Juror’s Statement:
Thank you for giving me the honor of judging this show. It was a real treat to view all the submitted artwork as I marveled at a variety of mediums, subject matters and different artistic expressions.
As a juror, I looked at composition, technical proficiency, originality, content, presentation and how all the design components came together to create a compelling image.
Award winners demonstrated how eloquently they could communicate their initial vision using their unique voice and their work spoke to me.
Congratulations to all the participating artists for your achievement and inspiration you are giving us through your beautiful creations.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Hello Fellow Artists!
Spring has sprung and what a variety of weather we’ve experienced: thunderstorms, summer temperatures, and even some sleet and snow flurries! Right now, I am looking through my window and enjoying the beautiful pink apple blossoms that are continuing to bloom despite the fact that the tree is dying. I know there is message I need to learn from this. Could it be that there is beauty in everything, if we just look hard enough, or that I can strive to be positive in the midst of negativity, or maybe it’s just that I should make the most of any opportunity, no matter how dire it appears. I hope all of you are blooming despite your circumstances and making a positive influence on the world and those around you.
This month we have our Workshop with Keiko Tanabe, who will also be the demo artist for our May 2 meeting at 7:00 pm and the judge for our Members’ Fine Art Show. This is always an exciting time for FAA and I am anxious to see everyone’s entries. We will also be voting on the slate of officers for 2023–2024 at this month’s meeting.
Our June 6 meeting will be our end of the year social beginning at 6:30 pm. FAA will provide hot dogs, buns, toppings, drinks, and paper products, and we would like the rest of you to provide side dishes and desserts. This will also be our People’s Choice show, the installation of officers, introduction of scholarship winners and the Sweet Corn Festival King and Queen, so be sure and mark it on your calendars.
Speaking of the Sweet Corn Festival, it will be here before we know it so please sign up to volunteer. See either Warren Brown or Roger Browning, who is in charge of the Watermelon Booth. Many hands are needed to make this a success so please help mark Thursday, August 17 through Sunday, August 20 to help. FAA is such a wonderful organization and the monies we make at this event help make it possible to provide many of the benefits we enjoy. Also, if you feel led to champion this cause, please contact us, as Warren is more than ready to give up the reins.
You’ve all received your membership reminders from Debbie Cosenza so please fill out your membership forms and return them with your dues to the gallery or Debbie. Thank you!
I believe that is all for this month so enjoy the nice weather and keep creating!

MAY’S FEATURED ARTIST – KEIKO TANABE
Fairborn Art Association is delighted to welcome Keiko Tanabe for our May demo and workshop. Keiko was born in Kyoto, Japan. As a child growing up in an art-loving family, she always enjoyed drawing and painting and won many awards in children’s art contests. However, art was not her chosen field of study later on. She earned a B.A. in intercultural communication (International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan) and an M.A. in international education (UCLA, California). She then worked in international relations positions in a Japanese government trade organization in Tokyo, at a large law firm in San Francisco and at a private consulting firm in San Diego. For decades, she has traveled extensively, mainly in European countries, Asia and North America.
Through all these years, Keiko knew there was in her heart the growing desire to someday become an artist. That, fueled by her love of travel and strong interest in other cultures, eventually found its way out in 2003. After learning basic drawing and watercolor painting skills at a local community school in San Diego, she took on her first project as an artist together with her father, a renowned scholar of French literature in Japan. Through the Azure Sea and Sky of Provence: A Tribute to Her Joie de Vivre (Kosei Publishing, Osaka, Japan) was published in August, 2003, authored by her father and illustrated by Keiko. From then on, she intensely taught herself to be fluent in watercolor painting, just as one would do to master a foreign language.
Mostly self-taught, Keiko embarked on a professional art career in 2005 and started exhibiting publicly. In the same year she took a workshop from Alvaro Castagnet and discovered the joy of plein-air painting. Since that year her paintings have been juried into many exhibitions across Americas and in Asia and Europe. Her work has been purchased by private and corporate collectors from all around the world. She also had her paintings published in leading art magazines in the U.S., Europe and Japan. Additionally, she self-publishes her art books and nine books have been completed to date. She’s also a sought-after workshop instructor. Since 2011, she has been invited to and completed successfully more than 400 workshops and numerous live demonstrations around the world. She has served as a juror in a number of art exhibitions including some major watercolor shows around the world such as the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, the International Watercolour Masters, the Northwest Watercolor Society, the Utah Watercolor Society and the New Mexico Watercolor Society. In 2015 she was named an official Ambassador for Winsor & Newton. In 2018, she was appointed to the advisory board of the American Watercolor Weekly. In 2018 and 2019, she was invited to be a faculty member for the Plein Air Convention & Expo, the world’s largest plein-air painting event. Keiko currently lives in San Diego, California.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Hello Fellow Artists!
As I begin writing this letter, Easter is on the horizon, a season of hope and rebirth. Despite the snowy weather we’ve been experiencing, flowers will soon be blooming, trees will be budding, baby birds will be peeping, and baby bunnies will be hidden in little nests in our yards. My wish is to make this a time of revitalization and passion and to put these dreary months behind us.
Speaking of flowers, Louise Jackson is our demo artist for April, and she is a remarkable floral painter. I took one of her workshops and it was very informative and fun so please join us at our FAA meeting on Tuesday, April 4, at 7:00 pm.
As most of you know, we had to cancel our show at the Spark venue for April, which was very disappointing, but hopefully something will work out in the future with Blue Bike Bakery. Thanks again to everyone who was willing to participate and to those who were a huge help in the planning of this event.
We do have a Members’ Fine Art Show in May, so be sure that your FAA membership is up to date. This is always an exciting event with so many beautiful pieces! The drop-off date is April 27 from noon to five, and members are allowed to enter two pieces at $10 each, based upon the prospectus requirements.
That’s all I have for now, so don’t forget the June Social, the B-W Greenway show in July, and of course, WE NEED A SWEET CORN FESTIVAL CHAIRPERSON!! (too subtle?)
Keep creating!

