to visit her website at www.anneabgott.com for examples of her work and a more extensive resume.

For additional information about this workshop, please contact Pat Dunker at [email protected].

New Flooring in Gallery

Revised to include new information on floor maintenance.

New flooring was installed in our Gallery in February. We no longer have to worry about spills on the carpet since we no longer have carpet. The new flooring is a super-vinyl tile that looks like wood. Specifically it is called Northern Timbers (021) and was installed by Sexton Flooring.

With this type of flooring we do have to use care to prevent damage such as scrapes and stains. First, DO NOT drag the tables across the floor. The table legs can scratch the finish of the vinyl flooring. Pick them up to move them. Get someone to help you carry a table if you are going to move it or while putting the smaller tables away for storage. The larger tables can be left in place after the Gallery is used; this will prevent having to take them down to store them.

Also, check each leg on your chair and be sure there are rubber caps. We don’t want to gouge the floor with exposed legs. If a tip is missing from a chair, place the chair in the storage area away from other chairs and place a note on it.

If you spill something on the new floor, it’s okay. Just clean it up immediately. DO NOT use products such as Pine-Sol, Bleach, Clorox Soft Scrub, Fabuloso, Mop & Glo, Mr. Clean, Murphy’s Oil Soap, etc. These products will damage the finish on the flooring and create unsatisfactory conditions. Just use clean water. If there appears to be a stain, there is some “Neutral Cleaner” in the supply room by the kitchen that may be used. If the stain persists, notify Roger so he can investigate and get the stain removed. If you are using a medium that may leave a stain, cover the floor under your area with a plastic sheet.

Please sharpen any pencils over a waste container and pick up any shavings or lead that end up on the floor. At the end of each day (which could be 1:00 pm.), after activities are complete, use the dust mop in the supply room to sweep the floor. This will prevent scratches from any debris left behind. DO NOT use the vacuum on the new floor. The brushes in the vacuum will scratch the vinyl flooring.

Thank you for your cooperation. It’s important we all work to keep our gallery looking its best.

The next FAA meeting is at 7 pm on April 5 with the Board meeting at 6 pm.

While avoiding photorealism, his painting style captures the essence and emotion of the subject while involving the viewers’ imagination in its interpretation. The choice of subject matter is diverse ranging from seascapes and landscapes to still lifes and portraits. An avid sailor, his work is often based on nautical themes which frequently are taken from his Great Lakes and Chesapeake sailing experiences. In a recent review the Columbus Dispatch characterized his work as having “the soft gauzy look that is often characteristic of watercolor but it also has a strong graphic quality.” A selection of his paintings and drawings can be found on his website at: http://charleswrowland.zenfolio.com .

Trish McKinney gave a demonstration of re-discovering the beauty in discarded artwork in her presentation “Rebirth & Re-imagine”. Trish has found that an artist can re-use work that may have been set aside as not meeting the standards set for oneself.  She uses mixed media techniques to turn rejected paintings into something new and exciting, to reinvent the surface of a painting into a “playground of inspiration”. In this way, nothing need be wasted in regards to one’s artwork.

She used a discarded painting as an example of her process. She uses stencils of her own design to apply patterns on top of a painting. She then applies gesso over the stencil(s), spreading the gesso over the surface with a plastic card (such as a credit card) and a scratch tool or a paper towel to provide texture. She will on occasion, cut up a large work into smaller pieces and then use this technique. She uses Golden Fluid Acrylic as a medium, using the acrylic paint like watercolor. “Those who look for beauty will find it”, even in trash – your discarded artwork. Trish’s “Blessings Collection” has been developed using this idea of rebirth, and is now her most popular collection.

F.A.A. members met on Tuesday, February 2, (Groundhog Day!) to see a demonstration by F.A.A. Vice-President Louise Jackson. Her demo involved the use of stencils, liquid watercolor paint to create artwork on Yupo paper. Louise, who has been painting since 1965, is the author of 23 painting books. She has taught in the U.S., Canada, Italy, Argentina, and Japan. She is a signature member of W.O.W.S., D.S.P.S., and is a Master Decorative Artist.

During her presentation, she discussed the advantages of using Yupo. It is an easy material on which to paint, and one of its qualities is that mistakes are easily corrected by wiping clean with Windex. She showed how she uses various stencils and liquid watercolor paint to create colorful paintings, which she seals with Krylon Crystal Clear sealant when the work is complete.

Dear Members, and Patrons,

Winter has finally arrived. I have been indoors a lot and am working on finishing some art work that needs some help. This is a great time for painting snow scenes. Everyone needs to get their paints or crafts out and do something creative with the snow. Our next meeting is on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at 7 pm. Our speaker/demo person will be our own Vice President, Louise Jackson. She teaches both nationally and internationally and will be doing a liquid watercolor on Yupo. (See Louise’s bio below.) Fun, fun, fun is the only way to explain it, so please come to the meeting, enjoy the food and socialize with your fellow artists. The Board will meet at 6 pm.

Sandy Kinnamon, AWS
President

BAD WEATHER MEETING CANCELLATION
We will follow recommendations of the media weather reports. When they say travel would be dangerous, we will cancel our scheduled meeting. The Board will communicate with each other by phone and you will be notified by email as soon as a decision is reached. Be sure to check your email before starting out if the weather is bad. If you do not have email access, please call one of the Board members or a member you know who has email access.

To register, please send a non-refundable deposit of $40 along with the registration form to Yuki Hall, 206 E. Holmes St. Urbana, IL 61801. Make checks payable to Fairborn Art Association. The final payment must be made by March 31, 2016. For questions or more information, Call Yuki at (937) 426-7229 or e-mail [email protected]. A flyer and registration form is available on our website at www.fairbornart.org.

IN THE GALLERY
Members: I would like to thank all who came in to work and/or set up the Holiday Fine Art and Craft Show this year. Again you did a great job; it was a another good year. It saddens me to say this, but this was my last year to do the Show. Because of Robert’s working a fulltime job I do not have the time or his help for the show. This Spring will also be the last Spring Show that I’ll be working for the same reason. So if you are interested in wanting to do this job please let me or Sandy Kinnamon know. I’ll be happy to help get you started.

Also if there is any member who would like to have Member’s Show in our FAA Gallery please let me know. There are a few spots left for 2016. …Submitted by gayle Beireis

I would like to let you know that I no longer want to do the Photographer/website, and the Historian jobs; they go hand in hand. I would help you to get started, they are very easy jobs. If you are interested, please get ahold of me or Sandy Kinnamon. …Submitted by Robert Beireis

On Thursdays, the group formerly instructed by Misuk Goltz meets from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm for open Paint In sessions. We help each other by informal visits to see how our paintings are progressing. We always have coffee or tea and breakfast treats available. Sometimes we have a demo on a new method or form of art. F.A.A. Christmas Party December 1, 2015

F.A.A. held its annual Christmas Party on Tuesday December 1, 2015 at the Gallery. A buffet of holiday goodies, drinks and good fellowship was enjoyed by all present. President Sandy Kinnamon invited “Santa” Warren Brown, ably assisted by Head Elf Loren Red in distributing the gifts during the Holiday game and gift exchange during the party. Everyone who attends brings a small holiday gift and places it under the Christmas tree, and takes a number from the greeter. “Santa” calls everyone by their number to the tree to take a gift and open it for all to see. As the game proceeds and each gift is opened, the participants may “steal” a particularly attractive gift from a previious recipient, who is then encouraged to either “steal” another gift, or return to the tree for another package. Lots of laughter and silliness ensue. A fun time was had by all!
