FAIRBORN ART ASSOCIATION NEWS!

April 2023 Newsletter

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hello Fellow Artists!

As I begin writing this letter, Easter is on the horizon, a season of hope and rebirth. Despite the snowy weather we’ve been experiencing, flowers will soon be blooming, trees will be budding, baby birds will be peeping, and baby bunnies will be hidden in little nests in our yards. My wish is to make this a time of revitalization and passion and to put these dreary months behind us.

Speaking of flowers, Louise Jackson is our demo artist for April, and she is a remarkable floral painter. I took one of her workshops and it was very informative and fun so please join us at our FAA meeting on Tuesday, April 4, at 7:00 pm.

As most of you know, we had to cancel our show at the Spark venue for April, which was very disappointing, but hopefully something will work out in the future with Blue Bike Bakery. Thanks again to everyone who was willing to participate and to those who were a huge help in the planning of this event.

We do have a Members’ Fine Art Show in May, so be sure that your FAA membership is up to date. This is always an exciting event with so many beautiful pieces! The drop-off date is April 27 from noon to five, and members are allowed to enter two pieces at $10 each, based upon the prospectus requirements.

That’s all I have for now, so don’t forget the June Social, the B-W Greenway show in July, and of course, WE NEED A SWEET CORN FESTIVAL CHAIRPERSON!! (too subtle?)

Keep creating!

March 2023 Newsletter

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Greetings Fellow Artists!

It is the day after Valentine’s Day as I write this and it feels like Spring… the weather in Ohio never fails to amaze me! I suppose we might have a snowstorm next week, since one never knows in this part of the country.

It was a treat to see those who were able to attend our February meeting as our December meeting seems so long ago. Dr, Hyacinth Paul was very entertaining and informative, and I hope she may become a member of the FAA. She would be a creative and energetic addition to our group. I’m looking forward to our March meeting when Trish McKinney is our demo artist. I have heard many complimentary remarks made about her work and have seen some beautiful examples, so it should be another learning experience. I would like to give a special shout out to Carol Edsall for all the time and effort she puts forth in obtaining an artist for us every month. I know it’s not always easy, especially when the artist has to cancel and she has to find a replacement without much notice. Many of these artists are very busy and their time is scheduled months out so it can be quite a scramble sometimes. Carol does an excellent job providing interesting people in various areas of art, and so, THANK YOU, Carol, for doing such a good job!

As I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, I was challenging myself this year to get out of my comfort zone and I have now entered challenge number two. Between my husband Jay, my sister-in-law and myself, we hung my solo show in the Lofino Gallery at the Beavercreek Senior Center, which is quite amazing, since none of us have ever done that before! I was nervous about the reception but it went off without a hitch, and I can’t thank all of you fellow FAA members enough for taking time to attend. It meant the world to me and I was happy my family was able to meet so many of you. So it is now hanging in all of its glory (LOL) and I am happy that it all came to fruition. I don’t know what the rest of the year holds in store but I thank God and all of you for your love and support.

We voted to keep our dues the same at our board meeting, which is an anomaly in this day and age (Huzzah!). Of course, this gets me started on my soapbox… wait for it… we need someone or “someones” to take charge of the Sweet Corn Festival. The reason we have very low dues and wonderful demo artists is because we have the monies to support ourselves due to this festival. If anyone is interested, please contact Warren Brown or myself.

We have an exciting workshop this spring with Keiko Tanabe, a world renowned artist, so be sure and send in your $40 to reserve your spot! Our Members’ Show is also fast approaching so I hope you are all out there creating your superb works of art.

With that, I will bring this month’s epistle to an end. Take care and see you in March!

MARCH’S FEATURED ARTIST – TRISH MCKINNEY

ARTIST STATEMENT

Being aware of wonder – that moment when you pause for beauty, for sparkling, incandescent light – and the magical awareness of emotion which wells up inside – these are the things I savor and adore. I love weaving a story through the use of color, words, shapes, lines, and texture – inspiring the viewer to tell their own story.