March 2023 Newsletter
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Greetings Fellow Artists!
It is the day after Valentine’s Day as I write this and it feels like Spring… the weather in Ohio never fails to amaze me! I suppose we might have a snowstorm next week, since one never knows in this part of the country.
It was a treat to see those who were able to attend our February meeting as our December meeting seems so long ago. Dr, Hyacinth Paul was very entertaining and informative, and I hope she may become a member of the FAA. She would be a creative and energetic addition to our group. I’m looking forward to our March meeting when Trish McKinney is our demo artist. I have heard many complimentary remarks made about her work and have seen some beautiful examples, so it should be another learning experience. I would like to give a special shout out to Carol Edsall for all the time and effort she puts forth in obtaining an artist for us every month. I know it’s not always easy, especially when the artist has to cancel and she has to find a replacement without much notice. Many of these artists are very busy and their time is scheduled months out so it can be quite a scramble sometimes. Carol does an excellent job providing interesting people in various areas of art, and so, THANK YOU, Carol, for doing such a good job!
As I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, I was challenging myself this year to get out of my comfort zone and I have now entered challenge number two. Between my husband Jay, my sister-in-law and myself, we hung my solo show in the Lofino Gallery at the Beavercreek Senior Center, which is quite amazing, since none of us have ever done that before! I was nervous about the reception but it went off without a hitch, and I can’t thank all of you fellow FAA members enough for taking time to attend. It meant the world to me and I was happy my family was able to meet so many of you. So it is now hanging in all of its glory (LOL) and I am happy that it all came to fruition. I don’t know what the rest of the year holds in store but I thank God and all of you for your love and support.
We voted to keep our dues the same at our board meeting, which is an anomaly in this day and age (Huzzah!). Of course, this gets me started on my soapbox… wait for it… we need someone or “someones” to take charge of the Sweet Corn Festival. The reason we have very low dues and wonderful demo artists is because we have the monies to support ourselves due to this festival. If anyone is interested, please contact Warren Brown or myself.
We have an exciting workshop this spring with Keiko Tanabe, a world renowned artist, so be sure and send in your $40 to reserve your spot! Our Members’ Show is also fast approaching so I hope you are all out there creating your superb works of art.
With that, I will bring this month’s epistle to an end. Take care and see you in March!

