Hello All,

Congratulations to our new Board for 2021-22:

President – Linda Brandenburg              Corresponding Secretary – Lisa Becker
Vice President – Carol Edsall                   Recording Secretary – Sheryl Scott
Treasurer – Roger Browning

The election was a unanimous voice vote at our May 4 meeting. They will be installed at our June 1 meeting. Please welcome them and lend them all your support. This past year has reminded us of the importance of working as a team, with everyone pitching in to help. Congratulations to the new Board!

Yes, we are having the June 1 meeting, but it will be different than the past. There will be light refreshments, and FAA will provide them. By light, I mean plates and utensils will not be required. Everything will be served with a toothpick to reduce contamination, and the beverage will be individual bottles of water. We are planning on serving food provided by FAA and having some people sit in the courtyard outside the Gallery, so dress according to the weather forecast. Masks will still be required for those who are not fully vaccinated, and number of persons inside will be limited to 35 at a time.  This should give everyone time to circulate and vote on paintings for the People’s Choice Awards, and look at the artwork of the scholarship winners. Those winners will be announced, as will the Sweet Corn Festival King and Queen. The outgoing Board will be recognized and the incoming Board will be installed. After the votes are tallied, the winners of the People’s Choice Awards will be announced and prizes awarded. The evening will end after that. Everyone with paintings in the show must take them home that night, or make arrangements with the Show Chairs to pick them up at a different time.

I also want to announce the Fairborn Art Association Scholarship winners:  Sebastien DeLeon from Riverside High School, Avory Mayenschein from Greenon High School, and Miriah Taylor from Greenon High School. Congratulations to these graduates as they embark on their art careers.

It has been my great pleasure to serve as your President these past three years. I have come to know so many more members and realize what a great organization we have. I will still be an ex-officio member of the Board, but I will be there to support our new President Linda Brandenburg as she leads us into our future.

See you Tuesday, June 1 beginning at 6:30 p.m. (so you can begin voting early before the actual meeting begins).  Remember to sign up to volunteer for the Sweet Corn Festival!

Billie Dickson, (Outgoing) President

There will be no need to register for the June meeting. Also, remember that membership dues are due by the June 1st meeting.                                           … Submitted by Debbie Cosenza

Our workshop this year in November features Lian Quan Zhen. Lian was here several years ago with a full class who raved about his teaching so we are bringing him back. He will be teaching Chinese painting as well as his traditional methods. Many famous artists have a background in Chinese painting, such as Mary Whyte and Jean Hanes, so I’m sure all will learn a lot and really enjoy his class. B-W GREENWAY DISC GOLF TOURNMENT FUND RAISER CALL FOR ARTISTS

Disc golf is similar to regular golf, but played instead with a small frisbee that is thrown into a metal basket. Located at the Handyman Ace Hardware course at Fairborn Community Park Saturday June 26th from 8 am – 5 pm, participants will get to enjoy exploring this beautiful piece of nature preserved by B-W Greenway while enjoying the day’s activities. We’re looking for local artists who want to be inspired by our conservation mission, and the disc golf theme of this event to create something to be used as a trophy to give to division winners. Example shown was a ceramic bowl. Contact [email protected] or call Piper R. Fernwey by June 1st at 740-403-2002 with questions.

JUROR’S STATEMENT

I loved this opportunity to be a juror in the FAA show. It has been more than 5 years since I left Ohio and I was excited to see the new ideas and techniques that were exhibited in the show. The criteria I go by when judging art work is simple but deciding who to receive awards was difficult because there are so many good paintings to consider.

An aesthetically pleasing piece of art with a unique way of telling a story usually incorporates a good use of the elements of design and art principles. Adding good craftsmanship and presentation (framing and lighting) is sure to attract a juror’s attention. Among the chosen paintings in this show, some exhibited excellent use of color or value contrast, some have subjects that tell a story for the viewer to enjoy, some adopted interesting textures, and so on.

I have to admit, no matter what pieces I ultimately chose for award, the choices are subjective; conditioned by my art making experiences, and these experiences influenced my choices. I hope you all keep enjoying painting and think of an art show as a way of sharing your genuine feelings and ideas without the need for acceptance and reward.