Trish McKinney is a national and international award-winning artist, instructor, graphic designer, and published author and illustrator. Her unique mixed watermedia paintings are about being aware of a moment then sharing her wonder by telling the story. The passion that drives it all for this artist is to inspire – both through paintings, writing, and teaching. Trish especially loves the unpredictable surprise and spontaneous nature of watercolor and combining layers of meaning in her painting through words and unexpected shapes. She loves to ask “what if” when working in her studio because that always leads her to a new discovery.

BIO/RESUME

Trish McKinney is a Signature member of the Ohio Watercolor Society and has juried multiple exhibits. Her paintings have been juried into several international and national exhibitions – National Watercolor Society, Pikes Peak International Watermedia Exhibition, Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Exhibition, Kentucky Watercolor Society, International Society of Experimental Artists, and Ohio Watercolor Society – to name a few. She has consistently won numerous awards in several national exhibitions since 2011.

Trish is a published author, illustrator, and artist and has been featured in Confident Color by Nita Leland, Splash 12 – Celebrating Artistic Vision, The Artistic Touch 4, Do Trees Nap? Children’s Book, and Art Journaling Magazine.

She is also a StencilGirl Artist Designer, a GOLDEN Artist Educator, and a member of the Gel Press Creative Team.

Trish finds joy teaching and sharing her experience through giving programs, demonstrations, workshops and retreats for all ages both locally and abroad. She has been teaching and traveling since 1991 in Italy, Greece, Croatia, Ephesus, France, and throughout the United States.

October 2023, Trish will be jurying a National Exhibition for the Watercolor Society of Oregon, as well as teaching a 5 day workshop.

One of her favorite quotes is – “Instructions for living a life. Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.” By Mary Oliver – because this perfectly conveys all that is required to be an artist.

SIGN UP SOON FOR THE MAY 2023 WORKSHOP WITH KEIKO TANABE!

This artist is very well-known and, due to her popularity, artists from outside our area are already registering for this watercolor workshop. Seating is limited. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to learn from this artist and teacher.

Keiko was born in Kyoto, Japan. As a child growing up in an art-loving family, she always enjoyed drawing and painting and won many awards in children’s art contests. However, art was not her chosen field of study later on. She earned a B.A. in intercultural communication (International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan) and an M.A. in international education (UCLA, California). She then worked in international relations positions in a Japanese government trade organization in Tokyo, at a large law firm in San Francisco and at a private consulting firm in San Diego. For decades, she has traveled extensively, mainly in European countries, Asia and North America.

Through all these years, Keiko knew there was in her heart the growing desire to someday become an artist. That, fueled by her love of travel and strong interest in other cultures, eventually found its way out in 2003. After learning basic drawing and watercolor painting skills at a local community school in San Diego, she took on her first project as an artist together with her father, a renowned scholar of French literature in Japan. Through the Azure Sea and Sky of Provence: A Tribute to Her Joie de Vivre (Kosei Publishing, Osaka, Japan) was published in August, 2003, authored by her father and illustrated by Keiko. From then on, she intensely taught herself to be fluent in watercolor painting, just as one would do to master a foreign language.

Mostly self-taught, Keiko embarked on a professional art career in 2005 and started exhibiting publicly. In the same year she took a workshop from Alvaro Castagnet and discovered the joy of plein-air painting. Since that year her paintings have been juried into many exhibitions across Americas and in Asia and Europe. Her work has been purchased by private and corporate collectors from all around the world. She also had her paintings published in leading art magazines in the U.S., Europe and Japan. Additionally, she self-publishes her art books and nine books have been completed to date. She’s also a sought-after workshop instructor. Since 2011, she has been invited to and completed successfully more than 400 workshops and numerous live demonstrations around the world. She has served as a juror in a number of art exhibitions including some major watercolor shows around the world such as the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, the International Watercolour Masters, the Northwest Watercolor Society, the Utah Watercolor Society and the New Mexico Watercolor Society. In 2015 she was named an official Ambassador for Winsor & Newton. In 2018, she was appointed to the advisory board of the American Watercolor Weekly. In 2018 and 2019, she was invited to be a faculty member for the Plein Air Convention & Expo, the world’s largest plein-air painting event. Keiko currently lives in San Diego, California.

