FAIRBORN ART ASSOCIATION NEWS!

October 2016 Meeting Demo

Sheryl Scott was our Artist of the Month for October 2016. Sheryl gave a demo of her special artwork, quilling. Quilling is an age old art using strips of paper to design shapes and patterns. It was used to decorate baskets, tea caddies, trays, fire screens, and furniture in days gone by. Now it is used as an artform in frames, to decorate book covers, greeting cards, and for anything you can use raised or 3-dimensional objects on. It can be combined with paper or plastic flowers or leaves, or other objects. Sheryl started her demo by showing several books and articles on the subject of quilling. Then she gave a short history of quilling, which started out as metal filigree work in Egyptian times. By the 13th Century, artists mimicked this look with strips of paper, rolled loosely, placed on edge, and gilded to resemble precious metal. Quilling was very popular during Georgian and Victorian times among ladies, who could buy their paper strips with or without gilt edges, or cut their own from the pages of books. In the 18th Century, paper filigree was taught along with needlework as a proper pastime for ladies. It was also combined with shells, wax flowers, twisted wire, mica, and human hair. In Europe quilling was called paper filigree. It is believed the name quilling is derived from the feather quills said to have been used to roll the paper strips. Quilling spread from England to the American colonies. Its popularity faded during the late 1800s and not until the middle of this Century did quilling re-emerge, due in great part to the Quilling Guild of England (www.quilling-guild.co.uk). The North American Quilling Guild website is www.naqg.org.

Artist of the Month-David Yarnall

David Yarnall is our Artist of the Month for October 2016. His paintings are now in our Gallery and can be viewed at our October meeting. David’s watercolor paintings are mostly landscapes, some realistic, some impressionistic, and some abstract. David has a good background in art and art training. Let him tell you about it.

I was first inspired to paint by a family friend at an early age, watching him paint with watercolor. Started painting using watercolor, charcoal, pencil, and pastels, worked with oils in college. My work now is in watercolor with some pen and ink.

I received my formal graphic design and photographic education at The Collage of the Dayton Art Institute, Dayton, Ohio, Morehead State University, Morehead, KY, Art Instruction Inc., and have studied with Sterling Edwards, Andy Evensen, Frank Webb, Frank Francese, Mizuk Goltz. I am a member of The Western Ohio Watercolor Society (WOWS), Fairborn Art Association (FAA). My work has been exhibited by The Mac Worthington Gallery in Columbus, Ohio, The Art Museum of Springfield, Ohio, The Gallery Hotel, Tipp City, Ohio, Studio14, Tipp City, Ohio, Frame Haven, Springfield, Ohio.

I paint mostly landscapes in a blend of traditional and impressionistic styles, and some abstract. Commissions are accepted including portraiture. I can use photographs as primary source, or I can set up a photo shoot. Maximum portrait size is 11 x 15 and each piece is priced individually. All paintings are available as 4 x 5 inch note cards (6 per set). All painting sizes are unframed. Prices quoted are framed. E-mail at [email protected] or phone at (937) 430-0680.

SHERYL SCOTT BIO
My desire to be an artist started when I was just a child watching my father draw cartoons. He was asked to work at the Walt Disney Studios as a cartoonist but he turned it down. I didn’t really take art seriously until after 9/11 and I quit my medical assisting job. I had been doing that for 28 years. I felt it was time to give my creative side its reins! I decided to start creating handmade greeting cards. This is how I learned about quilling. I researched it, bought books, and self-taught myself how to do quilling. A few years later I found an art shop in Beavercreek. I learned more about art and taught quilling classes there. I also learned how to do colored pencil and watercolor projects. After the art shop closed, I was lucky enough to find Tom Kinarney. He has been extremely helpful teaching me about colored pencil. I also am learning from Joanne VonSossan. Between the two I have learned quite a bit. I was lucky enough to find the FAA. I am learning from some wonderful watercolor artists here.
My accomplishments include: a quilled peacock on display at George Washington’s mansion in West Virginia; a gallery showing of my quilled art at Wright State University; multiple quilled “Sun Art” pieces shown on the CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood Show. I have won awards for my colored pencil, watercolor, and quilled art in the FAA and Miamisburg art shows.