MARCH’S FEATURED ARTIST – TRISH MCKINNEY
ARTIST STATEMENT
Being aware of wonder – that moment when you pause for beauty, for sparkling, incandescent light – and the magical awareness of emotion which wells up inside – these are the things I savor and adore. I love weaving a story through the use of color, words, shapes, lines, and texture – inspiring the viewer to tell their own story.
Trish McKinney is a national and international award-winning artist, instructor, graphic designer, and published author and illustrator. Her unique mixed watermedia paintings are about being aware of a moment then sharing her wonder by telling the story. The passion that drives it all for this artist is to inspire – both through paintings, writing, and teaching. Trish especially loves the unpredictable surprise and spontaneous nature of watercolor and combining layers of meaning in her painting through words and unexpected shapes. She loves to ask “what if” when working in her studio because that always leads her to a new discovery.
BIO/RESUME
Trish McKinney is a Signature member of the Ohio Watercolor Society and has juried multiple exhibits. Her paintings have been juried into several international and national exhibitions – National Watercolor Society, Pikes Peak International Watermedia Exhibition, Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Exhibition, Kentucky Watercolor Society, International Society of Experimental Artists, and Ohio Watercolor Society – to name a few. She has consistently won numerous awards in several national exhibitions since 2011.
Trish is a published author, illustrator, and artist and has been featured in Confident Color by Nita Leland, Splash 12 – Celebrating Artistic Vision, The Artistic Touch 4, Do Trees Nap? Children’s Book, and Art Journaling Magazine.
She is also a StencilGirl Artist Designer, a GOLDEN Artist Educator, and a member of the Gel Press Creative Team.
Trish finds joy teaching and sharing her experience through giving programs, demonstrations, workshops and retreats for all ages both locally and abroad. She has been teaching and traveling since 1991 in Italy, Greece, Croatia, Ephesus, France, and throughout the United States.
October 2023, Trish will be jurying a National Exhibition for the Watercolor Society of Oregon, as well as teaching a 5 day workshop.
One of her favorite quotes is – “Instructions for living a life. Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.” By Mary Oliver – because this perfectly conveys all that is required to be an artist.

SIGN UP SOON FOR THE MAY 2023 WORKSHOP WITH KEIKO TANABE!
This artist is very well-known and, due to her popularity, artists from outside our area are already registering for this watercolor workshop. Seating is limited. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to learn from this artist and teacher.
The registration form for the May 2023 Workshop is available in the Gallery and on our website under Announcements/Forms.

February 2023 Newsletter
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Happy New Year!
I hope you all had a happy, healthy holiday, despite all the sickness that surrounds us. Even with the debilitating weather, we had a wonderful time with our family, with great food and fellowship. As for 2023, I have decided to challenge myself to step outside my comfort zone and attempt to expand my horizons in the art world. On Saturday, January 7, I gave an art demonstration at the Beavercreek Library, where I painted one of my snowman slates. I was somewhat nervous but it turned out to be a fun, rewarding experience. I enjoyed interacting with the adults and kids who attended and hope to maybe do it again later this year. The second challenge will be in February when I display my artwork at the Lofino Gallery in Beavercreek. Once again, I am nervous but I am powering through, as they say. The reception will be held on Thursday, February 2, from 5:00–7:00 pm, if anyone would like to attend. None of this would have happened if it weren’t for all the encouragement and support I’ve received from all my friends in FAA… I can’t thank you enough!!!
I’m looking forward to our next FAA meeting, Tuesday, February 7, at 7:00 pm, where Dr. Hyacinth Paul will be our guest speaker. I looked online at her work and found her acrylics lively and colorful so it should be a very interesting evening.
Our spring and summer seasons will be here before we know it, with lots of activities including our senior scholarships, Members show, May workshop with Keiko Tanabe, BW Greenway show, June social, Sweet Corn Festival, and more, so be sure to keep abreast of everything through our newsletter, which is superbly put together by our corresponding secretary, April Coppess… kudos, April!
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but we need someone to take over the reins of the Sweet Corn Festival. All kidding aside, our dear Warren Brown has turned an impressive 80 years young and is willing to train someone to coordinate this important cog of our organization. Please contact me or anyone on the board if you are interested. There will be other job openings that will be announced at a later date.
Below are a few photos from the demo at the library, and with that I will sign off. Until we meet in February, keep creating!

Greetings Fellow Artists!
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends! My family has our big celebration on the Wednesday evening before Thanksgiving at our daughter Kelsey’s home, where she prepares the best dinner ever!!! I made some pies and apple crisp which were pretty good, if I do say so myself! On Thursday, we take all the family to Cracker Barrel for breakfast and then they travel to their respective in-laws to celebrate some more. I love this holiday and am thankful for my many blessings, and, I’m thankful for all of you and to be involved in such a wonderful organization. I have so enjoyed getting to know so many of you and look forward to meeting even more!
One way to get to know each other better is to come to our Christmas party on Saturday, December 10, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at our gallery. Food will be provided so please get your reservations to Debbie Cosenza by December 3, and, if you want to participate in our gift exchange, please bring a gift between $10 and $15. We are having the party on Saturday this year as an experiment for those who don’t like to drive after dark. I know some of you won’t be able to attend and you will be missed!
We won’t have a meeting in January, so you can all stay in and stay snuggly and warm but be sure and set aside the first Tuesday in February for another fun-filled, interesting meeting and demo!
Don’t forget that we are still looking for a new Commander-in-Chief for the Sweet Corn Festival. Our fearless leader just turned 80 in October and wants to turn over the helm to someone new so please consider taking on this vital position.
Well, as my dad would say, “That’s it, Fort Pitt!” Enjoy this special time of year and keep creating!