The registration form for the May 2023 Workshop is available in the Gallery and on our website under Announcements/Forms.

February 2023 Newsletter

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a happy, healthy holiday, despite all the sickness that surrounds us. Even with the debilitating weather, we had a wonderful time with our family, with great food and fellowship. As for 2023, I have decided to challenge myself to step outside my comfort zone and attempt to expand my horizons in the art world. On Saturday, January 7, I gave an art demonstration at the Beavercreek Library, where I painted one of my snowman slates. I was somewhat nervous but it turned out to be a fun, rewarding experience. I enjoyed interacting with the adults and kids who attended and hope to maybe do it again later this year. The second challenge will be in February when I display my artwork at the Lofino Gallery in Beavercreek. Once again, I am nervous but I am powering through, as they say. The reception will be held on Thursday, February 2, from 5:00–7:00 pm, if anyone would like to attend. None of this would have happened if it weren’t for all the encouragement and support I’ve received from all my friends in FAA… I can’t thank you enough!!!

I’m looking forward to our next FAA meeting, Tuesday, February 7, at 7:00 pm, where Dr. Hyacinth Paul will be our guest speaker. I looked online at her work and found her acrylics lively and colorful so it should be a very interesting evening.

Our spring and summer seasons will be here before we know it, with lots of activities including our senior scholarships, Members show, May workshop with Keiko Tanabe, BW Greenway show, June social, Sweet Corn Festival, and more, so be sure to keep abreast of everything through our newsletter, which is superbly put together by our corresponding secretary, April Coppess… kudos, April!

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but we need someone to take over the reins of the Sweet Corn Festival. All kidding aside, our dear Warren Brown has turned an impressive 80 years young and is willing to train someone to coordinate this important cog of our organization. Please contact me or anyone on the board if you are interested. There will be other job openings that will be announced at a later date.

Below are a few photos from the demo at the library, and with that I will sign off. Until we meet in February, keep creating!

FEBRUARY’S FEATURED ARTIST

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Hyacinth Paul will be our guest demo artist at Fairborn Art Association on February 7.

MAY 2023 WORKSHOP WITH KEIKO TANABE

Coming in May 2023 is a wonderful watercolor workshop with well-known artist Keiko Tanabe as the instructor.

The registration form for the May 2023 Workshop is available in the Gallery and as an attachment in December’s newsletter.

Greetings Fellow Artists!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends! My family has our big celebration on the Wednesday evening before Thanksgiving at our daughter Kelsey’s home, where she prepares the best dinner ever!!! I made some pies and apple crisp which were pretty good, if I do say so myself! On Thursday, we take all the family to Cracker Barrel for breakfast and then they travel to their respective in-laws to celebrate some more. I love this holiday and am thankful for my many blessings, and, I’m thankful for all of you and to be involved in such a wonderful organization. I have so enjoyed getting to know so many of you and look forward to meeting even more!

One way to get to know each other better is to come to our Christmas party on Saturday, December 10, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at our gallery. Food will be provided so please get your reservations to Debbie Cosenza by December 3, and, if you want to participate in our gift exchange, please bring a gift between $10 and $15. We are having the party on Saturday this year as an experiment for those who don’t like to drive after dark. I know some of you won’t be able to attend and you will be missed!

We won’t have a meeting in January, so you can all stay in and stay snuggly and warm but be sure and set aside the first Tuesday in February for another fun-filled, interesting meeting and demo!

Don’t forget that we are still looking for a new Commander-in-Chief for the Sweet Corn Festival. Our fearless leader just turned 80 in October and wants to turn over the helm to someone new so please consider taking on this vital position.

Well, as my dad would say, “That’s it, Fort Pitt!”  Enjoy this special time of year and keep creating!

SAD NEWS OF A LONGTIME FAA MEMBER

We have just learned that longtime FAA member Mary Hart died on January 7, 2022. She had been in the care of her niece in Greenville, OH since the pandemic began. Mary was 94 years at the time of her death. Many members will remember Mary and her husband Charlie, who were both active in the organization. Mary was an oil painter and painted regularly with the Friday painters, and Charlie was a woodworker and active volunteer (building our original outdoor furniture and flower boxes). Many members will fondly remember celebrating Charlie’s 90th birthday at a meeting a few years ago.