Misuk Goltz – Juror

This show will be open to the public on Sundays, May 9, 16, and 23 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Please come and bring your family and friends.

“LEADERSHIP”

Leadership is not about being in charge, it is about taking care of those in your charge. And when we take care of our people, our people will take care of us.” Anon

As of tonight, April 18, 2021, no one has agreed to take on the role of President for the 2021-22 year. Several have been asked, all have reason to say no. My term ends May 31, 2021. The first two years were pretty easy, the last was made more challenging because of the pandemic. It looks like things will ease up and this coming year shouldn’t be too tough, but it is difficult to have a successful organization without a leader. Even with the great Board that is in place and will be returning to their roles, it is difficult for a body without a head to work well. Please call Carol Collett (or any Board member) and say you will step up and take your turn. I will be there as an advisor. Show what FAA means to you. Voting for the incoming Board takes place at our May meeting.

Also in May, the Member Fine Art Show will happen, and the two Misuk Goltz workshops will take place. Information on those is elsewhere in the Newsletter.

Dues are payable by June 1. You may pay those when you drop off your paintings for the Member show. Also in June is the year end celebration on Tuesday, June 1, announcement of the Sweet Corn Festival King and Queen, awarding of the scholarships for 3 graduating seniors, and the People’s Choice Voting and Awards.

The May meeting is Tuesday, May 4, at 7 p.m. 6:30 to 7:00 is social time. Again, reservations must be made by emailing Debbie Cosenza. Masks and social distancing are still required, so seating is limited, and refreshments will not be available.

Billie Dickson, President

2021 FAIRBORN SWEETCORN FESTIVAL: AUGUST 21 & 22

On Friday April 16, I was informed by the Green County Health Department that we have a green light to go forward with the August 21-22, 2021 Fairborn Sweetcorn Festival. Great News!! We will be expected to ask attendees to exercise social distancing and wear a mask. Also, we are asked to keep food tables 6 foot apart or use a barrier between tables. These suggestions could be relaxed further if the pandemic has wound down by then.

What this means to you, our members, is we need you to volunteer for the tasks that are necessary to carry out a successful event.

Attached is a form to guide you in selecting tasks that best fits your capabilities and availability. Please include phone # or e-mail so we can contact you for verification.

Thanks in advance for your consideration for this important event!!               …Submitted by Warren Brown

PASSING OF INSTRUCTOR AND AUTHOR

I just found out about the passing of a former national watercolor and collage instructor from California who taught at least 5 workshops at the Fairborn Art Association throughout the years, authored 18 art instruction books and was an internationally recognized instructor.   His name was Gerald Brommer, N.W.S.  When I was the workshop chairman for the F.A.A. I invited him to come and teach a workshop about every 3 or 4 years.  The last time he came he brought his lovely and talented wife, Georgia.  He was about 83 at that time; but still an excellent, kind and thoughtful artist/instructor to all his beloved students.  He was born in 1927 and died on November 3, 2020, at 93 years old.  He was truly amazing.  He even co-judged the 2020 N.W.S. exhibition in California.  Possibly some of the long-time F.A.A. members will remember him.  He will definitely be missed in the art world.                                                  … Submitted by Jane Trame

NOVEMBER WORKSHOP WITH LIAN QUAN ZHEN

It’s time for summer, then our new workshop this year in November which features Lian Quan Zhen.

He started sketching and painting in his childhood and continued as a hobby while practicing medicine as a family physician in Canton Province, China. After immigrating to the US in 1985, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree from University of California at Berkeley in 1992 and a Master of Architecture Degree from MIT in 1996. He has had many shows in the US, Hong Kong and China and developed an international following. His paintings hang in numerous institutional and private collections including at the MIT Museum which has collected 14 of his paintings. Lian Quan Zhen is a sought-after watercolor and Chinese painting artist and teacher in the US and abroad. He is one of the most popular authors of North Light Books.