35th Annual Fairborn Sweet corn Festival
We are pleased to report that the 35th annual sweet corn festival was successful. We had some minor weather issues after 3 pm on Saturday but business was brisk up till 3 and then rebounded nicely on Sunday. We thank all the volunteers that helped make this event the success it was. Next year’s festival will be August 19 & 20, 2017, so when making your summer plans for next year leave some time to help with the festival. The funds generated from the festival are a major source of FAA operating funds and your volunteer time is critical to continuing the success of this event! Our first committee meeting for the 36th annual sweet corn festival is scheduled for October 25th at 7 pm in the FAA room–anyone interested is welcome to attend! We will provide a financial breakdown when all the details are worked out. …Submitted by Warren K. Brown, Chair.

ANNE ABGOTT WORKSHOP
From November 1 to November 3, 2016, the Fairborn Art Association will be hosting Anne Abgott for a 3-day workshop. I recently took a class from her in Florida and found her to be an outstanding teacher with great ideas and innovations to bring a colorful, award winning touch to your watercolor painting. Cost for the 3-day classes will be $250 for members, $270 for non-members. A $40 nonrefundable deposit is required to hold your place in the workshop. A minimum of 10 students is required. A registration form is attached.

Anne began painting in oils as a child and was mentored by Alexander Luke, one of the premier Canadian artists. She moved to Florida in 1998 and began working in watercolor. She is very influenced by the light and color she finds in Florida, and she has honed her skills with many, many hours of painting. She has found an art-rich environment in Florida and feels that the encouragement and friendship of the local artists are a big part of her success. She is an acclaimed mentor and true master teacher. She has been an “art mom” to her students, and many have gone on to become accomplished and award-winning artists themselves. She has conducted over 100 workshops and is in demand as a juror for many exhibitions. Her latest contract is with the Watercolor Art Society-Houston, or WAS-H, for a workshop and judging their upcoming National Show in 2016. September 2016 Meeting

Our September meeting was highlighted by a very informative demo by FAA member Tom Kinarney. Tom is, in our eyes and those of countless others, an expert in the art of colored pencil/pen and ink. Tom first showed us various books and magazines on “how to” with beautiful finished artwork. He finished with a demo of an apple and how he applies the colored pencil to achieve the various colored areas of the apple and the shadows and highlights. In picture four, Tom demonstrated how one pencil could make a very soft (light) stroke or a very dark (heavy) stroke by using pressure. His touch allows for multiple layers to accumulate. His apple looks good enough to eat.

Dear Members, Patrons, and Friends,

Fall is coming, I promise. I personally believe our greatest invention ever is air conditioning. I am so grateful for it. I hope you have had a great summer and have had time to be creative. Maybe you took some new photos or got some new inspiration for paintings. We have some great demos scheduled as well as a fabulous guest teacher. I had the opportunity to study with Ann Abgott when I lived in Florida. She has some very unusual techniques that I am sure will enhance your skills. Looking forward to seeing you once again at our meeting on September 6. The Board will meet at 5:30. The regular meeting will start at 7:00. Tom Kinarney will be demonstrating his wonderful work with colored pencils. Be sure to join us.

SWEET CORN FESTIVAL
The Sweet Corn Festival is over for another year. I have heard it was a great success. I was there Sunday afternoon and probably due to the wonderful weather – cool and sunny – the grounds were crowded. After a day of unexpected rain storms Saturday, this was a welcome change for Festival workers and attendees. A big Thank You to everyone who worked this year. I am sure you will hear from the SCF Committee as soon as they get their heads back in place after running around for the past couple of weeks without them. No one works harder than this committee.

B-W Greenway Landscape 2016

The Landscape 2016, juried art exhibition reception featuring Valle View Reserve and Community Park Reserve was held July 10th at the Fairborn Art Association Gallery. This exhibition was presented in collaboration between the B-W Greenway Community Land Trust and the Fairborn Art Association.

The Landscape exhibition was established in 2009 to heighten public awareness of local green spaces and the need to preserve them, as well as to foster an interest in painting from nature. Each year a different location in the Greenway is featured, and this year the area of Mad River Scenic Byway was the choice for the artists.

Fifteen artists participated entering 33 pieces of art. This year’s juror was Tess Cortess, an artist and Gallery operations manager from Wright State University.

Awards and ribbons were presented to the participating artists by B-W Greenway Community Land Trust Trustees, Bob Jurick and Marit Riddle who is co-chairmen with Bob Coates.