Autumn Greetings!

I’ve been enjoying watching the leaves turn from green to all the beautiful colors of Fall. The yellows, oranges, reds, and burgundies can take one’s breath away, especially when the sun is shining. They just seem to glow! Hopefully everyone is taking advantage and creating “masterpieces” with your own personal creativity. Speaking of personal creativity, I have been busy painting slates for various crafts shows and have two more to go. I have been painting slates for about 35 years, with slates I originally accumulated from my mother’s old farmhouse near Athens, Ohio. The slate I’m painting on now is from a chicken coop in South Vienna. I paint anything from snowmen, cardinals, chickadees, barns, flowers and lighthouses to peace signs, pets and football helmets. I enjoy putting on my music, sitting at my work desk in my front sunroom, shutting out the world, and entering my own world of art. I hope each of you have an outlet to express your gift of creativity.

Another reminder – Our Christmas party will be on Saturday, December 10, from 3:00–5:00 pm with catered food. Anyone planning to attend should contact our membership chair, Debbie Cosenza, by December 3 so we know how much food to buy. If you want to join in our gift exchange, please bring a $10–15 gift.

Don’t forget that we still need a new chairperson for the Sweet Corn Festival. Warren Brown, our faithful leader, just turned 80 in October and would like to retire from this important position. He is still willing to mentor anyone who is interested in volunteering. We all know this is our BIG moneymaker that keeps FAA running smoothly so please consider stepping up and helping.

Pat Dunker is giving up the position of Workshop Coordinator and Shirlee Bauer is taking over that position. I think we would all like to acknowledge what a wonderful job Pat did in providing and caring for our workshop artists over the years. It’s quite an undertaking which Pat did with enthusiastic competence and we owe her our grateful thanks for a job well-done! I have every confidence that Shirlee will do a great job and continue to provide FAA with talented artists from all over the country. Thank you, Pat and Shirlee!!!

I’d like to thank Jim and Connie Gifford, Roger and Jan Browning, and Billie Dickson for helping to clean out the office and back rooms of our gallery. It was a MAJOR undertaking and we managed to fill an empty dumpster and then filled Billie’s car with items to take to Goodwill. You can actually walk into the library without tripping over tables, chairs, crates, etc., and the back storage room has been cleared of old, unusable pieces. The office has been organized with extraneous articles removed. We worked for 3 1/2 hours and I can’t thank all these hard workers enough!! And once again, thanks to Lucy Burns and Carol Collett who made our library usable again!

Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 1, at 7:00 pm where Erica Keener, who works in pastels, will be our guest demo artist. I thoroughly enjoyed Nancy Neville last month and look forward to what Erica has to share.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting!

NOVEMBER’S FEATURED ARTIST –ERICA KEENER

Artist Erica Keener will demo her pastel art work at our November 1 meeting. With her bold use of color and her eye for natural detail, Erica’s work captures the world around us, asking viewers to reconsider even the most apparently ordinary scenes in what she refers to as “luminous brightscapes”. In particular she enjoys trying to recreate clouds and storms as they move over the landscape. Erica’s goal is to share that simple, meditative joy one can find in simply contemplating the ever changing skies above, and she would like to encourage everyone to look around more often – and especially to look up. Her work can be seen online at ericakeenerart.com, in her studio at the Front Street art complex and in private and corporate collections throughout the Miami Valley and beyond.

Happy Fall, Y’All!

Can you believe summer is over and autumn has arrived? It will take me a while to reprogram my thoughts from flip flops, cutoffs, and t-shirts to jeans, sweaters, socks, and shoes, but I am looking forward to bonfires, apple crisp, fall foliage, and pumpkin spice (although I hear the jury is still out on it)!  It’s also a time for festivals, craft shows and bazaars so I hope you get out and enjoy the foods, sights and sounds of the season.