His art teaching credentials include at the University of California at Berkeley where he taught watercolor outdoor sketching for 8 years; watercolor and Chinese painting workshops nationwide in the US, and other countries in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, China, South Africa and Australia. (See http://www.lianspainting.com/workshopss.htm for additional information on his workshops and a list of art supplies.) Also, Lian has been an invited juror for California, Colorado, New Mexico, Georgia, Arizona and Kentucky Watercolor Societies’ exhibitions and other local shows. His paintings have been featured in magazines such as Watercolor 94 Spring, Splash4, Collectors (Hong Kong) and books

of Landscape on Watercolor (UK), Finding Your Visual Voice, and Painter’s Quick Reference books by North Light Books: Flowers and Blooms, Dogs and Cats, Birds and Butterflies, Landscapes, and Drawing and Painting Animals – the Essential Guide.

Happy Spring Everyone!

Fairborn Art Association is active again!

April 6 will be our third meeting of the year; our workshops with Misuk Goltz and our Member Fine Art Show will be in May. We will introduce our Scholarship Winners and the Sweet Corn Festival Queen and King in June, as well as vote on our Popular Choice Awards, and introduce the 2020-22 Board. In July, the BW Greenway will hold their Landscapes 2021 Art Exhibition. Then on August 21 & 22 we will hold the Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival, which will provide a community service to Fairborn and solidify our financial security for another year. It feels so good to be able to spend so much quality time with our FAA friends again.  There is more information available on these events elsewhere in the newsletter.

Dues are payable by June 1 – please make sure you download and complete the Membership Form to submit with your dues (yes, even if you’ve done it before). Please indicate the ways you can help out Fairborn Art Association on the form.  This information is critical as we look for people who have talents that are needed to run this fine organization going forward.

There are some changes in the way we are conducting the Member Fine Art Show and the Popular Choice Voting in June.  These are spelled out in the Prospectus for the show, so please read it carefully.

In May we will be voting on the Board positions for 2021-22.  Everyone is encouraged to participate as a volunteer Board member or Committee Chair.  If there is a position you think you would like to hold, please speak up.  The past few years we have presented a slate of officers to vote on, but that is because we have not had members step up and give us the opportunity to actually make a choice for a candidate.

Our April speaker will be Tim Langenderfer, whose presentation will focus on oil painting.

If you follow Fairborn Art Association on Facebook, you can view the demonstrations for the February and March meetings.  Thanks to Connie and Jim Gifford for making these available to us!

The meeting is April 6, 2021, at 7:00 p.m. The 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. time slot is social time.  Again, reservations must be made by emailing Debbie Cosenza.  Masks and social distancing are still required, so seating is limited, and refreshments will not be available.

Cheap Joe asks, “Why not add people in your artwork?  Are you afraid because you can’t draw figures?  Look at van Gogh, all his figures were ill proportioned.  And how much are his paintings worth?”

Hello FAA Friends,

Here we are heading into March.  We are halfway between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox and heading in the right direction.  People are starting to get their vaccines for Covid-19, hospitalizations are down, we will soon be able to have more activities outside – it feels like we are moving from a dark place into the light.  I hope all of you are feeling your spirits being lifted.

Our March meeting will be on Tuesday, March 2 at 7:00 p.m.  The Board meets from 5:30 to 6:30 in the meeting space, so please plan to arrive after 6:30. (If you do arrive early, you will get to see what the Board does, which isn’t such a bad thing.  You may even get recruited to fill a position. ?) Our speaker is Amy Gantt, artist and owner of Lula Bell in Oakwood, who will be talking about her art in creating cards.

We are in need of someone to take over the Facebook page of the Sweet Corn Festival.  This is one of the many jobs that Lori Luckner did, and will be pretty active for the next few months.  Contact Warren Brown to let him know you are interested.  The Sweet Corn Festival is planned for August 21 and 22, and we are hopeful for a successful festival this year.

As usual, you will need to reserve your space to attend the meeting.  Please email Debbie Cosenza to do that. Our space will be cleaned prior to the meeting. Masks are required. There will be no refreshments, and if you bring a snack for yourself, please remove everything you bring in when you leave.  Chairs will be spaced 6 feet apart.  We still need to practice keeping everyone safe.

Cheap Joe says, “Enthusiasm is the single most important element in your talent bag.”

2021 FAIRBORN SWEETCORN FESTIVAL

We are starting the planning for the 39th Fairborn Sweetcorn Festival, which will be held August 21-22, 2021. We need a person who is knowledgeable in Facebook page maintenance to take over the sweetcorn festival Facebook page and keep it up to date-so if you have interest and the ability, get in touch with Warren Brown [email protected] and he can get you started. Warren has attempted to update the page but he feels we need to have a person who is familiar with this type of activity!