The Fairborn Art Association Gallery purchased the ribbons and graciously allowed the use of their gallery.

The Landscapes 2016 Exhibition will be open to the public the July 24 from 2- 4 pm. Everyone is invited to see great art of Valle View and Community Park Reserves.

OPEN PAINTING SESSIONS AT THE GALLERY
Thursday Paint-In group meets each Thursday from 9:30 till 12:30 for watercolor painting. Connie Gifford and Shirlee Bauer coordinate the group which was originally created by Misuk Goltz, who recently moved to California. Because we are using the FAA Gallery, we collect dues to pay for the use of the Gallery, but all things considered, a few dollars for each 8-week session is well worth it for gathering together with watercolor to share ideas and get inspired. We all have a wonderful time and enjoy watercolor painting together. If you have questions, please contact Connie Gifford or Shirlee Bauer by phone or email.

Friday artists meet at 10 am and paint until 1 or 2 pm each week, with a break at noon for lunch. We meet each week continuously unless there is something else scheduled in the FAA Gallery. Billie Dickson coordinates the group and we don’t paint if only two of us will be there, but anyone can contact Billie to find out if we are on schedule for that week. We expect people who come regularly to be FAA members and pay a fee each week (pays for lights, etc.). It is basically an open work session for artists in any medium and we would love to have others join us. If you have questions, you can contact Billie Dickson by email or phone.

NITA LELAND EXHIBITION
Nita Leland will the featured artist in an Alumni Art Exhibition, “Creative Spirit: A Retrospective,” at Otterbein University. David Smith Obituary

On a sad note: David L. Smith passed away on May 22, 2016, at home. David was a long-time member of the Fairborn Art Association until recent years. Born in 1921 in Dayton, David was the son of Jack and Bessie Lewis Smith. He graduated from Oakwood High School in 1939 and received the Oakwood Distinguished Alumni Award in 2012. He entered Miami University, but served three years in the army in the Pacific during WW II, before graduating with a BFA from Miami University in 1947. He received his MFA from the University of Iowa in 1950. David was a talented and dedicated artist and some of his works have been compiled into two books, “Sgt. Smith’s Sketchbook” and “Gem City through an Artist’s Eye”. Dave’s true talent, however, was in his ability to make friends and inspire others. When he spoke of people he often preceded their names with “my good friend….” And there were many ‘good friends’. Among those friends were his former students. He taught art at Fairmont West, retiring in 1983. In retirement he taught painting and drawing at the University of Dayton, the Dayton Art Institute, the River Bend Art Center and his winter home in Florida. David was president of the Western Ohio Watercolor Society, Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors, a member of the Miami Valley Arts Council, and, with his wife, Kay, an establishing member of the 48 High Street Art Gallery where he was active until just months before his death. David’s watercolors are much sought after and exhibited in numerous art galleries and business establishments. He is especially known for his sketches, drawings and watercolors that capture Dayton architecture and the surrounding Dayton landscape. David was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Kay. He is survived by an extended family of cousins and those “good friends” of whom he spoke so often. All of us are better for having known Dave and having experienced his joy and his enthusiasm for life and his generous soul. Family will greet friends from 5:00-8:00pm on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 East Stroop Road, Kettering. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:30pm on Friday, May 27, 2016 at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, 3033 Far Hills Avenue, Kettering. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts should be made to Hospice of Dayton , 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45420, the Carillon Park/Dayton History Association, 1000 Carillon Boulevard, Dayton, OH 45409, or to a charitable organization of choice. Condolences and other remembrances may be sent to the family at wwwww.routsong.com

F.A.A. Membership Dues

Fairborn Art Association Membership dues for 2016/2017 must be paid by June 1, 2016 for you to be able to participate in our activities for the coming year. Our membership year begins on June 1 and runs until May 31 of the following year. Please complete a membership form to allow us to have the latest information about you. This helps us to schedule speakers, workshops, and other activities. We would also like to have your email address to enable us to reach you quickly in case of weather emergencies, etc. Also, someone must hand-stuff regular mail and take it to the post office and this takes a lot of time and effort. Our membership has grown quite a bit since we first started with mailing out newsletters and announcements. Please send your membership form and a check to Fairborn Art Association, P.O. Box 1231, Fairborn, OH 45324. The membership form is attached or may be obtained at the Gallery. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the form.