Speaking of festivals, our Sweet Corn Festival was quite exciting with all the storms and even a tornado warning but we “weathered” through all the difficulties and still made a decent profit. I’d like to thank, once again, all those in charge who worked SO hard to make this undertaking a reality and all the volunteers who worked the watermelon booth, the vendor’s booth, the information booth and of course, those who worked Thursday setting up the field for the vendor’s spaces. I saw a lot of smiling faces and heard no grumbling which, in my book, is a plus! Our chairman, Warren Brown, once again did an excellent job coordinating this event, putting out fires, and keeping things running on an even keel. The storms made things a bit tricky but Warren handled everything beautifully. A HUGE THANK YOU to you, Warren, and all you do!!!

We still need someone to step into Warren’s shoes to chair the Sweet Corn Festival. He is more than happy to take them under his wing and train them in the who, what, when, and where’s of this event. Please consider helping our organization with this major money maker for the FAA.

I would like to thank Jane Trame on behalf of the FAA for purchasing and donating the beautiful watermelon watercolor painted by Carol Teilhet, who was a long-time member of our organization. She was such a gifted artist who touched many lives with her loving spirit and this painting will be a special reminder of her amazing talent.

A reminder that we have paint-ins at our gallery on Thursday mornings beginning at 9:00 am, Thursday evenings at 6:30 pm, and Fridays at 10:00 am. The Thursday morning group focuses on watercolor and the other groups are all mediums. Feel free to join us!

I want to give everyone plenty of notice that this year’s Christmas party has been moved to SATURDAY, December 10 from 3:00–5:00 pm. I know I mentioned December 3 at the last meeting but, due to scheduling difficulties, it will now be December 10. The food will be catered. We will be taking reservations again through Debbie Cosenza and will keep you posted on deadlines. Please mark your calendars for this fun party!

Looking forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting on Tuesday, October 4 at 7:00 pm with Nancy Neville as our guest demo artist. See you there and keep creating!

End of Summer Greetings, Fellow Artists!

I can’t believe summer is almost over… where did it go? I hope you all had “fun in the sun” despite some of the very hot temperatures. I enjoyed our June meeting and Members’ Show with the cook-out themed refreshments. All the work was outstanding and it’s fun to see everyone’s various talents on display. Congratulations to all the winners, although, in my eyes, you’re all winners!

We also had the BW Greenway exhibit in July, with some very beautiful artwork in a multitude of mediums, which the awards typified. It was fun to see everyone’s interpretation of the expanse of land off Spangler Road, my old stomping grounds when I was young. I know our friends from BW Greenway enjoyed partnering with us for this project and I thank everyone for their help.

I would like to give a HUGE shout out to Carol Collett and Lucille Burns for organizing and clearing out our library of duplicate and unwanted books. It is so clean and easy to explore our plethora of artist materials now and I recommend everyone go and see what a tremendous job they did. We will explain the new streamlined system on how to check out a book at our September meeting. The books that were removed will be part of a book giveaway held during our art supplies sale that day.

The 2022 Sweet Corn Festival is in the history books, and kudos to Warren Brown and his team of HARD workers who once again made it a success despite the rain, hail, and tornado warnings! I’m sure the attendance and profit numbers have to be down from last year but there was still a nice crowd of people when the sun was shining and I will be anxious to hear the final numbers. I cannot commend the committee chairs enough for the excellent job they continue to perform every year, i.e., Roger Browning, Sheryl Scott, Cheryl Miracle, Jane Trame, all the wonderful volunteers, and last, but not least, Warren Brown, who spearheads this enormous endeavor! This was Warren’s last year as Sweet Corn Festival chair and I don’t know how we can ever replace him. If anyone is interested in taking over this worthwhile project, please let me know. Thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart… you’re superheroes in my mind!!!

Our next meeting is Tuesday, September 6, at 7:00 pm, with Jacqueline Sullivan as our guest artist, and includes our annual Art Supplies Sale which will be held from 5:30–6:30 pm.

See you in September (once again, musical overtones…),

Linda Brandenburg

2022 FAIRBORN SWEET CORN FESTIVAL PRELIMINARY REPORT

The Sweet Corn Festival Committee is happy to report that attendance at the festival was steady with Saturday appearing to be the bigger day. The afternoon storms no doubt slowed down attendance, but our parking crew reported that every available space all the way to the back of the high school was full early afternoon on Saturday. Vendors reported brisk sales and the Lions did well even with the rain events.