Keep the August 21 & 22 sweetcorn festival weekend in your plans to be available to help us pull this off—remember, this is our fundraising activity to keep our association going!! Thank you in advance for your consideration.

MAY JOURNALING & PORTRAITURE WORKSHOPS: May 3-5 and May 6 & 7, 2021

Misuk Goltz grew up in South Korea and moved to the US in 1980. She studied art history and psychology along with art therapy. After her studies, she worked as a psychiatric counselor in hospitals until she retired in 2008. When she retired she began to paint. Using watercolors, she mostly paints people, trying to capture the unique and intriguing story that each individual carries within them. Misuk has studied with many nationally known artists, mostly watercolor painters. And she particularly enjoyed taking classes from local artists in the Dayton area. She is a signature member of the Ohio Watercolor Society and her works have been accepted into the National Watercolor Society International and Member’s juried shows, the Ohio Watercolor Society and the California Watercolor Association. She has also participated in many other juried art shows and has won numerous awards for her watercolor paintings. She has been teaching watercolor painting classes and workshops since 2011. She was involved with Fairborn Art Association artists for many years until she moved to California in 2016. Since 2015 Misuk has been keeping illustrated journals. In her journals, she has expanded her subjects to include landscapes, animals and everything else that she comes in contact with as she journeys through her life. She has traveled worldwide and recently returned from an 8-month trip to Mongolia and other countries in the Far East. Her experiences during her travels inspire her art journaling. Misuk has been teaching watercolor painting classes, workshops and art journaling workshops in California. She is happy and excited to come back to her former hometown and help others discover the joy of sketching and painting in a journal book; keeping a diary with sketches and paintings on a daily basis.

For registration information, contact Pat Dunker [email protected] or go to the Fairborn Art Association website at https://staging.fairbornart.org to print out a copy of the registration form.

Hello, and welcome to 2021!

After some time off, it feels good to be getting back to meetings and art demos and looking forward to the new year.  It may still look a lot like the past year, but at least it is looking ahead.

We will have our member meeting on February 2 at 6:30 p.m.  Connie Gifford will be presenting a demo of painting on YUPO.  Connie has had great success with this sometimes difficult substrate, and she will share her techniques with the group. The meeting will again require a reservation with our Membership Chair Debbie Cosenza.  You can find her email in your directory.  Masks and social distancing are required and there will be no refreshments provided.

We intend to continue with our programs as scheduled, and hope residents of our area stay healthy enough for that to happen.

The first meeting of the Sweet Corn Festival Committee will take place this month.  It takes several months of planning to make this very important event happen, and I hope some of you will come forward to help out.  Administrative help is really needed to take over some of the activities provided by Sue Red and Lori Luckner.  Sheryl Scott will be working as vendor contact person, but so much more is involved in the coming months.  Please let Warren Brown know of any administrative talent you have that can help us have a successful event.

Jim Gifford has agreed to be our Sunshine Chair and he has sent cards to several of our members who have needed support.  Some have been ill with covid-19, some are recovering from surgeries and injuries.  If we have missed you, I apologize, but it is because we have not known. Please let Jim know of any of our members who might appreciate a cheery card from FAA friends.

Our policy regarding inclement weather at our meeting time has always been to follow the news for Fairborn schools.  That may not apply this year, unless schools are back in session regularly.  So, we will try to send an e-mail blast the day of the scheduled meeting if we need to cancel.

Looking forward to seeing you on February 2.

FEBRUARY’S FEATURED ARTIST —Connie S. Gifford, Watercolor Artist

As a child living in Dayton, Ohio, Connie was enchanted with color…the brighter, the better.  Her childhood passion for drawing, painting, and art in general launched her into a 30-year profession in graphic arts and a degree in visual communication.  Bright colors motivated her then, and her love has increased greatly ever since.  In 2011, Connie discovered the magic of watercolor, and her childhood fiery passion was reignited.