SAD NEWS OF A LONGTIME FAA MEMBER
We have just learned that longtime FAA member Mary Hart died on January 7, 2022. She had been in the care of her niece in Greenville, OH since the pandemic began. Mary was 94 years at the time of her death. Many members will remember Mary and her husband Charlie, who were both active in the organization. Mary was an oil painter and painted regularly with the Friday painters, and Charlie was a woodworker and active volunteer (building our original outdoor furniture and flower boxes). Many members will fondly remember celebrating Charlie’s 90th birthday at a meeting a few years ago.

Autumn Greetings!
I’ve been enjoying watching the leaves turn from green to all the beautiful colors of Fall. The yellows, oranges, reds, and burgundies can take one’s breath away, especially when the sun is shining. They just seem to glow! Hopefully everyone is taking advantage and creating “masterpieces” with your own personal creativity. Speaking of personal creativity, I have been busy painting slates for various crafts shows and have two more to go. I have been painting slates for about 35 years, with slates I originally accumulated from my mother’s old farmhouse near Athens, Ohio. The slate I’m painting on now is from a chicken coop in South Vienna. I paint anything from snowmen, cardinals, chickadees, barns, flowers and lighthouses to peace signs, pets and football helmets. I enjoy putting on my music, sitting at my work desk in my front sunroom, shutting out the world, and entering my own world of art. I hope each of you have an outlet to express your gift of creativity.
Another reminder – Our Christmas party will be on Saturday, December 10, from 3:00–5:00 pm with catered food. Anyone planning to attend should contact our membership chair, Debbie Cosenza, by December 3 so we know how much food to buy. If you want to join in our gift exchange, please bring a $10–15 gift.
Don’t forget that we still need a new chairperson for the Sweet Corn Festival. Warren Brown, our faithful leader, just turned 80 in October and would like to retire from this important position. He is still willing to mentor anyone who is interested in volunteering. We all know this is our BIG moneymaker that keeps FAA running smoothly so please consider stepping up and helping.
Pat Dunker is giving up the position of Workshop Coordinator and Shirlee Bauer is taking over that position. I think we would all like to acknowledge what a wonderful job Pat did in providing and caring for our workshop artists over the years. It’s quite an undertaking which Pat did with enthusiastic competence and we owe her our grateful thanks for a job well-done! I have every confidence that Shirlee will do a great job and continue to provide FAA with talented artists from all over the country. Thank you, Pat and Shirlee!!!
I’d like to thank Jim and Connie Gifford, Roger and Jan Browning, and Billie Dickson for helping to clean out the office and back rooms of our gallery. It was a MAJOR undertaking and we managed to fill an empty dumpster and then filled Billie’s car with items to take to Goodwill. You can actually walk into the library without tripping over tables, chairs, crates, etc., and the back storage room has been cleared of old, unusable pieces. The office has been organized with extraneous articles removed. We worked for 3 1/2 hours and I can’t thank all these hard workers enough!! And once again, thanks to Lucy Burns and Carol Collett who made our library usable again!
Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 1, at 7:00 pm where Erica Keener, who works in pastels, will be our guest demo artist. I thoroughly enjoyed Nancy Neville last month and look forward to what Erica has to share.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting!

NOVEMBER’S FEATURED ARTIST –ERICA KEENER
Artist Erica Keener will demo her pastel art work at our November 1 meeting. With her bold use of color and her eye for natural detail, Erica’s work captures the world around us, asking viewers to reconsider even the most apparently ordinary scenes in what she refers to as “luminous brightscapes”. In particular she enjoys trying to recreate clouds and storms as they move over the landscape. Erica’s goal is to share that simple, meditative joy one can find in simply contemplating the ever changing skies above, and she would like to encourage everyone to look around more often – and especially to look up. Her work can be seen online at ericakeenerart.com, in her studio at the Front Street art complex and in private and corporate collections throughout the Miami Valley and beyond.

MAY 2023 WORKSHOP WITH KEIKO TANABE
Coming in May 2023 is a wonderful watercolor workshop with well-known artist Keiko Tanabe as the instructor.
The registration form for the May 2023 Workshop is available in the Gallery and is attached here.