The Committee thanks all the FAA volunteers that committed to help at the vendors gate, information booth and watermelon booth. Without your assistance a successful event would not have happened!

Remember that next year is going to be our 41st annual event so begin thinking about the task you are going to volunteer for next August 19 and 20!

As well, I need to retire from this event so one of you all needs to step up and volunteer to take on this important task! You will have the opportunity to understudy the process of making the festival happen throughout the rest of 2022 and 2023 up till the event date!

TREASURER’S SWEET CORN FESTIVAL PRELIMINARY REPORT

As of 29 August 2022, the total revenue from the Sweet Corn Festival was $28,602.73; total expenses are $13,678.45. This leaves a net income of $14,924.28. There is more revenue expected from the food venders and from the Lions Club. We also have more expenses including Kroger for the watermelon, ice and water, and other expenses. As of 29 August 2022, the total revenue for the watermelon booth was $2321.20. We owe Kroger $1127.20 and are owed by the Lions Club $346.55, giving us a profit of $1540.55. The rain and storms really put a damper on our sales this year, but we did go through 130 watermelons and sold about 1200 cups of melon. Thanks to all who helped at the watermelon booth this year.

 ART SUPPLIES SALE

Our Art Supplies Sale will be held on September 6 from 5:30–6:30 pm (simultaneously with our board meeting). Prior registration is not required this year. The doors will be open and a table will be provided. If weather permits, some tables may be set up outside. Set up and all sales transactions are your responsibility so make sure you bring enough money to make change. Final cleanup of all items is also yours to do; nothing is to be left in the gallery or outside.

FAA LIBRARY NEWS

After a two-year Covid break, the library revamp project is ready to be unveiled. We have reorganized the books to a more user-friendly format. We will give a brief intro at the September meeting. Right now we need your help finding books that have been borrowed through the years and never returned, undoubtedly forgotten about. Everyone, please look through your art book collection and pull out any that are stamped on the back-inside cover “Property of FAA”. (I found one that I didn’t even know I had.) We would like to get the books back into circulation. You can bring books to the meeting or call Carol Collett at 326-467-0578 to arrange a delivery time.

Three local high school seniors received a $1,000 scholarship each. The Fairborn Art Association awards three $1,000 scholarships annually for graduating high school seniors who are planning to pursue art in college. Letters and applications are distributed to area high schools’ guidance counselors and/or art teachers. Students submit digital examples of completed art work, along with a recommendation letter from an art teacher, to the association. A panel of association members examines each entry and chooses three eligible student winners. The recipients for 2022 scholarships are Ms. Brooke Hustead, Miamisburg High School; Ms. Stella Lieff, Yellow Springs High School; and Ms. Sadie Miller, Southeastern High School. The scholarship checks were awarded at the June meeting of the Fairborn Art Association, 221 N. Central, in Fairborn, Ohio. The students and their families attended. The competition was really tough this year–congratulations to these winners!

Hello Fellow Artists!

Hasn’t the weather been fabulous? It’s so good to see everything green again, the flowers and trees blooming, the birds singing and the bees buzzing. I hope you have been enjoying this beautiful time of year and that allergy attacks haven’t been too severe.

First of all, I want to thank all of you who entered our Members’ Show and congratulate all the winners, although to me, you’re all winners! We had so many fine pieces with a lot of variety in styles and mediums. I believe our judge, David R. Smith, had a difficult time trying to decide who to select for the various prizes. I would also like to give a big thanks to Connie Gifford and Carol Edsall who commandeered this event, and to all the volunteers…we couldn’t do it without you! You should all be proud of your entries and we will see who wins what at our next meeting in June.

Speaking of which, our next meeting will be Tuesday, June 7 at 6:30 pm, where we will be serving hot dogs, baked beans, chips, some sort of salad, dessert, and drinks. You do not need to bring anything, just your appetites. We will be introducing the Sweet Corn queen and king, the three scholarship winners, inducting this year’s officers (all of whom are returning from last year) and, as previously mentioned, we will be voting for the People’s Choice Awards, where each of you will choose your top three picks from our Members’ Show. This will be our last meeting for the summer so I hope to see a good turn out!