She is inspired by all things in nature and strives to focus the bright, transparent freshness of watercolor to attract a viewer into her painting.  Connie wants people to feel the life pulsing in a wild or captive animal, in the promise of a sunrise, a bright day, or the release of a day’s stress in a sunset.  Her limited palette, from three to eight transparent colors, is selected to intensify a mood, celebrate a moment, and make her work sing.

Connie attends workshops with nationally acclaimed watercolor artists. She studies videos on watercolor and online courses, and attends demos and lectures at local art groups. She co-chairs a Thursday Paint-In watercolor group each week with local watercolor artists. She currently teaches private watercolor lessons to a high school student and a group of younger children.

Over the past several years, Connie has exhibited her paintings in Kettering and Beavercreek; the past five years her art has been accepted into the Ohio Watercolor Society juried shows; and she has sold several paintings to private collections in the surrounding communities. Connie can be reached at [email protected].

Hello all,

And just like that, the weather has turned cool, the leaves are on the ground, and Halloween and Thanksgiving are upon us.

If you missed our October meeting, there was important information for all to be aware of.

  1. We have had to cash in a CD in order to meet our normal expenses (rent, phones, speakers, etc.) for the year. Without the Sweet Corn Festival, we lost $13,000 income. Our current dues do not begin to cover even our rent, so there was no choice. We are now operating at a deficit, and spending our assets. That is not a sustainable way to continue providing the wonderful things you have come to expect from FAA.
  2. Sue and Loren Red, and Lori Luckner have resigned their positions with FAA and the Sweet Corn Festival. No monetary amount could be put on the time and energy they have devoted to both organizations over the years. We need volunteers in place next month (November) if the Sweet Corn Festival can be held in 2021. Along with Warren Brown and a committee of volunteers, they have been the driving force behind the Sweet Corn Festival, and Sue has been FAA Treasurer for as long as I can remember. Please, please, please consider taking a leadership role in this festival that is so important to the Fairborn community and to FAA. Call Warren Brown and he can fill you in how YOU can help.
  3. Roger Browning has agreed to take over the Treasurer role, but can only commit for a year. We NEED someone to take over this critical role for our organization (and to work with Roger ahead of time). Please call Roger or me if you are willing to take on this role. I’m sure Sue Red would be happy to answer questions as well. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Because of the restrictions placed on us by the Covid-19 pandemic, we are unable to have our annual Holiday and Christmas party this year. Therefore, there will not be a meeting in December.

We had a successful Members’ Show in October. There were 75 entries, and if you were unable to get out to see the show you missed some absolutely compelling pieces of art. We are planning a spring show for May 2021, and crossing our fingers! Hopefully, photos of the prize-winning entries will be on our Facebook page and our Website soon.

Jim Gifford has taken on the role of Sunshine Chair from Deb Suter. If you know of a member who needs some love from FAA, please let Jim know and he will send a card.

Our November meeting is Tuesday, November 3. Our speaker is Tim Langenderfer, Artist-in-Residence and instructor at MOSA Academy of Art. He will be talking about and demonstrating drawing techniques. Please reserve your space by emailing or calling Debi Cosenza. Only 40 seats are available because of social distancing requirements. Meeting begins at 7 pm. Remember there are no refreshments provided, so if you need to bring something for yourself only you may do so, but are required to take your trash out with you.

We will have a special recognition of the service of Sue and Loren Red, and Lori Luckner at our November meeting as well.

Cheap Joe shared this quote attributed to Dan White. “To belong is perhaps the most important and yet least recognized need of the human soul.”

Billie Dickson, President

NOVEMBER SPEAKER—TIM LANGENDERFER

Tim Langenderfer is our November demo artist Tuesday, November 3rd, at 7 pm.  He will be sharing his teaching skills in drawing.  Mr. Langenderfer is lead instructor and Artist-in-Residence at MOSA, Museum of Spiritual Art in Franklin, Ohio.  His career began in illustration for various well-known clients. To reserve your seat at the demo, email Debbie Cosenza at [email protected], as our maximum seating for distancing is 40 members. No refreshments, you may bring a snack and beverage as long as you remove your own trash. Masks MUST be worn. Our Board will be meeting from 5:30-6:30 in the gallery, so please do not arrive prior to 6:30. As always all common areas will be cleaned prior to your arrival. We hope to see you there!                                                                                                                          …Submitted by Carol Edsall