The BW Greenway show is fast approaching so please look for details in our newsletter.

Plans for the Sweet Corn Festival are in full swing so please be sure to sign up and volunteer for the Watermelon Booth (Roger Browning) and the many other jobs needed, i.e., the Information Booth, Vendor Gate, Laying out of vendor spaces, etc. (Warren Brown). As I’ve mentioned numerous times before, the Sweet Corn Festival is essential to maintaining funds for FAA to function, and we desperately need a volunteer to step up to chair this event as Warren will be stepping down after this year. Please consider assuming this important position. Warren will be more than happy to show you the ropes!

We now have internet service in our gallery! A huge thank you to Roger Browning for undertaking this project.

I would also like to remind you that we will be having our annual artist supplies sale at our September meeting where you may set up a table and sell extra paints, brushes, paper, canvases, etc. before the meeting. It’s a wonderful opportunity to clean out your studios of extraneous items.

As my first year as president is winding down, I would like to say how grateful I am for all Board members and Committee Chairpersons with whom I have had the privilege to work in 2021–22. You all couldn’t have been more kind and helpful as I blindly stumbled through my responsibilities, generally clueless as to what I was to do in many situations. You were patient as I slowly learned my capabilities, and listened to my many, varied questions. You all are fabulous and I look forward to what 2022–23 brings.

Looking forward to our June meeting, and as always, keep creating!

2022 FAA MEMBERS’ SHOW JUROR STATEMENT

Thank you to the Fairborn Art Association for the invitation to juror the exhibition. Though I was honored with the duty, it’s an arduous job of selecting pieces to award. As the exhibition was open to many mediums from photography to sculpture and collage to colored pencil, there was the added challenge of comparing and selecting pieces that were drastically different.

With regard to criteria, a number of things should be considered: Beauty – does one find the piece captivating? One may be drawn to a piece because of a pleasing composition, the colors, &/or textures. Or perhaps the piece elicits an Emotional Response? Also, the presentation &/or Framing might aid or detract from the beauty of a piece.

Technical Skill – does the artist show mastery of the medium?

Uniqueness – does the artist show us something different. Has the artist taken risks?

Meaning – is the piece thought provoking or is there a story behind the piece? Or… is the piece purely representational?

Lastly, as a watercolorist, I also have an additional criteria for watermedia – “Does the painting showcase the qualities of watercolor well?” What makes watercolor so unique and enjoyable (and sometimes challenging) is the medium of water, which helps the artists create the beautiful interminglings of color, unique textures, and transparent glazes that are unique to watercolor.

Regarding criteria and juroring however, as the artist Herman Pekel once said, “Artists make the worst judges, as they focus on the technical side vs the emotional side of the painting.” He added that if Van Gogh would have entered an exhibition, Artists would have never selected his pieces.

In response, I tried to take this into consideration and not just look at the paintings with a “technical eye”, but also to simply view the paintings in terms of whether I felt drawn to the painting. Does the painting illicit an emotion? Does the piece hold my interest?

Again, there were many more worthy submissions than there were spots available. Thank you for sharing them and congratulations to the selected artists.

FAA BOOTH AT GARDEN AFFAIR

This Garden and Art Fair will be held on June 18, 2022 from 10:00 am-3:00 pm on Main Street Commons (Main Street and Grand Avenue) in Fairborn. This will be a great opportunity to promote our organization to the community and it’s free! A tent will be set up, information about FAA will be handed out and artwork will be displayed.

WATERMELON BOOTH VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Watermelon Booth schedule is filling up nicely. I appreciate all those who have volunteered so far, however, I still need two people for Saturday, August 20, 4:30 to 7:00 pm, and three people for Sunday, August 21, 3:30 to 6:00 pm. If we don’t get volunteers for those shifts we will have to shut down early and that will impact our sales and our profits. If you can help with these shifts, please contact me at [email protected] or (937) 760-5222. Thank you for your support.
